Objective : The effects of electroacupuncture(EA) stimulation on heart rate variability(HRV) for healthy adults are investigated with power spectrum analysis(PSA) of HRV. Methods : The HRVs of every 10 minute for 22 healthy volunteers(13 men and 9 women) were measured for an hour with SA-3000P(Medicore Co., Ltd., Korea). The median age with arithmetic range of 13 men and 9 women was 26.00 years with 22.75~27.00 years. The initial 20 minutes were defined as baseline period(pre-EA period), the following 20 minutes as the EA period and the last 20 minutes as the post-EA period. In each EA periods, volunteers received EA(2Hz, 0.6~0.8ms duration, maximal tolerated stimulation without discomfort) on the right Zusanli(ST36), Shangjuxu(ST37) acupoints while supine, resting. Results : Heart rate of volunteers at post-EA period was significantly decreased compare to that of pre-EA period, while SDNN at post-EA period was significantly increased. Heart rate at EA period was significantly decreased compare to that of pre-EA period, but Ln(LF) and LF/HF at EA period were significantly increased. Ln(HF) at post-EA period was significantly decreased compare to that of EA period, while the other variables were not significantly changed. Conclusions : The results suggest that EA in healthy adults is associated with changed activity in the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Further study is needed for investigating the effects of EA on HRV and autonomic nervous system.

Distraction osteogenesis(DO) is a technique of lengthning bone including soft tissue by gradual separation of surgically divided bone surfaces. Distraction osteogenesis combination with a compression stimulation(DO-CO) was a new technique by authors to enhance new bone quality and to shorten the consolidation period. The purpose of this study was to compare DO with DO combined with compression force in efficiency by evaluating the expression of TGF-${\beta}1$, osteonectin and BMP-4 on bone regenerate in rabbit mandible. Fourty two rabbits were used for this experiment. On the control group, the distraction was carried out at the rate of 1 mm per day to obtain the amount of 8 mm distraction for 8 days. On the experimental group, the distraction was carried out at the rate of 1 mm per day for 10 days, 3 days-latency period, and then the compression was carried out as counter direction 1 mm per day for 2 days. After 0 day, 5 days, 13 days, 20 days, 27 days, 34 days and 41 days, three rabbits on each group were sacrificed and the distracted portion of mandible were cut and treated for RT-PCR observation. The level of expression of TGF-${\beta}1$ and osteonectin were shown more and longer expression in the experimental group than in the control group. The expression of BMP-4 was maintained with high level during the entire experimental period in both groups. These findings suggested that DO with compression stimulation could be a favorable technique for obtaining a good new bone quality.
This numerical study investigates seismicity and fault slip induced by fluid injection in deep geothermal reservoir with pre-existing fractures and fault. Particle Flow Code 2D is used with additionally implemented hydro-mechanical coupled fluid flow algorithm and acoustic emission moment tensor inversion algorithm. The output of the model includes spatio-temporal evolution of induced seismicity (hypocenter locations and magnitudes) and fault deformation (failure and slip) in relation to fluid pressure distribution. The model is applied to a case of fluid injection with constant rates changing in three steps using different fluid characters, i.e. the viscosity, and different injection locations. In fractured reservoir, spatio-temporal distribution of the induced seismicity differs significantly depending on the viscosity of the fracturing fluid. In a fractured reservoir, injection of low viscosity fluid results in larger volume of induced seismicity cloud as the fluid can migrate easily to the reservoir and cause large number and magnitude of induced seismicity in the post-shut-in period. In a faulted reservoir, fault deformation (co-seismic failure and aseismic slip) can occur by a small perturbation of fracturing fluid (<0.1 MPa) can be induced when the injection location is set close to the fault. The presented numerical model technique can practically be used in geothermal industry to predict the induced seismicity pattern and magnitude distribution resulting from hydraulic stimulation of geothermal reservoirs prior to actual injection operation.

