  • The wetland ecosystem has a key role in climate change and can capture and store carbon long-term as blue carbon. Currently, the Republic of Korea and People's Republic of China are preparing for the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Phase II inscription, and cross-border cooperation among the two Koreas and the People's Republic of China is expected in term of the coastal wetland in the Yellow Sea region. However, there is a lack of research on the importance of coastal wetland in the Yellow Sea region for migratory bird habitats, roosting sites, feeding grounds, and stop-over sites. Thus, this study focused on the coastal wetland of the Yellow Sea region, including the southwestern coastal wetlands in the Republic of Korea, the Yancheng National Nature Reserve in the People's Republic of China designated as UNESCO World Natural Heritage, and the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which is listed on the Tentative List. The cooperation for ecosystem conservation between the two Koreas and China was analyzed. The importance of coastal wetlands in the Yellow Sea region as habitats for migratory birds, roosting sites, feeding grounds, and stop-over sites, significant characteristics of Yellow Sea coastal wetlands, and conditions for cooperation among three countries, were analyzed. The direction of ecosystem conservation cooperation for coastal wetlands in the Yellow Sea region in this study will be developed into Pan-Yellow Sea conservation.

  • Air quality modeling for coastal urban region has been composed of a complex system including meteorological, chemical and physical processes and emission characteristics in complex terrain. In this study, we studied about an effect prediction for deposition phenomenon affecting on air quality in Pusan metopolitan metropolitan city. In air quality modeling including ship sources, a situation considered deposition process habe better result than not considered when compared with observed value. Air pollutants emitted into urban air during the daytime nearly removed through urban atmosphere polluted. Also these phenomena correlated concentration variation connent with sea/land breezes and terrain effect. Therefore we conclude that the concentration was low at daytime when deposition flux is high, and deposition effect on industrial complex and Dongrae region is considerable in particular.

  • To clarify the characteristics of TKE (Turbulence Kinetic Energy) variation for offshore wind power development, several numerical experiments using WRF were carried out in three different coastal area of the Korean Peninsula. Buoyancy, mechanical and shear production term of the TKE budget are fundamental elements in the production or dissipation of turbulence. Turbulent kinetic energy of the south coast region was higher than in other sea areas due to the higher sea surface temperature and strong wind speed. In south coast region, strong wind passing through the Korea Strait is caused by channelling effect of the terrain of the Geoje Island. Although wind speed is weak in east coast, because of large difference in wind speed between the upper and lower layer, the development of mechanical turbulence tend to be predominant. Since lower sea surface temperature and smaller wind shear were detected in west coastal region, the possibility of turbulence production not so great in comparison with other regions. The understanding of the characteristics of turbulence in three different coastal region can be reduced the uncertainty of offshore wind construction.

  • Authors tried to classify landforms of civilian-restricted trans-border coastal region of the East Sea by using both field survey and remote sensing data including IKONOS images and digital maps. As a result, authors can draw the boundaries of landform units on satellite images and classify landforms effectively. Typical landforms of undisturbed depositional coastal area such as coastal sand dune, sand bar, lagoons, and tombolo are found within the study area. Also, riverine wetlands and estuarine wetlands are readily discernable on both satellite image and field survey. Even though landforms within the study area are relatively small, they are so dynamically connected that their preservation value is very high.

  • The purpose of this study is to find a variation in traveling patterns of soil and soil diffusion due to construction of the sea dike in Saemangum coastal sea region. Water circulations are calculated diagnostically from the observed water temperature, salinity and wind data, and tidal residual current. Three-dimensional movements of injected particles due to currents, turbulence and sinking velocity are tracked by the Euler-Lagrangian method. Calculated a variation in traveling patterns of soil and soil diffusion due to construction of the sea dike deposited mostly from estuarine area of the Geum River to Gokunsan coastal sea region. This results are believed to be the combined effect of coastal circulation.

