The unicellular green alga Dunaliella salina is a halotolerant eukaryotic organism. Its halophytic properties provide an important advantage for open pond mass cultivation, since D. salina can be grown selectively. D. salina was originally described by E. C. Teodoresco in 1905. Since that time, numerous isolates of D. salina have been identified from hypersaline environments on different continents. The new Dunaliella strain used for this study was isolated from the salt farm area of the west coastal side of South Korea. Cells of the new strain were approximately oval- or pear-shaped (approximately $16-24\;{\mu}m$ long and $10-15\;{\mu}m$ wide), and contained one pyrenoid, cytoplasmatic granules, and no visible eyespot. Although levels of $\beta$-carotene per cell were relatively low in cells grown at salinities between 0.5 to 2.5 M NaCl, cells grown at 4.5 M NaCl contained about a ten-fold increase in cellular levels of $\beta$-carotene, which demonstrated that cells of the new Korean strain of Dunaliella can overaccumulate $\beta$-carotene in response to salt stress. Analysis of the ITS1 and ITS2 regions of the new Korean isolate showed that it is in the same clade as D. salina. Consequently, based on comparative cell morphology, biochemistry, and molecular phylogeny, the new Dunaliella isolate from South Korea was classified as D. salina KCTC10654BP.
For the Effective utilization of the fish resources in coastal regions, investigations on preparation of powdered dried arkshell instant soup., quality stability of the products during storage and utilization as a food material were carried out with arkshell, Anadara broughtonii. Three kinds of powdered instant soup were prespared as 0% table salt(A), 5% table salt (B), 15% table salt(C) and packed with vacuum in laminated film bag. (polyester/nylon: 85${mu}ell$/15${mu}ell$, 18$\times$27cm) Their processing conditions and quality stability during storage at room temperature for 90 days were examined. Powdered instant soup was made by washing raw arkshell to remove visceral, clay, sand and blood, hot air drying(60$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 20 hrs) after draining and pulverizing dried arkshell to 35 mesh. Powdered instant soup was made by adding 2% sugar 0% table salt (5% and 15% table salt), 10.5% monosodium glutamate, 0.3% black pepper and 0.3% garlic powder to the pulverized dried arkshell. The condition of moisture and water activity of the products were 5.9-6.9% and 0.42-0.43, respectively. The moisture content s , water activity and pH of the products were showed little change and volatile basic nitrogen of them increased slightly during storage. Thiobarbituric acid value increased up to 60 days of storage and then decreased slightly. In solubility, powdered instant soup were showed no remarkable difference comparing with goods on the market. The color value of th products were showed little change during storage, In sensory evaluation, product B were scored slightly higher, in most cased, in flaver, color. taste and overall acceptability comparing with product A or product C during storage. Judiging form the sensory evaluation, powdered instant soup of 5% table salt (B) were the most desirable, and the quality of the products was stable for 90 days at 20$\pm$3$^{\circ}C$.

Mokpo city is a coastal city located at the south western coast of the Korean Peninsula. Large regions within Mokpo are subjected to significant subsidence because about $70\%$ of the city area is a reclaimed land from the sea. Although no confidential quantitative measurements are available up to the present, the subsidence rate is as much as several cm per year. In this study, we aimed to estimate the subsidence rate over Mokpo city by using twenty-six JERS-1 SAR dataset from September 1992 to October 1998. Several tens of differential interferograms were processed from JERS-1 dataset and STRM 3-arc DEM. The results indicate continuous subsidence in Dongmyung-dong, Hadang-dong and Wonsan-dong in city, and the subsidence velocity reach over 4 cm/yr in the most highly sinking area. For facilitating the analysis of time-varying surface change, we also carried out an interferometric SAR time series analysis using permanent scatterer and consequently determined space-time maps of surface deformation at each acquisition time of JERS- 1 SAR.
To estimate marine primary production, satellite data are essential for providing much better spatial and temporal resolutions. However, primary production estimation for turbid coastal water such as the Yellow Sea still needs much improvement. Here we evaluate currently available methods of primary production estimation in the Yellow Sea. We focus on comparison of eight combinations from four chlorophyll-a algorithms and two primary production algorithms of the Yellow Sea. Estimated primary production by the eight combinations ranged from 96.5 to $610.2\;gC\;m^{-2}\;yr^{-1}$ in the central region of the Yellow Sea. The new chlorophyll algorithms (presently under development by Korea, China, and Japan scientists) are expected to improve the retrieval of chlorophyll-a in turbid regions compared to the standard algorithm but there are certain unresolved problems. The new algorithm for primary production (which uses adjusted physiological parameters with in-situ data) also needs further improvement.
The aim of this review is to provide perspectives on the application of remote sensing techniques for observation of marine environmental changes on various spatio-temporal scales. Currently available remote sensing technologies are reviewed and future direction is suggested. For better utilization of remote sensing, a comprehensive plan should be developed by a demand-side and problem-solving approach. Marine environmental changes should be observed on proper spatio-temporal scales where the processes occur. For appropriate observation and monitoring of various environmental changes in coastal regions, more sensors must be utilized. Platforms other than satellites should also be utilized to expand the spatio-temporal scales of observation. Calibration/validation activities, required for accurate interpretation of remotely sensed data, could utilize buoys and ship-of-opportunity sensors. It is desirable that such systems by developed as a part of an integrated monitoring network.

