The experimental design methodology was applied in the real scale coal-fired boiler to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was provided with the numerical simulation of the coal-fired boiler. The three independent variables, high heating value of coal (HHV), overall stoichiometry excess air ratio (OST), and burner-side stoichiometry excess air ratio (BST), were set to characterize the cross section averaged NOx concentration and temperature distribution. The maximum NOx concentration was predicted accurately and mainly controlled by BST in the boiler. The parabola function was assumed for the zone averaged peak temperature distribution, and the prediction was in a fairly good agreement with the experiments except downstream. Also, the location of the peak temperature was compared with that of maximum NOx, which implies that thermal NOx formation is the main mechanism in the coal-fired boiler. These results promise the wide use of statistical models for the fast prediction and safety assessment.

To meet the environmental requirements, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. (Doosan) had developed low NOx pulverized coal burner and it was applied to boiler retrofit project, 130 ton/hr coal fired cogeneration boiler, in 2003. NOx emissionand unburned carbon (UBC) in fly ash were measured during the commissioning tests. In this paper, the operation results of low NOx pulverized coal burner installed in 130 ton/hr coal fired boiler are presented. Burners emitted 160 ppm (@6 % $O_2$ basis) NOx and 3 % UBC with Chinacoal containing 0.86 % fuel nitrogen. And also it was shown that NOx emission rate of low NOx pulverized coal burner is linearly increased with fuel-nitrogen fraction of coal.

A numerical investigation has been carried out about the performance of a 500MW class tangentially coal-fired boiler, focusing on the optimization of separated overfire air (SOFA) position to reduce NOx emission. For this purpose, a comprehensive combination of NOx chemistry models has been employed in the numerical simulation of a particle-laden flow along with solid fuel combustion and heat and mass transfer. A reasonable agreement has been shown in baseline cases for predicted operational parameters compared with experimental data measured in the boiler. A further SOFA calculation has been made to obtain optimum elevation and position of SOFA port. Additionally, clarifying on the effect of SOFA on NOx emission has been carried out in the coal-fired boiler. As a result, this paper is valuable to provide an information about the optimum position of SOFA and the mechanism by which the SOFA would affect NOx emission.

This paper is written for the development and application of boiler fuel control algorithm and distributed control system of coal-fired power plant by the steps of design, coding, simulation test, site installation and site commissioning test. Fuel control algorithm has the upper algorithm and it is boiler master control algorithm that controls the fuel, feed water, air by generation output demand. Generation output demand by power load influences fuel control. Because fuel can not be supplied fast to the furnace of boiler, fuel control algorithm was designed adequately to control the steam temperature and to prevent the explosion of boiler. This control algorithms were coded to the control programs of distributed control systems which were developed domestically for the first time. Simulator for coal-fired power plant was used in the test step. After all of distributed control systems were connected to the simulator, the tests of the actual power plant were performed successfully. The reliability was obtained enough to be installed at the actual power plant and all of distributed control systems had been installed at power plant and all signals were connected mutually. Tests for reliability and safety of plant operation were completed successfully and power plant is being operated commercially. It is expected that the project result will contribute to the safe operation of domestic new and retrofit power plants, the self-reliance of coal-fired power plant control technique and overseas business for power plant.

The bolier systems of coal fired power plants are large, non-linear systems with numerous interactions between its component parts. In the analysis of such complex systems, dynamic simulation is recognized as a powerful method of keeping track of the myriad of interactions. The boiler system consists of air/gas system and water/steam system. Due to recent reinforcement of environmental regulation on pollutant discharge and requirements of design validation on properites of boiler, the commercial programs are used for the analysis of boiler system. This paper addressed to the development of model using MMS(Modular Modeling System) developed by EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute) as the simulation tool. The developed model using MMS is tested for the design and local data on boiler combustion system of korea standard coal fired power plant boiler. The simulation results show that the developed model well reproduces responses of the combustion system with less than ${\pm}$5% error under steady state and transient state conditions. The developed model for analysis of the combustion system in this paper is general and applicable to any type of coal fired power plant.

Although fireside corrosion of heat transfer surfaces in coal fired steam generators has been a problem to some extent for a number of tears, with the advent of low NOx firing systems these surfaces can be exposed to conditions that will exacerbate wastage rates. Numerous reports of waterwall wastage in coal fired boilers have appeared in the literature. It is believed that wastage results both from gaseous phase attack of metal surfaces and from deposition of ash and unburned fuel. Gaseous phase attack is known to occur in the presence of reducing sulfur species such as $H_2S$ and in the presence of fuel chlorine. The highest wastage rates are thought to be due to deposition of unoxidized material and the presence of fuel chlorine. Localized wall and near wall conditions that may exacerbate wastage include reducing conditions, high temperatures, high heat fluxes, and a high fraction of unoxidized material deposited. So, this study is directed at developing an advanced corrosion model in coal-fired utility boilers.

This paper is written for the development of boiler combustion air control algorithm of coal-fired power plant by the steps of design, coding and test. The control algorithms were designed in the shape of cascade control for two parts of air master, forced draft fan pitch blade by standard function blocks. This control algorithms were coded to the control programs of distributed control systems under development. The simulator for coal-fired power plant was used in the test step and automatic control, sequence control and emergency stop tests were performed successfully like the tests of the actual power plant. The reliability will be obtained enough to apply to actual site if the total test has been completed in the state that all algorithms were linked mutually. It is expected that the project result will contribute to the safe operation of domestic power plant and the self-reliance of coal-fired power plant control technique.
This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion and emissions in pulverized coal fired boiler for using high moisture coal and dry coal through computational fluid dynamics(CFD). We validated this boiler model with performance data of the boiler. The results of flow characteristics showed that climbing speed of gases was increased as blending ratio of high moisture coal was increased. It can decrease a residence time of fuel in the furnace. And it influence coal combustion. The coal burnout and NOx generation in burner level were decreased as increasing blending ratio of high moisture coal. The gas temperature and NOx formation were increased after OFA level due to coal burnout delay.
In this study, boiler tube thickness measurement and numerical analysis were conducted for standard 500MW coal-fired power plant in order to research the mechanism of tangential-fired boiler corrosion empirically. The most dominant corrosion mechanism of tangential-fired boiler waterwall was corrosion by sulfur contained in the unburned carbon. And the secondary mechanism was $H_2S$ gas corrosion at localized reducing atmosphere. It is required to decrease the air-stage combustion operation in order to mitigate the waterwall tube corrosion. Also stringent coal pulverization quality control and reinforcing work for corrosion susceptible area such as anti-corrosion coatings is required
This paper is investigated on the improvement for steam temperature control at Boryung coal-fired drum boiler type thermal power plant. The steam temperatur control has been mainly operated by the feedback controllers. Automatic controllers are bounded and difficult. Because boiler system is nonlinear and the system time delay is very large. Optimal regulators including predictive feedforward and differentiate control are synthesized and some improved output results are presented.
