This paper examines the recent changes of summer precipitation in the aspect of temporal and spatial features using long-term($1958{\sim}2007$) observed station data over South Korea. tong-term mean summer precipitation has revealed two precipitation peaks during summer(June to September); one is the Changma as the first peak, and the other is the post-Changma as the second peak. During the Changma period, the spatial distribution of the maximum precipitation areas is determined by the prevailing southwesterlies and the quasi-stationary front, which results in large amount of precipitation at the windward side of mountain regions over South Korea. However during the post-Changma period, the spatial distribution of the maximum precipitation areas is determined by the lower tropospheric circulation flows from the west and the southeast around the Korean peninsula, and the weather phenomena such as Typhoons, convective instability, and cyclones which are originated from the Yangtze river. The larger amount of precipitation is founded on the southern coastal region and mountain and coastal areas in Korea during the second peak. Time series of total summer precipitation shows a steady increase and the increasing trend is more obvious during the recent 10 years. Decadal variation in summer precipitation indicates a large increase of precipitation, especially in the recent 10 years both in the Changma and the post-Changma period. However, the magnitude of change and the period of the maximum peak presents remarkable contrasts among stations. The most distinct decadal change occurs at Seoul, Busan, and Gangnueng. The precipitation amount is increasing significantly during the post-Changma period at Gangnueng, while the precipitation increases in the period between two maximum precipitation peaks during summer at Seoul and Busan.

In this study, a computed tide of a real tide was introduced to improve the numerical solutions for tides and tidal flow simulations. The real tide was defined considering the nodal modulation amplitude, phase correction factor, astronomical argument, and tidal harmonic constants of all the constituents. The numerical simulation was performed using the real tide parameters for the west-south coastal waters of Korea, where the observation data for tides, tidal currents, waves, and winds over two seasons exist. The tidal flow simulation of the real tide was simulated successfully. The correlation coefficient between the observed and calculated values was 1.0, which indicated both accurate amplitude and phase. The U- and V-components of the tidal current obtained for the real tide had average valid correlations of 0.83 and 0.936, respectively. The speed error for the residual current was 0.006 m/s on the average, which indicated an insignificant difference, and the directional behavior of the residual current was very similar. In addition, the velocity error was attributed to various weather effects, such as high waves and wind storms. Therefore, this model is expected to improve current solutions provided that weathering forces, such as waves and winds, are considered.
In this study, a statistical estimation of probable precipitation and an analysis of its return period in Busan were performed using long-term precipitation data (1973-2007) collected from the Busan Regional Meteorological Administration. These analyses were based on the method of probability weighted moments for parameter estimation, the goodness-of-fit test of chi-square ($x^2$) and the probability plot correlation coefficient (PPCC), and the generalized logistics (GLO) for optimum probability distribution. Moreover, the spatial distributions with the determination of probable precipitation were also investigated using precipitation data observed at 15 Automatic Weather Stations (AWS) in the target area. The return periods for the probable precipitation of 245.2 and 280.6 mm/6 hr with GLO distributions in Busan were estimated to be about 100 and 200 years, respectively. In addition, the high probable precipitation for 1-, 3-, 6-, and 12-hour durations was mostly distributed around Dongrae-gu site, all coastal sites in Busan, Busanjin and Yangsan sites, and the southeastern coastal and Ungsang sites, respectively.

The eye measurement to observe the sea surface condition and estimate the wave height has been used in the open sea or the ship. The experts in the eye estimation can measure the wave height very accurately. The Beaufort wind scale is most widely used as a standard index of the eye measurement. However, more definite reference data such as the representative images by each wave heights must be necessary because the appearances and explanations in the Beaufort wind scale are not enough to understand the sea surface condition far the researcher and the public. The modern field data acquisition technique has been developed to measure wave heights, ocean weather data and even images of the sea surface in real-time. In this study, the wireless field image transmitting system for wave heights and images is installed in the real-time ocean measurement system of Chodo light tower near Sokcho city in South Korea. The wave heights and surface images acquired from the real time system in the field are compared with explanations of the Beaufort wind scale. The wave heights and images measured with the precision ultrasonic wave sensor and the scientific sea surface image transmitting system should be helpful to obtain more precise and definite information than the data from the Beaufort wind scale.

This study was conducted to estimate annual reference evapotranspiration (ET0) for the agro-climatic zones for rice paddy fields in South Korea between 1980 and 2015. The daily ET0 was estimated by applying the Penman-Monteith method to meteorological data from 61 weather stations provided by Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA). The average of annual ET0 from 1980 to 2015 was 1334.1±33.89 mm. The ET0 was the highest at the Southern Coastal Zone due to their higher air temperature and lower relative humidity. The ET0 had significantly increased with 2.81 mm/yr for the whole zones over 36 years. However, the change rate of it was different among agro-climatic zones. The annual ET0 highly increased in central zones and eastern coastal zones. In terms of correlation coefficient, the temporal change of the annual ET0 was closely related to variations of four meteorological factors (i.e., mean, minimum temperatures, sunshine duration, and relative humidity). The results demonstrated that whole Korean agro-climatic zones have been undergoing a significant change in the annual ET0 for the last 36 years. Understanding the spatial pattern and the long-term variation of the annual ET0 associated with global warming would be useful to improve crop and water resource managements at each agro-climatic zone of South Korea.