  • Influences of orographic and ocean effect, which depend on the detailed geographic characteristics, upon winter time (December-February) precipitation in the Yeongdong region are investigated. Most of precipitation events in the Yeongdong region during the wintertime are associated with moist northeasterly (coming from the northeast direction) winds and also the spatial distribution of precipitation shows a great difference between Mountain area (Daegwallyeong) and Coastal area (Gangneung). The linear correlation coefficient between the meteorological variables obtained from NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis Data and precipitation amount for each precipitation type is calculated. Mountain type precipitation is dominated by northeasterly wind speed of the low level (1000 hPa and 925 hPa) and characterized with more precipitation in mountain area than coastal area. However, Coastal type precipitation is affected by temperature difference between ocean and atmosphere, and characterized with more precipitation in coastal area than mountain area. The results are summarized as follows; In the case of mountain type precipitation, the correlation coefficient between wind speed at 1000 hPa (925 hPa) and precipitation amount at Daegwallyeong is 0.60 (0.61). The correlation is statistical significant at 1% level. In the case of coastal type precipitation, the correlation coefficient of temperature difference between ocean and 925 hPa (850 hPa) over the East sea area and precipitation amount at Gangneung is 0.33 (0.34). As for the mountain type precipitation, a detailed analysis was conducted in order to verify the relationship between precipitation amount at Daegwallyeong and low level wind speed data from wind profiler in Gangneung and Buoy in the East Sea. The results also show the similar behavior. This result indicates that mountain type precipitation in the Yeongdong region is closely related with easterly wind speed. Thus, the statistical analysis of the few selected meteorological variables can be a good indicator to estimate the precipitation totals in the Yeongdong region in winter time.

  • The influence of water temperature (WT) on air temperature (AT) in the eastern and western coastal regions of the Korean peninsula in the winter was investigated using historical data from the Korean Meteorological Agency (KMA) and the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS), focusing on the relationship between AT and WT. The data analysis shows that, during winter, the AT is generally higher by +1.9 to $+2.7^{\circ}C$ at Kangreung ($37.2^{\circ}N$) in the eastern region than at Inchon ($37.4^{\circ}N$) in the western region, i.e., the AT in the eastern region of the Korean Peninsula tends to be higher overall than that in the western region when similar latitudes are compared. On the other hand, in the winters of 1977-2006, the WT at Sokcho was higher by $+0.8^{\circ}C$ (January) to $+2.3^{\circ}C$ (March) than that at Sochungdo, directly resulting in increased AT ($+1.22^{\circ}C$) at Sokcho. This study suggests that higher AT in the eastern region during winter is caused by the influence of water flow, such as the East Korean Warm Current in the East/Japan Sea.

  • Based on Latti(1974) and Jacobs&Way(1968)'s theory, we estimate the coastal area of Jeju and Busan cities. According to the estimateio, The seawater pumping line causes the problem of coastal landscape. Water management treatment of coastal region has been an important problem in Jeju city and Busan city since the distributions of pipeline if the pumping system made a bad view in coastal region. To solve the problem, we observed the pipelines that are on the surface around the coastal region we proposed two methods, that is, one is a short time treatment, the other is a long time one. The short is based on the colour treatment, which is pipeline colour changing into surround natural one. The long time is the construction plan design method. Although the later method was very useful in Jeju island. However, it takes a lot of time and money. Therefore, in the situation, the short time is the better than the long time one.

  • This study was carried out to investigate preference and purchase factors of seaweed in some regional residents of Korea. Subjects were residents (n = 1,218) whose residential area was divided into inland and coastal region and the survey was done during December 2007. Especially, purchase factors of seaweeds was conducted only in married females (n = 353). The subjects are composed of 46.5% male and 53.5% female. Regional distribution of subjects was found to be 16~17%, with highest ratio in the age bracket of 20~29 years old. Proportion of students, at 29.8%, was the highest ranking occupation of the subjects. Preference score of seaweeds by region was highest for laver followed by brown seaweed and sea tangle. In terms of preference by gender, female subjects displayed higher preference score for green laver (p < 0.01), seaweed fusiforme, brown seaweed, sea tangle (p < 0.001) than the male subjects. Considerations being made when purchasing seaweeds for each region were in the order of freshness, taste and nutrition. In comparing the inland and coastal region, scores of freshness, convenience, design and color for the coastal region was higher, displaying significant difference.
