  • A damper clutch in automatic transmission systems has some advantages of fuel economy and dynamic performance. Although a damper clutch operation improves a fuel economy of the vehicles, a positive operation of a damper clutch in a low vehicle speed induces abnormal vibration. This paper analyzed one of reasons for abnormal vibration by a damper clutch operation in low engine speed ranges. A simulation model was designed to confirm the effects of a damper clutch operation under unstable regions of an engine. A theoretical analysis was carried out about an engine operation stability. Simulation was conducted to depict abnormal vibration by a damper clutch operation in unstable regions of an engine performance curve. The effects of an engine operation region for abnormal vibration by a damper clutch was investigated according to the range and the slope of unstable regions. As a result of simulations, a damper clutch operation would be better to avoid an engine unstable regions.

  • A FEM-based efficient method is developed for the shape optimization of 2-D structures. The combined SLP and Simplex method are coupled with finite element analysis. Selected set of master nodes on the design boundaries are employed as design variables and assigned to move towards their normal directions. The other nodes along the design boundaries are grouped into the master node. By interpolating the repositioned master nodes, the B-spline curves are formed so that the rest mid-nodes efficiently settle down on the B-spline curves. Mesh smoothing scheme is also applied for the nodes on the design boundary to maintain most finite elements in good quality. Finally, a numerical implementation of optimum design of an automobile torque converter piston subjected to pressure and centrifugal loads is presented. The results shows additional weight up to 13% may be saved after the shape optimization.

  • The input torque ripple induced by combustion engines is a significant source of NVH(noise, vibration and harshness) problem in automotive transmissions. Because this torque fluctuation is primarily transmitted to the input shaft of automotive powertrains(e.g., automatic transmissions) when the lock-up clutches are closed, a torsional damper with helical springs is generally inserted between engine and transmissions to isolate the input vibratory energy, which is essential for the passenger comfort. The torsional vibration isolator exhibits frequency ranges in which there is low vibration transmissibility. However, the isolation performance is currently evaluated through the static torsional spring characteristics. In this study, the transmissibility of torsional spring dampers, essential dynamic performance index for vibration isolator, is first experimentally evaluated.

  • This paper presents a proof-of-concept study on the evaluation of torsional vibration isolation performance through in-situ output torque measurement by using a non-contacting magneto-elastic torque transducer installed in the vehicle driveline system. The de-trending processing is first conducted to extract the torsional vibration from the measured driveline output torque. In order to estimate the transmissibility, primary performance indicator of a vibration isolator, the magnitude of transmitted torsional vibration with different frequencies is compared. From the conservative estimation results, the torsional damper built in a lock-up clutch of a torque converter is identified to be a vibration isolator. The evaluation results show that the fluid damping by torque converter outperforms the vibration isolation function of a torsional damper, and the isolation performance needs to be enhanced.

  • In order to improve the fuel economy by design change of automatic transmission, various technologies such as increased shift stages, slip control of lock-up clutch and compact and low-weight design have been developed. And also many OEMs have developed their own ATFs as a part of these automatic transmissions. In this study. to investigate the effects of ATF characteristics on fuel economy, we got the worldwide OEM ATFs and made some reference fluids. And physical properties, frictional characteristics and fuel economy using dynamometer test for these fluids were evaluated. From the investigation, it was found that viscosities of ATFs are correlated with fuel economy in dynamometer test and reducing the viscosities made it possible to obtain fuel economy.

  • In this study, electronically controlled automatic transmission adopted on a subcompact model in the market was modelled, and the driving performances of the transmission were simulated with the models. Kinetic and dynamic models of working components are established. The driving simulation program is developed with those models, and the various driving conditions are analyzed. With the results, the dynamic behaviour of the engine and the automatic transmission is easily understood. Especially, the transient performances of torque converter and clutches are deeply analyzed. Skipping the vehicle road test by using this analyzing tool, we can expect the cost down and the reduction of the development period of automatic transmission.

  • The torque converter is deformed according to the rotating speed and control pressure when engine power is transferred to the transmission. This deformation, which is called ballooning phenomenon, occurs mainly at the outer side by the centrifugal force of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) and the control pressure from the valve body. Although the torque converter is slightly deformed when rotating, the ballooning phenomenon affects fluid performance, efficiency and durability. Thus, expansion characteristics analysis is important in determining torus size, control pressure and structure. In this paper, an analysis equation and FEM model was developed to investigate the expansion characteristics. Using this model, structural analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between deformation and the torus diameter. The results were confirmed by comparing with the test results.
