  • Wave breaking and breaking wave-induced hydrodynamics are very important subjects in the field of coastal and ocean hydrodynamics and engineering. In the coastal zone, a submerged breakwater has been increasingly popular, since it is one of nature-matching structures with multi- functions such as (1) wave energy dissipation by wave breaking and friction, (2) oxygen supply to sea by wave breaking and breaking wave, (3) water purification by entrained air bubbles, (4) keeping. good seascape. and (5) good habitat for sea livings. Recently, the breaking wave-induced high frequency pressure over a submerged breakwater is said to have a function of gathering sea livings around the structure, which has encouraged the construction of the submerged breakwater in coastal zone.   • In this paper, vibration-based methods to monitor damage in foundation-structure interface of harbor caisson structure are presented. The following approaches are implemented to achieve the objective. Firstly, vibration-based damage monitoring methods utilizing a variety of vibration features are selected for harbor caisson structure. Autoregressive (AR) model for time-series analysis and power spectral density (PSD) for frequency-domain analysis are selected to detect the change in the caisson structure. Also, the changes in modal parameters such as natural frequency and mode shape are examined for damage monitoring in the structure. Secondly, the feasibility of damage monitoring methods is experimentally examined on an un-submerged lab-scaled mono-caisson. Finally, numerical analysis of un-submerged mono-caisson, submerged mono-caisson and un-submerged interlocked multiple-caissons are carried out to examine the effect of boundary-dependent parameters on the damage monitoring of harbor caisson structures.

A study on the fine structure of marine diatoms in Korean coastal waters: Genus Thalassiosira 5

  • Thalassiosira species were collected from October 2007 to January 2009 in an attempt to better understand species diversity of the genus Thalassiosira in Korean coastal waters. A total of 5 Thalassiosira species (T. concaviuscula, T. oceanica, T. partheneia, T. simonsenii and T. nanolineata) were identified here. Most species in this study were of small size, and 5 species were recorded for the first time in Korean coastal waters. Using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), we described distinctive characteristics of fine structure that proved to be important diagnostic characteristics for the identification of each species. The most important diagnostic characteristics for Thalassiosira species identification were the marginal strutted processes, the position of labiate processes, and the areolation. The differential characteristics of the species studied were: T. concaviuscula has a double layered external tubes on the marginal strutted processes; T. oceanica shows marginal ridges that are interlinked between the marginal strutted processes; the valve face of T. partheneia is fairly convex and its labiate process is positioned midway between two strutted processes; T. simonsenii is characterized by two labiate processes and somewhat coarse areolae; and, T. nanolineata has several central strutted processes and linear areolation.

  • In this study, for the establishment of the performance evaluation methods of repair material and method for reinforced concrete structure and the quality control standards of durability recovery method, the quantitative exposure data by exposure experiment under the coastal and normal atmosphere environment is accumulated and analyzed. Investigating and evaluating the result of exposure experiment during 30 months of exposure age under the coastal and normal atmosphere environment, carbonation depth and chlorideion penetration depth very little penetrated than cover depth. It seems reasonable to conclude that main cause of corrosion of reinforcing bar are inner chloride-ion and macro cell from the result of corrosion area and corrosion velocity. Accordingly, it is considered that fundamental data on the performance evaluation and quality control standards of repair material and method could be presented through continuous exposure test in the future.

A Study on the Applicability of the Kinematic and the Static GPS Methods for Coastal Ocean Structure Survey

  • The position fixing usually is determined by triangulation, traverse surveying and astronomy surveying. However, when the station is moving, it is impossible to determine its position continuously by the former method. By a satellite positioning method(GPS), this problem can be solved. In our study, we used two methods to determine the length and coordinate of a point position. One is a kinematic GPS method and the other is a static one. Each is based on carrier phase measurement and employs a relative position technique. We implemented observation experiments such as Geodimeter and DGPS(Differential GPS) successfully. To estimate the accuracy between the kinematic and static methods, we compared the results of Geodimeter, the kinematic, and the static. The results showed that the static is relatively a little more accurate than the kinematic. However, in the kinematic mode, when we received the GPS data for a long time, we found that the kinematic also had a high accuracy value for the length survey Finally, we applied the GPS to Jeju Harbor Breakwater to examine the applicability of GPS for coastal ocean structure based on the kinematics and the statics, respectively.

Spatial Distribution of Wave Overtopping along Vertical Structure due to Obliquely Incident Waves (경사입사파에 의한 직립구조물에서 월파의 공간적 분포)

  • In determination of the crest height of a vertical structure against attacking of obliquely incident waves, most of existing studies have suggested to use the overtopping reduction factor due to incident angles. However, they have not considered the amplification of wave heights and the spatial distribution of wave overtopping. In this study, a spatial distribution of overtopping due to the amplification of wave heights along a vertical structure is investigated experimentally. It is recommended that the crest height can be determined by the same manner as that for normally incident waves up to 3 significant wave lengths from the one end of the structure. However, the rest part of the structure can be done by employing the overtopping reduction factor with considering the amplification of wave heights and the spatial distribution of wave overtopping.

