Atmospheric particulate matters (A. P. M. ) were collected on quartz-fiber filters from March 1985 to May 1986, using the Andersen high-volume air sampler and contents of six heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Pb Ni) in the A. P. M. were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. These heavy metals were divided into the three groups with respect to their particle size distribution. Fe and Mn were mainly associated with coarse particles (diameter > 2.0 $\mu$m), but Pb and Ni were related fine particles (diameter < 2.0 $\mu$m). Cu and Zn had mized size distributions in both of them. In the seasonal variation of heavy metals, the contents of Fe and Mn in spring and Ni and Pb in winter were higher than any other season. There were high mutual correlation between Fe and Mn coarse particles, and between Pb and Ni in fine particles.
Aerosol mass size distributions were measured at Kosan, Cheju Island in April 1998 and their compositions were analyzed. Microorifice Uniform Deposit Impactor(MOUDI) was used to collect aerosols. Sulfate and ammonium ions were predominatly present at fine mode of the aerosols while nitrate, chloride, and metal ions were mostly at coarse mode. Based on the size distribution of nitrate, it is suggested that most nitrate were from gas to particle conversion on coarse particles. Non-sea salt(nss) fraction of sulfate accounted for more than 90% of total sulfate mass concentration. In general, ion concentrations in this study are lower than those measured at the same site from the previous studies. Ion balance and chloride ion levels indicates that there had been anthropogenic chloride emission sources near to the site during the measurements.
In this study, particle size distribution of cement powder system were adjusted using the blast furnace slag powder, Blaine $2250cm^2/g\;and\;8300cm^2/g$, which easy to adjust particle size distribution to examine how particle size distribution of the binder has an effect on rheological properties of the cement paste. In addition, the relationship between n-value of Rosin-Rammler function and plastic viscosity were discussed. All measured flow curves represented thixotropy behavior and the hysteresis area was smaller for the more added coarse particle. When the combination was based on a ratio of $20{\sim}25vol%$ fine particles, $30{\sim}40vol%$ OPC and $40{\sim}45vol%$ coarse particles of the total volume, a high fluidity and low yield strength was achieved.
Particle size distribution of airborne suspended particulate concentrations according to particle size in the events of yellow sand phenomena, have been measured and analyzed by using Andersen air sampler for four years, January 1982 through December 1985. The conclusions are as follows: 1. Yellow sand phenomena, generally, occur between March and May. 2. The frequent occurrences of yellow sand were observed during March and April and airborne suspended particulate concentrations in the cases of yellow sand appeared to be 2 $\sim$ 3.4 times higher than those of normal conditions. 3. Geometric mean particle diameter and its geometric mean standard deviation by logarithmic normal distribution sheet, were quite close to each other and log-distribution curves showed similar shapes. 4. Analysis by particle size distribution curve showed bi-modal distribution. 5. Concentrations of coarse particles in normal conditions were 1.2 $\sim$ 2 times higher than those of fine particles and, similarly, coarse particle concentrations in yellow sand cases were 1.3 $\sim$ 2.5 times higher than those of fine particles. 6. Concentrations of coarse particles in yellow sand cases were 2 $\sim$ 3.6 times higher than those in normal conditions and those of fine particles were 1.7 $\sim$ 3.5 times higher.
It was very important to evaluate concrete experimentally at elevated temperature because concrete was filled with aggregate of concrete volume about 70 percent. Concrete exposure to high temperatures produces changes in its internal structure, for instance loss of its strength and deformation capacity, in extreme cases risking the service life of the structure. The work of this paper is performed to evaluate the thermal behavior of ultra-high strength concrete having different water to cement ratio (strength), fine aggregate to aggregate ratio and maximum size of coarse aggregate. For exposure to 500℃ during 1 hour, residual mechanical properties of the ultra-high strength concrete decreased as the s/a ratio decreases and the maximum size of coarse aggregate increases.