Real-time oceanographic information system was developed using platforms of aquaculture farms to examine causes of mass mortality of hatchery fishes, and to reduce the damage of mass mortality which has been occurred frequently off coast by abnormal change of ocean conditions. The system had the advantages of direct data distribution to fishermen at the farm and instant maintenance of equipments due to easy access to the farms and residents at the farms in comparison with offshore mooring buoy system. To avoid discontinued measurement of the system, repairs caused by malfunction of equipments, bimonthly preventive maintenances and daily monitoring of measured data were systematized. Confidence intervals calculated by a statistical method using accumulated data were applied to data management. Such activities could minimize discontinuance of measurement and keep information more trustful. In addition, the system has various ways of data distribution. Through homepage and e-mail in the internet, information was provided to public. Display units which were connected to equipments at the farm gave the measured data directly to fishermen, which guided them to run their farm scientifically. Finally large display unit was installed at a fish market and showed the measured data at the nearest station with tide and weather information. Proper region for aquaculture and wintering region were studied using temperature data obtained by the system in 2006. The system will contribute to reduce economic damage of coastal fishery and to understand coastal marine environment.

Natural shoreline repeats its re-treatment and advance in response to the endlessly varying sea-conditions, and once severely eroded under stormy weather conditions, natural beaches are gradually recovered via a boundary layer streaming when swells are prevailing after storms cease. Our understanding of the boundary layer streaming over surf-zone often falls short despite its great engineering value, and here it should be noted that the most sediments available along the shore are supplied over the surf-zone. In this rationale, numerical simulation was implemented to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of boundary layer streaming over the surf zone in this study. In doing so, comprehensive numerical models made of Spatially filtered Navier-Stokes Eq., LES (Large Eddy Simulation), Dynamic Smagorinsky turbulence closure were used, and the effects of turbulence closure such as Dynamic Smagorinsky in LES and k-ε on the numerically simulated flow field were also investigated. Numerical results show that due to the intrinsic limits of k-ε turbulence model, numerically simulated flow velocity near the bottom based on k-ε model and wall function are over-predicted than the one using Dynamic Smagorinsky in LES. It is also shown that flow velocities near the bottom are faster than the one above the bottom which are relatively free from the presence of the bottom, complying the typical boundary layer streaming by Longuet-Higgins (1957), the spatial scope where boundary layer streaming are occurring is extended well into the surf zone as incoming waves are getting longer. These tendencies are plausible considering that it is the bottom friction that triggers a boundary layer streaming, and longer waves start to feel the bottom much faster than shorter waves.
Rainfall is one of the most important meteorological variables in meteorology, agriculture, hydrology, natural disaster, construction, and architecture. Recently, satellite remote sensing is essential to the accurate detection, estimation, and prediction of rainfall. In this study, the accuracy of Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) product, a composite rainfall information based on Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite was evaluated with ground observation data in the inland of Korea. The Automatic Weather Station (AWS)-based rainfall measurement data were used for validation. The IMERG and AWS rainfall data were collocated and compared during one year from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. The coastal regions and islands were also evaluated irrespective of the well-known uncertainty of satellite-based rainfall data. Consequently, the IMERG data showed a high correlation (0.95) and low error statistics of Bias (15.08 mm/mon) and RMSE (30.32 mm/mon) in comparison to AWS observations. In coastal regions and islands, the IMERG data have a high correlation more than 0.7 as well as inland regions, and the reliability of IMERG data was verified as rainfall data.

Wave measurements using X-band radar have many advantages compared to other wave gauges including wave-rider buoy, P-u-v gauge and Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), etc.. For example, radar system has no risk of loss/damage in bad weather conditions, low maintenance cost, and provides spatial distribution of waves from deep to shallow water. This paper presents new methods for estimating significant wave heights of X-band marine radar images using Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We compared the time series of estimated significant wave heights (Hs) using various estimation methods, such as signal-to-noise ratio (${\sqrt{SNR}}$), both and ${\sqrt{SNR}}$ the peak period (TP), and ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k). The estimated significant wave heights of the X-band images were compared with wave measurement using ADCP(AWC: Acoustic Wave and Current Profiler) at Hujeong Beach, Uljin, Korea. Estimation of Hs using ANN with 3 parameters (${\sqrt{SNR}}$, TP, and Rval > k) yields best result.

In this study, we investigated the quantitative distribution of microplastics in the surface seawater at 8 points near the Taean Peninsula using fluorescence staining. The study revealed a detection range of microplastics from 0 to 360.5 particles/l, with an average of 149.7 ± 46.0 particles/l. When classifying the microplastics by size, it was found that particles smaller than 50 ㎛ were dominant, although there were differences at Site 3. Moreover, it was not possible to identify clear correlations when comparing the number of microplastics based on collection area and particle size. Various physical and chemical factors, including plastic material, dynamic ocean conditions (such as currents, wind, waves, tides), geological characteristics (topography, slope), sediment materials including coastal organisms, human activities (fishing, development, tourism), and weather conditions (floods, rainfall), affect the behavior of microplastics. Therefore, future efforts should focus on standardizing quantitative analysis methods and conducting fundamental research on microplastic monitoring, including the analysis of environmental factors.
