The Remote Sensing Group of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has acquired SAR data of the Central Cebu Island for its research study area. The MGB is one of the proponent of DOST-NASA PACRIM II Project, which is composed of eleven (11) agencies and institutions in the Philippines, that focuses on the scientific application of radar data with the theme on hazard and natural resources management. The PACRIM II Project, being done on three-year term, is slated for completion in the year 2004. The main thrust of the project study of the MGB is the baseline environmental monitoring studies, on which the data are to be fused with some other available data from LandSAT and photogrammetry. The generated data is part of the information for the update of thematic mapping being done. The 12 ${\times}$ 60 km swath AirSAR data covers the Central Cebu Island. The highlights of conducting this research project are: Extent of Watershed Basin boundaries - identification of the tributaries that drain water supply to the metropolitan area; Monitoring of the mountain highways - identification of landslide risk prone sites as part of natural hazard monitoring on a national highway that cuts along the mountainous areas; and Coastline change assessment - monitoring the coastline activities relative to the rapid urbanization and exposure as part of coastal management. The Phase 1 of this report discusses the fusion with the ArcView generated data as baseline studies on the monitoring activities.

In this study, the effects of high-resolution land cover on the simulation of near-surface meteorological fields were evaluated in two different coastal regions using Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. These analyses were performed using the middle classification land cover data upgraded by the Korean Ministry of Environment (KME). For the purpose of this study, two coastal areas were selected as follows: (1) the southwestern coastal (SWC) region characterized by complex shoreline and (2) the eastern coastal (EC) region described a high mountain and a simple coastline. The result showed that the application of high-resolution land cover were found to be notably distinguished between the SWC and EC regions. The land cover improvement has contributed to generate the realistic complex coastline and the distribution of small islands in the SWC region and the expansion of urban and built-up land along the sea front in the EC region, respectively. The model study indicated that the improvement of land cover caused a temperature change on wide areas of inland and nearby sea for the SWC region, and narrow areas along the coastal line for the EC region. These temperature variations in the two regions resulted in a decrease and an increase in land-breeze and sea-breeze intensity, respectively (especially the SWC region). Interestingly, the improvement of land cover can contribute large enough to change wind distributions over the sea in coastal areas.
The coastal area, which is managed by local governments, geographically, culturally and economically has been transformed into more influential space. In recent years, new type of fusion researches about coastal areas that have economic, cultural and engineering aspects, have been conducted. In this study, the multiple observations information was used to analyze change of Ilsan beach shoreline which is located in Dong-gu, Ulsan, Korea. For the shoreline analysis, we used VRS-RTK(Virtual Reference System by Real-Time Kinematic) GPS survey, aerial photograph, terrestrial LiDAR survey and fixed reference station survey. Specially fixed reference station method was suggested for shoreline observation and maintenance. In the case of Ilsan beach shoreline, according to the result of multiple observations information, coastline erosion(6~12m) appeared in medium and lower part and sedimentation(3~14m) in the upper part of coastline.
The coastline of semi-enclosed Hampyung Bay, southwestern coast of Korea, consists largely of erosional sea-cliffs characterized by steep face slope, low in height (less than 3m), and composition of soft reddish soil. Recession rates of the sea-cliffs in the Haeuri coast of Hampyung Bay, which were Quantified by photogrammetry using single aerial photographs taken 1976 and 1990, respectively, were approximately 1${\sim}2m/yr. This value is in good agreement with the field measurement conducted by Chang et al. (1999). Subsequently, the photogrammetry seems to be a very useful method to measure easily long-term coastline change. This severe erosion of sea-cliff in the semi-enclosed bay environment, furthemore, is probably due to combined effects of typhoon or/and storm surges and weak resistance of soil cliff itself.
This research is to observe the shoreline changes in Jinha beach over the 50 years with aerial photographs and satellite images. The shoreline image feature was retrieved from the corrected images using wet and dry techniques and analyzed by DSAS from the statistical point of view. From 1967 to 1992, the mouth of Hoeya River was severely blocked and the northern shoreline off Jinha beach was eroded. The blockade of river mouth seemed to have been eased along with the completion of the dike, but soil continued to be deposited along the high sea away from the river month. Compared to the past, a layer of sediment has been formed off the northern coastline while the southern coastline has eroded. At least in the region subject to this research, the construction of a training dike is to blame. On top of that, a mere combination of dredges and artificial nourishment is not enough to take under control the changing shorelines properly. Thus, it is necessary to devise a more fundamental solution by taking into account reasons behind sediment from the river area that could change the shorelines besides the costal environment.
Long-term coastal topographical data is critical for analyzing temporal and spatial changes in shorelines. Especially understanding the change trends is essential for future coastal management. For this research, in the data preparation, we obtained digital aerial images, terrestrial laser scanning data and UAV images in the year of 2009. 2018 and 2019 respectively. Also tidal observation data obtained by the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency were used for Bangamoeri beach located in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do. In the process of it, we applied the photogrammetric technique to extract the coastline of 4.40 m from the stereo images of 2009 by stereoscopic viewing. In 2018, digital elevation model was generated by using the raw data obtained from the laser scanner and the corresponding shoreline was semi-automatically extracted. In 2019, a digital elevation model was generated from the drone images to extract the coastline. Finally the change rate of shorelines was calculated using Digital Shoreline Analysis System. Also qualitative analysis was presented.
The estuary has a very complex coastline and bottom topography. Before the close of floodgate, the Keum river estuary was deposited with sediment from the Keum river, created bythe construction of the Keum river estuary dike. So, a periodical dredging is necessary to assure water depth for boat entry and departure to Kunsan port. Theof this study is to find the change of tidal current of M2tide and the topography before and after construction at the Geum River estuary dike. The change of water depth is investigated by digitizing the sea map (No.305) of Kunsan port, which was edited by National Oceanographic Research Institute. The calculated co-range and co-tidal charts of M2tide before the dike construction are similar to the observed ones. Therefore, the amplitude and phase after construction at Geum River estuary dike increases compared to before construction at Geum River estuary dike. The scour occurred in the A-A' section.
Climate change is affecting the evolutionary trajectories of individual species and ecological communities, partly through the creation of new species groups. As population shift geographically and temporally as a result of climate change, reproductive interactions between previously isolated species are inevitable and it could potentially lead to invasion, speciation, or even extinction. Four species of abalone, genus Haliotis are present along the Korean coastline and these species are important for commercial and fisheries resources management. In this study, genetic markers for fisheries resources management were discovered based on genomic information, as part of the management of endemic species in response to climate change. Two thousand one hundred and sixty one single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were discovered using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) method. Forty-one SNPs were selected based on their features for species classification. Machine learning analysis using these SNPs makes it possible to differentiate four Haliotis species and hybrids. In conclusion, the proposed machine learning method has potentials for species classification of the genus Haliotis. Our results will provide valuable data for biodiversity conservation and management of abalone population in Korea.

