A study on ship motion control system design for developing autonomous system: Experimental study (자율운항시스템 개발을 위한 선박운동제어에 관한 연구 : 실험적 연구)

  • In this study, a ship motion control system design method is introduced for autonomous ships. Some related research results and technologies for autonomous ships have already been developed and applied to testing ships. Recently, the Norwegian Maritime Authority and the Coastal Administration have signed an agreement and started to test autonomous ships in the defined area. Considering recent technology trends and background, in this paper, the authors also try to develop autonomous ship control technologies. In the designed control system, an observer is introduced to estimate unmeasurable system states. Based on the servosystem with state estimator, ship motion control experiment is performed to evaluate control performance using a model ship in water basin.

  • The shipboard working environment of coastal patrol ship is very inferior to the ground working environment and it causes the avoidance of shipboard working and the aging of crew. Especially the air pollution and electromagnetic wave in ships causes an occupational disease. Hence of reduce the shipboard working fatigue is necessary by the security of the comfortable shipboard working environment. In this paper, firstly we evaluate the shipboard working environment by using the measurement results of the shipboard air pollution and electromagnetic wave in the sea. And we propose the measures to reduce the shipboard working fatigue which is based on the evaluation results of the shipboard working environment.

  • Long-period wave oscillations in a harbor could create unacceptable vessel movements leading to the downtime of moored ships. It is practically very difficult to prevent long-period harbor oscillations, but extension of breakwaters at the harbor mouth could be a countermeasure in part. Narrowing a harbor mouth might give rise to increase in the energy loss due to flow separation near the mouth, which in turn makes resonant periods of the harbor become longer, especially for the first (or Helmholtz) resonant mode.   • From the point of view of safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment, the Vessel Traffic Management System along the Korea coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But the establishing priority per area must be evaluated under the restricted budget. In this case, the estimated traffic flow has a major effect on priority evaluation. In the former paper , an algorithm was proposed for estimating the trip distribution between each pair of zones such as harbours and straits. This paper aims to formulate a simulation model for estimating the dynamic traffic flow per area in the Korea coastal waterway. The model consists of the algorithm constrined by the statistical movement of ships and the observed data, the regression analysis and the traffic network evaluations. The processed results of traffic flow except fishing vessel are summarized as follows ; 1) In 2000, the traffic congestions per area are estimated, in proportion of ship's number (tonnage), as Busan area 22.3%(44.5%), Yeosu area 19.8%(11.2%), Wando-Jeju area18.1%(6.8%), Mokpo area 14.9%(9.9%), Gunsan area 9.1%(9.3%), Inchon area 8.1%(7.7%), Pohang area 5.5%(8.5%), and Donghae area 2.2%(2.1%). 2) For example in Busan area, the increment of traffic volume per annum is estimated 4, 102 ships (23 million tons) and the traffic flow in 2000 is evaluated 158, 793 ships (687 million tons). 3) consequently, the increment of traffic volume in Busan area is found the largest and followed by Yeosu, Wando-Jeju area. Also, the traffic flow per area in 2000 has the same order.

Analysis of Characteristics of Coastal Passenger Ships on the Voyage Scheduling using Panel Regression Analysis (패널회귀분석을 이용한 연안여객선 취항계획 특성분석에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to analyse a characteristic analysis of coastal passenger vessels' voyage scheduling using the Panel Regression Analysis. The GLS and Fixed Effect Analysis show that the number of canceled flights and passenger transport performance have a positive impact on the voyage scheduling, and that the freight transport performance and freight income vary from model to model. Also, through the LSDV and OLS analysis, the trend of cluster formation by regional office was confirmed. This indicates that there are frequent changes in passenger ship companies and ships, and in-depth plans are needed in various respects rather than the expansion of unconditional ships. Subsequent studies need to generate more detailed and practical results by further analysis of detailed factors, dividing them by route and vessel type.

  • Other damage can occur due to the preexisting dull structure and installation of nonenvironmental-friendly concrete structure, lack of function for preventing coastal erosion. Increase of personal income and fast spread of the concept of waterfront casued the initiation of many project to improve aging coastal ports. However, none of environment-friendly structure has been developed and pre-existing solid block, igloo block, tunnel block are used commonly. In piers and lighter's wharf where the ships are mooring, resonance by the generation of a reflected wave caused by penetration wave in the port and port wave increases wave heights in the port and makes difficult to maintain the temperature, causes problems in mooring ships and cargo-working, and eventually increase the occurance of damages of the small ships by the collision. Therefore, development of new types of blcok is necessary. To apply Coastal Environments block developed for this reason, it requires allowable bearing capacity evaluation of shear key. For this study, we made test specimen for connecting part of C.E. Block, and conducted friction test of boundary surface. Data obtained by the experiment was analyzed by finite element analysis and assessed the coefficient of friction between C.E. Block and boundary surface.

Empirical Analysis for Improvement of Safety Management of Coastal Passenger Ship - Focusing on Safety Practitioners - (연안여객선 안전관리 개선을 위한 실증 분석 - 안전관리 실무 종사자 중심으로 -)

  • This study aimed to extract the priority safety improvement factors for coastal passenger ships and analyze the perception gap between groups. To extract the improvement factors, we formed an expert group with maritime safety supervisors, passenger-ship safety inspectors (PSIs), and captains of passenger ships, and then conducted a Delphi survey. We found, using a hierarchy process, that the improvement factors were divided into three factors in Level 1 and ten factors in Level 2. For the relative importance analysis using the AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) model, we also formed two groups: an inspector group with maritime safety supervisors and PSIs, and an examinee group with safety managers, captains, and crews. Consequently, the factors of designation of public transportation for passenger ships and supporting the welfare of the crew were evaluated as the most important among the extracted factors. We conducted a t-test for the analysis of the perception gap between the two groups. Three perception gaps were found: increasing the inspection personnel, strengthening the qualification of the inspection personnel, and expanding the safety operation center. The result of this study will be useful for improving the safety policy of coastal passenger ships.

  • When the strong wind or long wave energy is transferred into the water body of a harbour, the harbour exhibits oscillatory resonant motions which often cause significant damage to moored ships and navigation hazards. Therefore, a number of theoretical and numerical investigations of such resonant oscillations have been carried out but most of them were limited to harbours connected with open sea of constant depth.   • Modernization of a port requires a considerable port facility expansion through grading up the cargo handling efficiency, increasing water depth of channels and basins to accomodate Large ships, etc. In many ports in the world, the needs of bigger ship calls in excess of conventional capacity of channels and basins demand for capital dredging as well as maintenance dredging resulting from siltation, and those activities are incurring heavy annual expenditure of the ports.   • On the Jeju coast, international cruise ships, passenger ships, and other ships pass frequently, as well as many fishing boats. Thus, there is a high risk of marine accidents and frequent ship collisions. Accordingly, it is urgent to establish a coastal VTS for systematic safety management of ships passing through the coastal waters of Jeju. The purpose of this study was to set the area of the VTS to be newly established. In this study, to calculate the workload of the VTS operators, a formula was proposed that reflects the monitoring workload considering the monitoring frequency and required time for target as well as non-target ships and the workload for ship collision situations. The proposed formula was applied to the newly established VTS area in Jeju. Three control sectors were set up in each VTS center. The average number of workstations per hour was approximately 1, so the division between sectors was appropriate. Thus, it was deduced that there would be no workload for the VTS operators. It is expected that the method proposed in this study can be used as primary data for calculating the appropriate number of workstations for the current VTS, and setting the VTS area for a new coastal VTS in the future.