Gyeongju in Saro or Silla one of ancient kingdoms in Yeongnam region of southeast Korea, had been developed as a capital city for thousand years despite its unfavorable geographical location being leaned to the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Although this rare case in the world resulted from various facts relevant to political capability and intelligence of the ancient Gyeongju people, the geomorphic characteristics played a key role for its political development. In this paper, we discuss the establishment and growth of ancient kingdoms in Gyeongju area in terms of geomorphological factors such as the Taebaek and Sobaek mountain ranges, distribution of fault lines and alluvial fans along the eastern coast of the peninsula, characteristics of the coastal regions. That is, abundant grain supply from alluvial fans in Gyeongju and surrounding areas, high population-carrying capacity of land and positioning of an ancient supercity were made possible by the geomorphological contributions. Furthermore, Gyeongju could hold the lead in competition with surrounding kingdoms by accumulation of wealth and military superiority derived from production and circulation of salt and iron works. Gyeongju had become the capital of ancient kingdoms due to the geomorphic advantages during the ancient times in Korea.
The Korean marine hydrioid fauna identified up to data consists of 120 species of 55 genera in 17 families. Of which Abientiunaria filicula (Ellis and Solander, 1786) is new to the Korean fauna, and the dominant species of hydroids in Korean water is Sertularella miurensis Stechow, 1921 which is collected from 33 points of 96 localities. The coastal waters of Korea are divided into four regions : the East Sea, the South Sea, the Yellow sea and the Chejudo. Concerning the total number of species occured in each region, 43 species in the East Sea, 52 species in the Yellow Sea, 73 species in the South Sea and 83 species in the Chejudo and its vicinity. From the results above described it can be salid that the Chejudo region shows the most diversity of the Korea hydroids. The community coefficient of the East Sea-the Yellow Sea is 0.444, that of the East Sea-the South Sea 0.553, that of the East Sea-Chejudo 0.519, that of the Yellow Sea-the Sea 0.682, that of the Yellow Sea-the Chejudo 0.533 and that of the South Sea-the Chejudo 0.642. So that the zoogeographical relatinship between the Yellow Sea and the South Sea is the highest and between the East Sea and the Yellow Sea is the lowest on the hydroids distribution.

Pacific herring, Clupea pallasii, a keystone species with significant ecological and commercial importance, is declining globally throughout much of its range. While traditional fishing equipment methods remain limited, new sensitive and rapid detection methods should be developed to monitor fisheries resources. To monitor the presence and quantity of C. pallasii from environmental DNA (eDNA) extracted from seawater samples, a pair of primers and a TaqMan® probe specific to this fish based on mitochondrial cytochrome b (COB) sequences were designed for the real-time PCR (qPCR) assay. The combination of our molecular markers showed high specificity in the qPCR assay, which affirmed the success of presenting a positive signal only in the C. pallasii specimens. The markers also showed a high sensitivity for detecting C. pallasii genomic DNA in the range of 1 pg~100 ng rxn-1 and its DNA plasmid containing COB amplicon in the range of 1~100,000copies rxn-1, which produced linear standard calibration curves (r2=0.99). We performed a qPCR assay for environmental water samples obtained from 29 sampling stations in the southeastern coastal regions of South Korea using molecular markers. The assay successfully detected the C. pallasii eDNA from 14 stations (48.2%), with the highest mean concentration in Jinhae Bay with a value of 76.09±18.39 pg L-1 (246.20±58.58 copies L-1). Our preliminary application of molecular monitoring of C. pallasii will provide essential information for efficient ecological control and management of this valuable fisheries resource.

Coastal and fishing facilities are gradually deteriorating in function due to the continual accumulation of soil sediments, which has affected local economic activities. Currently, there are many methods to remove soil sediments, but these methods are either a temporary solution or require a repetitive removal of the soil sediments, which is a huge financial burden for the maintenance of the facilities. To solve these problems, this study proposed a non-power soil cleaning system and evaluated field applicability by carrying out field model tests. The conditions for the evaluation focused on the drainage-elapsed time and drainage-outflow velocity according to the water level change in the water tank. In the field test, silty clay and sand were separately installed, and sedimentation soil removal test was practiced. As a result, the system was verified to have a sufficient outflow velocity for the removal of soil sediments. In addition, a generalization equation that can be used in different regions of the tide was suggested in this study. These results will greatly contribute to removing soil sediments in ports and dike gate facilities on the southwest coast. Since the system is an eco-friendly technology that does not require additional energy, thus it is expected to contribute to maintenance of sustainable facility performance as well as economic effect in the future.
The Korean government is aiming to produce 20% of the electricity using renewable energy sources by 2030. Ocean renewable energy sources which are abundant in South Korea can do an important role to achieve the goal. This paper introduces a tidal current energy converter utilizing flow induced vibrations which can efficiently work even in the currents slower than 1.0m/s and suggests optimal designs of the tidal energy converter based on speeds of the tidal currents in seven different coastal regions in South Korea. Moreover, the theoretical annual energy production by the tidal converter is estimated at theses costal areas. The total amount of the annual energy production by the tidal energy converter is predicted as 221.77 TWh which is equivalent to 42.3% of the electric consumption of South Korea in 2013. The result shows that the tidal current energy converter can be an important role to achieve the goal of the Korean government.