To investigate the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area of Chonnam and to collect evidence of the past extreme events causing coastal flooding, three sites were surveyed among the sediments of Baeksoo-eup Hassari. In this study, the changes of particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments were investigated. The sediments near Baeksoonam Elementary School at the elevation of 10m near the paleo-coastline are estimated to have been deposited at about 3,400 years ago and the grain size of the upper part of the sandy layer is in the range of $2.47-2.11{\varphi}$. The burial age of the sediment layer at Sadeung junction(BSN-B) was about 100 years. Considering the distance from the current coastline, the sands forming the dune are estimated to have been moved or deposited from the nearby area or the other dune on the front side. The mean grain size is observed to be fining upward. Especially, the mean of the upper part is about $2.3{\varphi}$, which is similar to other survey points. The averaged grain size of the lower part of the BSNC (Hasari-1 Gu) was $2.196{\varphi}$ and the upper part was $2.16{\varphi}$. The sorting showed that the upper part was slightly poorer than the lower, and it was difficult to specify the change of the environment. The burial age of the lower layer, which contains shells, was about 300 years. Considering previous studies, this shell layer is presumed to have formed by coastal flooding, such as a storm surge.

In the Yeongdong region of Gangwon-do, coastal areas are important resources in terms of cultural, social and economic aspects. However, the coast of Gangwon-do is experiencing severe erosion, and it is concerned that its adverse effects will gradually increase. In this study, coastline changes of Yangyang and Gangneung in Gangwon-do were tracked and analyzed over a long period of time. In order to build time series image data, aerial photos from the 1940s to the present were mainly used, and data from CORONA satellite, which operated from the 1960s to the early 1970s, were collected and used together. Using 51cm resolution ortho image and 2m resolution Digital Elevation Model(DEM) as reference, ground control points were selected to perform geometric correction on the aerial photos and CORONA images. Subsequently, Canny edge detector applied to these images to extract the coastlines. As a result of analyzing the extracted and vectorized coastlines by overlaying them in chronological order, erosion and deposition occurring around the artificial structures and on the nearby beaches were observed. In this study, the effect of seasonal variation, tide, and various coastal management including the beach filling were not considered. Because coastal erosion is greatly affected by geographic factors, each local government must find its own solution. Continuous research and local data accumulation are required.
