  • New porphyrin square (1) was prepared by reaction of porphyrin containing pyridine and $Re(CO)_5Cl$ in THF/toluene solvent. 2-(Methylenel5-crown-5)-nicotinoly ester(2) was synthesized by reaction of 2-(Hydroxymethyl-15-crown-5 and nicotinoly chloride in $CH_2Cl_2$. In fluorescence quenching studies luminescence was quenched by addition of the guest(2) into host(l). In the host-guest system we could obtain binding constant (K=$1.13{\times}10^7M^{-1}$) at decreasing concentration of (2). But the luminescence was dramatically increased after $Na^+$ was added into the host-guest system.

  • Catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide for the simultaneous synthesis of methanol and dimethyl ether (together called oxygenates) over a combination of methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration catalysts has been studied. Various methanol synthesis and methanol dehydration catalysts were examined for this reaction. The addition of promotors like $Ga_2O_3\; and\; Cr_2O_3$ to Cu/ZnO catalyst gave much more enhanced yield on the formation of oxygenates. From the results, the promotional effect of $Cr_2O_3$ has been explained in terms of increase in the intrinsic activity of Cu while that of $Ga_2O_3$ being increase in the dispersion of Cu. Among the methanol dehydration catalysts examined, the solid acids bearing high population of intermediate-strength acid sites were found to be very effective for the production of oxygenates. HY zeolite which contains strong acid sites produce small amount of hydrocarbons as by-products. However, CuNaY zeolite in which the presence of strong acid sites are minimum gives very high oxygenates yield without the formation of hydrocarbons.

  • This study investigated the effects of conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) on the fat deposition, triglyceride levels and the expression of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1(SCD1) in the livers of male ICR mice that were fed with either soybean oil or beef tallow supplemented with CLA. Mice weighing $25{\sim}30$ g were divided into four groups; soybean oil(SBO), and SBO supplemented with 1% CLA(SBOC), beef tallow(BT) and BT supplemented with 1% CLA(BTC). Each group consisted of 10 mice that were fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. The experimental diets consisted of 64% carbohydrate, 20% protein, and 16% fat in terms of their contributions to total calories. All other nutrients were identical in the diets. Triglyceride measurements were completed using a kit. Fatty acid compositions were analyzed in the liver using gas chromatography. The levels of SCD1 expression were analyzed by RT-PCR in the liver. No significant differences were found for food intake level, body weight and food efficiency among the experimental groups. However, the weights of epididymal fat pads and plasma triglyceride levels were significantly lower in SBOC and BTC(p<0.05) compared to the SBO and BT groups. These effects were similar in the CLA supplemented groups. The expression level of SCD1 gene and ${\Delta}9$ desaturase index were not significantly different, regardless of the fat used for CLA supplementation. Based on these results, addition of CLA showed decreasing effects on the fat depots weight and the concentration of triglyceride regardless of the fat sources. The SCD1 gene expression and ${\Delta}9$ desaturase index were not influenced by the types of fats with respect to the CLA effects.

  • Layered $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode materials single- and dual-doped by the rare-earth elements Ce and Nd are successfully fabricated by using a coprecipitation-assisted solid-phase method. For comparison purposes, non-doping pristine $LiNi_{0.83}Co_{0.11}Mn_{0.06}O_2$ cathode material is also prepared using the same method. The crystal structure, morphology, and electrochemical performances are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) mapping, and electrochemical techniques. The XRD data demonstrates that all prepared samples maintain a typical ${\alpha}-NaFeO_2$-layered structure with the R-3m space group, and that the doped samples with Ce and/or Nd have lower cation mixing than that of pristine samples without doping. The results of SEM and EDS show that doped elements are uniformly distributed in all samples. The electrochemical performances of all doped samples are better than those of pristine samples without doping. In addition, the Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material shows the best cycling performance and the least capacity loss. At a 10 C-rate, the electrodes of Ce/Nd dual-doped cathode material exhibit good capacity retention of 72.7, 58.5, and 45.2% after 100, 200, and 300 cycles, respectively, compared to those of pristine samples without doping (24.4, 11.1, and 8.0%).

  • Through a survey on dietary intake of children and adolescents with brain lesions, the present study aimed to analyze the current status of nutrient intake and examine the effect of high-protein nutrient drink on their nutritional and muscle statuses. The study participants were 90 juvenile participants aged 8-19 years, with brain lesions. The participants were provided with a protein nutrient drink for 12 weeks and a questionnaire survey on dietary intake was performed to analyze the level of nutrient intake before and after ingestion. The physical measurements were taken to determine the improvements in nutrient and muscle statuses. The results showed that, before the intake of protein nutrient drink as a supplement, the participants exhibited lower height, weight, and body mass index than those of the standard levels of healthy individuals, and the level of nutrient intake through diet was lower than those of the required and recommended levels of nutrient intake for Koreans. Conversely, after the intake of protein nutrient drink for 12 weeks, the level of nutrient intake and physical statuses such as weight showed significant improvements. In addition, the muscle status had undergone approximately 10% of change during the intervention with no significant difference. Thus, to ensure an adequate level of nutrient supply to children and adolescents with brain lesions, there is an urgent need to develop a guideline of nutrient intake. The findings in this study are expected to serve as the basic data for such guidelines.