Introduction: This study aims to investigate the effects of acupuncture stimulation on the radial artery's pressure pulse wave, along with various hemodynamic parameters, and to explore the possible underlying mechanism of pulse diagnosis in healthy participants in their twenties. Methods and analysis: This study is a prospective, single-arm, exploratory clinical study. A total of 25 healthy participants, without regard to gender, in their twenties will be recruited by physicians. Written informed consent will be obtained from all participants. The participants will receive acupuncture once at ST36 on both sides. The radial arterial pulse waves will be measured on the left arm of the subjects by using an applicable pulse tonometric device (KIOM-PAS). On the right arm (appearing twice), electrocardiogram (ECG), photoplethysmogram (PPG), respiration and cardiac output (CO) signals, will be measured using a physiological data acquisition system (Biopac module), while the velocity of blood flow, and the diameter and the depth of the blood vessel will be measured using an ultrasonogram machine on the right arm (appearing twice). All measurements will be conducted before, during, and after acupuncture. The primary outcome will be the spectral energy at high frequencies above 10 Hz ($SE_{10-30Hz}$) calculated from the KIOM-PAS device signal. Secondary outcomes will be various variables obtained from the KIOM-PAS device, ECG, PPG, impedance cardiography modules, and an ultrasonogram machine. Discussion: The results of this trial will provide information regarding the physiological and the hemodynamic mechanisms underlying acupuncture stimulation and clinical evidence for the influence of acupuncture on the pressure pulse wave in the radial artery. Ethics and dissemination: This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Kyung Hee University's Oriental Medical Center, Seoul, Korea (KOMCIRB-150818-HR-030). The study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Trial registration number: This trial was registered with the Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS) at the Korea National Institute of Health (NIH), Republic of Korea (KCT0001663), which is a registry in the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Registry Network.
The purpose of this study was to examined whether high voltage pulsed current stimulation(HVPCS) enhances the migration and proliferation of fibroblasts from tendon biopsies to provides evidence that the cellular activities of fibroblast are enhanced by HVPCS. Flexor digitorum profundus tendon of chickens were excised, biopsied and cultured in M199 medium for a day. The biopsies through which a cathodal HVPC with 100 pps, 50 V for 30 minutes was passed in medium. A day after treatment, the biopsies embedded in fibrin clot were covered by the addition of 1ml of M199 medium to the well, and placed in the $CO_2$ incubator for the duration of the experiment. The migration distance of cells from tendon biopsies were measured at 6 days after treatment, and proliferation of cells from tendon biopsies were measured at 7 days after treatment. The migration distance of cells from tendon biopsies in the HVPCS group demonstrated significantly greater than the shame treated control group (t=-2.675, p<0.05). Also HVPCS had significantly increased optical density of fibroblasts from tendon biopsies (t=-2.136, p<0.05). These results indicate that the HVPCS with 100pps, 50V for 30minutes enhanced either the migration and proliferation of fibroblast from tendon biopsies. These results supposed that the HVPCS activates cellular responses in fibroblasts from tendon biopsies. This suggests that enhanced the migration and proliferation of fibroblast by HVPCS may be one of the mechanism involved in tendon healing.

The purpose of this work is to know the validity of a new stimulation method in cognitive functional imaging using custom-designed images correspond to words or syllables improving the shortcomings of existing method using text. From March 2011 to May five Subjects in need of language related functional MRI scanning were selected and both of text stimulating method and image stimulating method sacanning were carried out three times each. Using 3.0T Philps MRI machine and Invivo Co's Eloquence system, data acquisition was performed with EPI-BOLD technique. Post processing was performed with SPM 99 while the activated signals were determined within 95 percent confidence level. The number of activation clusters and the activation ratio inside ROI were compared. As as result, all of the subject showed activation inside Broca area but it did not have statistical significance. In conclusion, the image sitimulation method has potential because image itself is a common means of recognition and it can be recognised easily even if there language barrier. This stimulation method can be applied to replacing the exising scanning method especially in the elderly, infants, foerigners who may not fully understand about the examination.
This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of action of baclofen on the detrusor muscle isolated from rat. Rats (Sprague-Dawley) were sacrificed by decapitation and exsanguination. Horizontal muscle strips of $2mm{\times}15mm$ were prepared for isometric myography in isolated muscle chamber bubbled with 95% / 5%-$O_2$ / $CO_2$ at $37^{\circ}C$, and the pH was maintained at 7.4. Detrusor strips contracted responding to the electrical field stimulation (EFS) by 2 Hz, 20 msec, monophasic square wave of 60 VDC. The initial peak of EFS-Induced contraction was tended to be suppresed by ${\alpha},{\beta}$-methylene-adenosine 5'-triphosphate (mATP), a partial agonist of purinergic receptor, and baclofen, a $GABA_B$ receptor agonist (statistically nonsignificant). The late sustained contraction by EFS was suppressed significantly (p < 0.05) by additions of atropione, a cholinergic muscarinic receptor antagonist and baclofen. The adenosine 5'-triphosphate-induced contraction was completely abolished by mA TP but not by baclofen. In the presence of atropine, the subsequent addition of acetylcholine could not contract the muscle strips: but the addition of acetylcholine in the presence of baclofen evoked a contraction to a remarkable extent. These results suggest that in the condition of present study, the cholinergic innervation may play a more important role than the purinergic one, and baclofen suppresses the contractility of rat detrusor by the stimulation of the $GABA_B$ receptors to inhibit the release of neurotransmitter from the cholinergic nerve ending.