Particle collection characteristics of the MOUDI cascade impactor has been studied for coarse particles in the range of 2 to 20$mu extrm{m}$ in aerodynamic diameter. A vibrating orifice aerosol generator was empolyed to generate monodisperse test aerosols. The oleic acid and sodium chloride(NaCl) particles were used as test aerosols. Aluminum foil and Teflon filter were selected as impaction media. The sampling flow rate was changed from 25 to 35L/min. Particle collection efficiency for single stage was examined for liquid particles. The stage response was obtained experimentally for the cascade impactor composed of three stages and a backup filter. The results showed that most of particle collection efficiencies measured in this work are similar to the efficiency curves obtained by Marple et al.(1991). For particles less than cut-off size of the stage, the collection efficiencies of solid particles are similar to those of loquid particles. However, the collection efficiency of solid particles decreases with mereasing particle diameter for the particles greater than the actual cut-off size of the impactor. The particle collection efficiency increases with increasing sampling flow rate at the same particel size. However, the collection efficiency curves seem not to be greatly shifted with the flow rate. The stage responses obtained by direct measurements in this work are in good agreement with those derived from the collection efficiency curves for single stage.
Ultra high strength concrete (UHSC) originally proposed by Richards and Cheyrezy (1995) composed of cement, silica fume, quartz sand, quartz powder, steel fibers, superplasticizer etc. Later, other ingredients such as fly ash, GGBS, metakaoline, copper slag, fine aggregate of different sizes have been added to original UHSC. In the present investigation, the combined effect of coarse aggregate (6mm - 10mm) and steel fibers (0.50%, 1.0% and 1.5%) has been studied on UHSC mixes to evaluate mechanical and fracture properties. Compressive strength, split tensile strength and modulus of elasticity were determined for the three UHSC mixes. Size dependent fracture energy was evaluated by using RILEM work of fracture and size independent fracture energy was evaluated by using (i) RILEM work of fracture with tail correction to load - deflection plot (ii) boundary effect method. The constitutive relationship between the residual stress carrying capacity (σ) and the corresponding crack opening (w) has been constructed in an inverse manner based on the concept of a non-linear hinge from the load-crack mouth opening plots of notched three-point bend beams. It was found that (i) the size independent fracture energy obtained by using above two approaches yielded similar value and (ii) tensile stress increases with the increase of % of fibers. These two fracture properties will be very much useful for the analysis of cracked concrete structural components.
Measurements on mass size distribution of roadside aerosols were obtained in downtown Jeju City from July 2018 to May 2020 using an 8-stage cascade impactor sampler and the compositions of aerosols were analyzed. The mass size distribution of total aerosols was bimodal with aerosols existing in both the fine and coarse modes. The mass size distributions of Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, NH4+ and SO42- were unimodal, whereas that of K+ was bimodal. For NO3-, the size distribution in winter and spring was bimodal with the peaks in both fine and coarse modes, whereas for summer and autumn the distribution was unimodal with a peak in the coarse mode. NH4+ was found to co-exist with SO42- in the fine mode with an average molar ratio of [NH4+]/[SO42-] equal to 2.05. Good correlation was observed between NO3- and NH4+ in the fine mode particles in spring and winter. Based on the value of the marine enrichment factor for Cl-, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+ and SO42-, it may be inferred that a major part of the roadside aerosols in downtown Jeju City was largely contributed by terrigenous sources, although the influence of sea salt was normally present.
Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.
This study has analyzed mechanical and dry shrinkage properties according to the recycled coarse aggregate by nominal strength actually being widely used at the Remicon companies for the purpose of qualitative improvement of concrete, practical use and examination at various strengths. As a result, although the modulus of elasticity showed a tendency of getting decreased as the replacement ratio of recycled coarse aggregate has increased, the difference was insignificant while the compressive strength showed a tendency of about 3MPa increase in the recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio of 30% compared to the ratio of 0%. In case of the dry shrinkage length variation ratio, the recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratio of 30% showed a tendency of about 20% shrinkage reduction compared to the ratio of 0%.