  • Traditionally Jeju island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year and famous as worldwide resort area bemuse of its pure natural environment and dramatic coastal scenery. But unpredicted coastal erosion problem, mused by variation of environmental conditions from construction of coastal structure and renovation of the existing ports, has raised its head above the water, and is becoming serious these days just like other coastal area in Korea. The phenomena happen here along the seaside of southern part of the island show that severe changes in coastal line from erosion and even witnessed the coastal cliff failure. In advanced countries, coastal engineers and researchers have studied deeply about this kind of problem for a long time. However, as it is not sot active in Korea and lack of research data, there exists difficulties on building protection methods and thoughtless constructions might make it more complicated and fatal to the coastal environment. In this study, we investigated some case studies of other countries and intended to induce and propose some integral protection methods for coastline erosion, considering environmentally sound and water friendly way of development such as artificial reef, floating breakwater, and double cellblock breakwater. Finally, we made analysis on the proposed methods with numerical model test and evaluation on the feasibility of each method.

Variation Characteristics of Irregular Wave Fields around 3-Dimensional Low-Crested-Breakwater (3차원 저마루구조물(LCS) 주변에서 불규칙파동장의 변동특성)

  • On the many coasts of South Korea, including the eastern side, it has been recently increasing the coastal disaster such as the severe coastal erosion and road damage swept away by the wave. As one of the alternatives to prevent the coastal disaster, it has been widely studied the coastal disaster reduction method by the Low-Crested Structure (LCS) in the many countries including several European countries. In this study, the olaFLow model is used to simulate the permeable LCS and wave field of the LCS through the three-dimensional irregular waves numerical analysis on the basis of the previous research. From the numerical analysis, it is evaluated the Hrms, nearshore current and time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy. In addition, the pattern of nearshore current and spatial distribution of time-averaged turbulent kinetic energy are compared with the case of submerged breakwater under the irregular wave fields. As one of significant results, it is confirmed that the pattern of nearshore current is different with the case of submerged breakwater.

Analysis of the operation status and opinion on the improvement of fishing vessel structure in coastal improved stow net fishery by the questionnaire survey (설문조사를 통한 연안개량안강망어업의 조업 실태 및 어선 구조 개선에 관한 의견 분석)

  • In order to understand basic data for improving the fishing system and fishing vessel structure in coastal improved stow net fishery, a questionnaire survey and on-site hearing were conducted from May 10 to June 11, 2019 to analyze opinions on the improvement of operation status and fishing vessel structure. The questionnaire survey consisted of ten questions on the operation status of coastal improved stow net fishery and six questions on the improvement of fishing vessel structure, and the results of each question were analyzed by the region, the captain's age, the captain's career and the age of fishing vessel. As a result of analyzing opinions on the operation status of the coastal improved stow net fishery, it was found that the average time required for casting net was 32.8 to 33.0 minutes and that the average time required for hauling net was 41.0 to 42.2 minutes which took 10 to 12 minutes more than for casting net. The most important work requiring improvement during fishing operation (the first priority) were 'hauling net operation,' 'readjustment and storage of fishing gear,' and 'fish handling' and the hardest factor in fishing management were in the order of 'reduction of catch,' 'labor shortage' and 'rising labor costs.' The most institutional improvement that is most needed in coastal improved stow net fishery was an 'using fine mesh nets.' Most of the respondent to the questions on the experience in hiring foreign crews was 'either hiring or willing to hire foreign crews,' and the average number of foreign crews employed was found to be 2.3 to 2.4 persons. The most important reason for hiring (or considering employment) foreign crews was 'high labor costs.' The degree of communication with foreign crews during fishing operation were 'moderate' or 'difficult to direct work.' The most important problem in hiring foreign crews (the first priority) was an 'illegal departure.' As the survey results on the opinion of structural improvement of coastal improved stow net fishing vessel, the degree of satisfaction with fishing vessel structure related to fishing operation was found to be somewhat unsatisfactory, with an average of 3.3 points on a five-point scale. The inconvenient structure of fishing vessel in possession (the first priority), the space needed most for the construction of new fishing vessel (the first priority) and the space considered important for the construction of new fishing vessel (the first prioprity) was a 'fish warehouse.' The most preferred equipment for the construction of new fishing vessel were 'engine operation monitoring' and 'navigation safety devices.' The average size (tonnage class), the average horse power and the average total length of fishing vessel for proper profit and safety fishing operation was between 13.8 and 14.0 tonnes, 808.3 to 819.5 H.P. and 23.4 to 23.5 meters, respectively. The results of the operation status of coastal improved stow net fishery and the requirement for improving the fishing vessel structure are expected to be provided as basic data for reference when we build or improve the fishing vessel.
