A new electrostatic separator has been developed for the removal of unburned carbon from fly ash. In this separator, a flowing film of fly ash is created on the surface of a vibrating electrode. Conducting particles such as unburned carbon acquire electrostatic charges and jump out of the flowing film so that they can be removed from the non-conducting fly ash particles moving forward. The new separator has been tested successfully using a pilot-scale test unit at 0.5 tons/hr capacity. Based on the successful test results, a larger unit is being constructed at the present time.

Coal power plants produce electricity for the nation's power grid, but they also produce more hazardous air emissions than any other industrial pollution sources. The quantity is staggering, over 386,000 tons of 84 separate hazardous air pollutants spew from over 400 plants in 46 states. In South Korea also, annual coal ash generation from coal-fired power plants were about 6 million tons in 2015. Pollutants containing particulate matter 10, 2.5 (PM10, PM2.5), heavy metals and dioxins from coal-fired power plant. The emissions threaten the health of people who live near these power plants, as well as those who live hundreds of miles away. These pollutants that have long-term impacts on the environment because they accumulate in soil, water and animals. The present study is to investigate the physical and chemical characteristics of coal-fired power plant fly ash and bottom ash contains particulate matter, whose particulate sizes are lower than $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ and heavy metals. There are wide commercial technologies were available for monitoring the PM 2.5 and ultra-fine particles, among those carbonation technology is a good tool for stabilizing the alkaline waste materials. We collected the coal ash samples from different coal power plants and the chemical composition of coal fly ash was characterized by XRF. In the present laboratory research approach reveals that potential application of carbonation technology for particulate matter $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and stabilization of heavy metals. The significance of this emerging carbonation technology was improving the chemical and physical properties of fly ash and bottom ash samples can facilitate wide re use in construction applications.
This paper indicates the investigation about the development of ET (Environmental Technology) industrial geopolymeric materials from mixture silica mine waste, coal fly ash and alkali activator solution (sodium silicate) by the geopolymer technique at ambient temperature. The results showed that higher compressive strength of geopolymeric mortar increased with a reduce of L/S ratio and increased along with an increase of coal fly ash content. The compressive strengths of geopolymer mortar on low silica of C Silica Mine and K Silica Mine are 18.7 MPa, 20.4 MPa, respectively. Compressive strength of geopolymeric mortar depends on L/S ratio and coal fly ash content added.. Additionally, scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques are used to characterize the microstructure of the geopolymeric mortars. SEM observation shows that it is possible to have amorphous aluminosilicate gel within mortar. XRD patterns indicate the fact that geopolymeric mortar is composed of amorphous aluminosilicate phase, calcite and quartz.

The aim of the research is to investigate the fundamental properties and heat of hydration reducing performance of the fly ash incorporated concrete mixture when the coal gas slag (CGS) from integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is used as fine aggregate. From the results of the experiment, the workability was generally increased and the air content was decreased up to one to four percent with increasing the replacing ratio of CGS to fine aggregate. The compressive strength was similar or increased within five percent to the Plain mixture when the CGS was used as a fine aggregate. When the CGS and fly ash were used same time, the heat of hydration reducing performance was improved than single using cases either CGS or fly ash. Based on the results, for the concrete mixture using CSG as a portion of the combined fine aggregate, the general properties were improved and heat of hydration was decreased approximately 16 % when the fly ash was replaced 30 % to cement and the CGS was replaced less than 50 % to fine aggregate.
The importance of waste treatments is increasing because of the lack of resources and environmental problems resulted from economic growth policy. Especially, the pollutant dust which is one of the wastes should be treated considerately because it could cause secondary damages on the human health as well as environmental systems. Recently, massive amount of coal fly-ash is being produced in thermoelectric power plants. In this study, we compared two general methods used in estimating the amount of unburned carbon in fly-ashes to categorize the coal fly-ashes into several groups following their carbon contents. One is the "loss on ignition(KS L 5405) method" which estimates the change of mass after combustion, and it is generally used. Another one is measuring $CO_2$ gas content by burning solid carbon in the fly-ash, and it is called "$CO_2$ analysis method."