  • The effects of replacement level, curing method and chemical admixtures were investigated in the cement-fly ash paste. The strength of cement-fly ash paste is lower than that of controlled cement paste only and the differences increase with replacement level. However, in steam curing, strength of cement-fly ash pastes is improved, especially, at early ages. In order to improve early strength, the use of $Na_2SO_4$in cement-fly ash paste increases the quality of concrete. In addition, improvement of strength of concrete including 30% of fly ash can be obtained and achieves the highest strength compared to other concrete mixtures.

  • Diffusion coating(metalliding) of aluminium on steel from molten fluorides(29.2wt.% LiF-11.7wt.% NaF-59.1wt.% KF, FLINAK) was studied. The electrolytic cell consists of a steel cathode and a consumable aluminium anode. Effects of manganese on the aluminium deposition were also investigated. The quality of the deposit was analyzed by SEM, OM, EPMA, EDXA, and also examined by means of Micro-Vickers hardness and corrosion tests. Deposit layer was identified as an aluminium-rich iron alloy caused by diffusion process. The optimum condition for the metalliding was found to be the current density, 50 to $150mA/\textrm{cm}^2$, the bath tem-perature, $57.5^{\circ}C$, and the amount of AlF3, 10wt.%. Addition of manganese fluoride (up to 5wt.%) as a co-de-posit element improved significantly the quality of the deposit layer.

  • Outdoor cultivation of cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis was carried out for 40 days in a batch mode. A half concentration of the SOT based on the underground water was used as culture medium. Working volume was 5.7 tons with 0.2 m depth. During cultivation, mean water temperature, DO and light intensity were all in proper conditions for the S. platensis growth. The adjustment of pH to over 10 with Na2CO3 and addition of the 1.5% natural salt were very effective to delete contaminant organisms, Chlamydomonas moewusii and Chlorella minutissima occurred one after the other in the culture. The mean productivity of the biomass based on the dry cell weight from 14 to 25 days, after the contaminants were deleted, was 7.8 g ·m–2· d–1, which was relatively high productivity in that a half concentration of the SOT was used for the culture. Underground water used in the culture minimized contaminants invasion and addition of the 1.5% natural salt was effective to delete contaminants as well as acted as mineral supplement in outdoor cultivation of S. platensis. Harvesting using the floating activity of S. platensis was effective from mass floating in day time after overnight without agitation and illumination.

  • Fluorination of drinking water has been used world widely to reduce the incidence of caries. Recently, contradictory results on the cytotoxicity of fluoride compounds are reported. In addition, there are attempts to use fluorosilicate for fluorination of drinking water in Korea, therefore, we tried to analyze the cytotoxicity of fluoride compounds on oral epidermoid carcinoma (KB and A253) and osteosarcoma (HOS and MG-63) cells in this study. We treated cells with 0, 10, 50 and 250 ppm of fluorosilicic acid (domestic or from Fluka, F$\_$6/H$_2$Si), sodium fluorosilicate (F$\_$6/Na$_2$Si), sodium fluoroacetate (FCH$_2$CO$_2$Na), sodium fluoride (NaF) or potassium fluoride(KF) and measured the relative cell survival by MTT assay. At the concentration of < 10ppm, no significant cytotoxicity was observed. At 50 ppm, each cells revealed different response to fluoride treatment. Among cells used in this study, MG-63 was the most resistant to fluoride treatment. Comparable toxicity data from domestic and imported fluorosilicic acids were obtained. When we compared the relative cytotoxicity of fluoride compounds against their fluoride contents, the differences in relative cell survival were smaller. Most of cells showed < 20% of survival at 250 ppm. In order to analyze the pH dependence of the cytotoxicity of fluorosilicates, the pH of cell culture media containing fluorosilicate was adjusted to 7.4 or 6.5 and the relative cytotoxicity was measured. At lower pH, about 10% higher cytotoxicity was obtained. Thus, our data suggested that the toxicity of domestic fluorosilicic acid was similar to that of fluorosilicic acid from Fluka, and the cytotoxicity of fluoride compounds was dependent on the relative content of fluoride and pH.

  • Elemental mobility during the weathering of granite in the Gwangju Hyangdeung area was investigated using ICP-MS analysis. It appeared that Al, Fe, Ti, K were lost from the profile, whereas Si, Ca, Na Mg, P and Mn were immobile during chemical weathering. In less weathered soil, large enrichment of K and Ti were found relative to Al, whereas other elements such as Si, Ca, Na, Mg and P are deplete. Fe content is constant throughout the weathered profiles. Amounts of Rb, Sr, Y, Cs, Pb, Th and U increased toward the surface. Nb, and Co have accumulated in the deepest parts of the weathered soil profile. These results agree with similar published studies. In addition, the analytical data shows that Ba and Ga increased, while Cu, Zn, Cr and Ni were relatively constant in this area. REE tend to increase in most samples, while LREEs, relative to Al, were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite. HREEs were enriched in the lower and upper saprolite.