To improve nuclear transplantation(NT) efficiency and to produce a large scale genetically identical cloned calves, examined the in vitro development capacity after co-culture of bovine oviductal epithelial cells (BOEC) and granulosa cells in TCM-199 supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum (FCS) with early bovine embryos derived from in vitro matured fertilized(IVM-IVF) oocyte. In addition, the age dependence of IVM oocyte on electro-stimulation and the effective electric voltage on in ivtro development of bovine NT embryos were examined. The results obtained were summerized as follows; 1. The cleavage rates of IVM-IVF bovine embryos in co-culture with bovine oviductal epithelial cells and granulosa cells were not significantly different(P<0.05), but the developmental rate into morula and blastocyst stage were different showing 38.3 and 20.2%, respectively. 2. The activation (82.5%) and development in vitro(8.6%) into later embryo stages of the aging oocytes of 32 hours post-maturation (hpm) were significantly higher than those of 24 hpm at direct current (DC) voltage of 1.5kV/cm, 60$\mu$sec pulse duration and 1 pulse time. 3. The fusion rates of NT eggs of 32 hpm following to different DC voltages from range 0.75 to 1.5kV/cm were not differ, but the developmental rate into morula and blastocyst stages at DC voltages of 0.75 and 1.0kV/cm were higher(11.4 and 12.6%, respectively) than those of 1.5kV/cm(0%). From these results, it can be suggested the optimal culture system for in vitro culture of IVM-IVF bovine embryos is a co-culture system with BOEC in TCM-199 supplemented 10% FCS. The effective time and the DC voltage for activation, electrofusion and in vitro development of NT embryos derived from IVM-IVF bovine embryo are 32hpm and 0.75~1.0kV/cm. But to improve NT efficiency, the advanced research (cell cycle synchronization, micromanipulation, culture system, etc.) is needed.
The study was conducted to estimate stimulation of plant growth of blue and red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) as affected by covering methods with vinyl materials containing concentrated PO film. Plants were grown in direct, direct and tunnel, and tunnel covering with 'Pasraido materials' from October 13 to 31. With the covering mean air temperature, soil temperature, leaf temperature and relative humidity remarkedly increased. Higher temperature was observed in the order of direct and tunnel, direct, tunnel covering and the control. Photosynthetic photon flux (PPF, $\mu$mol m$^{-2}$ . s$^{-1}$ ) was observed in reverse order of temperature. Concentration of $CO_2$ was higher during night than during day under the light. Accumulation of highest $CO_2$ at night was obtained from direct coverings followed by direct and tunnel, tunnel covering and the control. Plant height, leaf number and leaf area of blue and red lettuces were stimulated by direct covering. However, there was no significant difference.

Many probiotic species have been used as a fermentation starter for manufacturing functional food materials. We have isolated Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LDTM 8102 from the feces of infants as a novel strain for fermentation. While Glycine max has been known to display various bioactivities including anti-oxidant, anti-skin aging, and anti-cancer effects, the immune-modulatory effect of Glycine max has not been reported. In the current study, we have discovered that the extract of Glycine max fermented with B. animalis subsp. lactis LDTM 8102 (GFB 8102), could exert immuno-modulatory properties. GFB 8102 treatment increased the production of immune-stimulatory cytokines in RAW264.7 macrophages without any noticeable cytotoxicity. Analysis of the molecular mechanism revealed that GFB 8102 could upregulate MAPK2K and MAPK signaling pathways including ERK, p38, and JNK. GFB 8102 also increased the proliferation rate of splenocytes isolated from mice. In an animal study, administration of GFB 8102 partially recovered cyclophosphamide-mediated reduction in thymus and spleen weight. Moreover, splenocytes from the GFB 8102-treated group exhibited increased TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β production. Based on these findings, GFB 8102 could be a promising functional food material for enhancing immune function.