Coal ash, which is generated as a byproduct at a coal thermal power plant, can be classified into fly ash and bottom ash. Most of fly ash is recycled as an admixture for concrete, while bottom ash is not recycled but dumped into an ash landfill disposal site. So, if a technology for recycling bottom ash efficiently, which is increasingly generated year by year, is not developed, environmental problems will take place as a matter course and further an enormous economical cost will be required for construction of additional ash landfill disposal sites. In this study an optimum mix proportion design and a quality control method for utilizing the reclamation coal ash as an aggregate for secondary concrete products such as an artificial reef was successfully developed.
The purpose of this study was to examine a possibility that fly ash could be used as raw material for carbonation by conducting the experiment on magnetic separation and hydration of fly ash that contained a large amount of CaO composite. Wet magnetic separation experiment was performed to remove the component of magnetic substance that contained fly ash, which aimed at increasing the content of CaO in the non-magnetic domain. The selected fly ash was used for hydration experiment before the TG-DTA, XRF and XRD analyses were made to confirm the Ca component that could be carbonated. Then, the fly ash was turned to a hydrate that was favorable to dissociation of $Ca^{2+}$ ion. As a result, the magnetic separation enabled detecting the content of CaO component by up to 61 wt% in the non-magnetic domain. Since the hydrate was confirmed, it is believed that the fly ash can be used as raw material for carbonation.
In most coal fired power plants, fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in the electrostatic precipitator are transported and stored in a silo. However the properties of the fly ashes collected from each of hoppers in electrostatic precipitator varies with the distance of the collection field from the boiler. The more distance hopper gets fly ash with larger specific surface area. Therefore, in electrostatic precipitator the hopper itself is expected to have the effect of classifying fly ashes. This study examines the physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of fly ash, collected from each of hoppers attached to an electrostatic precipitator in the coal fired power plant and looks into the possibility of the electrostatic precipitator being used as a classifier. Also, the study reviewed the possibility of acquiring high quality fly ash.

In this study, the strength and durability of compacted coal ash with proper mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash, such as 5:5 or 6:4, are examined for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials. Right after compaction, the strength of bituminous mixed coal ash is greater than that of anthracite mixed coal ash. The distinguished increase of strength with curing time is observed only in Ho-nam mixed coal ash that contains a lot of free lime, and the strength increase with curing time are not seen or little in the others. The durability in sinking test is good also in Ho-nam mixed coal ash, but satisfactory by adding 2% cement in the others. And it is seen that the effects of the strength increase with adding cement are greater in coal ash with proper mixing ratio than in fly ash or bottom ash respectly.
Upon the combustion of coal particles in a coal-fired power plant, fly ash (80%) and bottom ash (20%) are unavoidably produced. Most of the ashes are, however, just dumped onto a landfill site. When the landfill site that takes the fly ash and bottom ash is saturated, further operation of the coal-fired power plant might be discontinued unless a new alternative landfill site is prepared. In this study, wet flotation separation system (floating process) was employed in order to recover unburned carbon (UC), ceramic microsphere (CM) and cleaned ash (CA), all of which serving as useful components within fly ash. The average recovered fractions of UC, CM, and CA from fly ash were 92.10, 75.75, and 69.71, respectively, while the recovered fractions of UC were higher than those of CM and CA by 16% and 22%, respectively. The combustible component (CC) within the recovered UC possessed a weight percentage as high as 52.54wt%, whereas the burning heat of UC was estimated to be $4,232kcal\;kg^{-1}$. As more carbon-containing UC is recovered from fly ash, UC is expected to be used successfully as an industrial fuel. Owing to the effects of pH, more efficient chemical separations of CM and CA, rather than UC, were obtained. The average $SiO_2$ contents within the separated CM and CA had a value of 53.55wt% and 78.66wt%, respectively, which is indicative of their plausible future application as industrial materials in many fields.
