  • A method is proposed to reduce excess resources from a virtual machine(VM) while avoiding subsequent migrations for a computer cluster that provides cloud service. The proposed scheme cuts down on the resources of a VM based on the probability that migration may occur after a reduction. First, it finds a VM that can be scaled down by analyzing the history of the resource usage. Then, the migration probability is calculated as a function of the VM resource usage trend and the trend error. Finally, the amount of resources needed to eliminate from an underutilized VM is determined such that the migration probability after the resource reduction is less than or equal to an acceptable migration probability. The acceptable migration probability, to be set by the cloud service provider, is a criterion to assign a weight to the resource reduction either to prevent VM migrations or to enhance VM utilization. The results of simulation show that the proposed scheme lowers migration frequency by 31.6~60.8% depending on the consistency of resource demand while losing VM utilization by 9.1~21.5% compared to other known approaches, such as the static and the prediction-based methods. It is also verified that the proposed scheme extends the elapsed time before the first occurrence of migration after resource reduction 1.1~2.3-fold. In addition, changes in migration frequency and VM utilization are analyzed with varying acceptable migration probabilities and the consistency of resource demand patterns. It is expected that the analysis results can help service providers choose a right value of the acceptable migration probability under various environments having different migration costs and operational costs.

  • This paper is about to improve the network life's reduction due to the deviation of sensor node and frequently change of network, the main problem of sensor network. The existing Scalable Topology Organization(STO)-based ZigBee Tree Topology Control Algorithm did not consider ways to consume power so the network lifetime is too short. Accordingly, per each round, electing a new parent node and consisting of the new network topology technique, The Cluster Header Selection, extending the network's overall lifetime. The OMNet++ Simulator yielded results from the existing STO Algorithm and the proposed Cluster Header Selection Technique in the same experimental environment, which resulted in an increase in overall network life by about 40% and an improvement of about 10% in performance in the remaining portion of the battery.

  • The current study investigated CVCC syllables in spontaneous American English speech to find out whether such syllables are produced as phonological units with a string of segments, showing a hierarchical structure. Transcribed data from the Buckeye Speech Corpus was used for the analysis in this study. The result of the current study showed that the constituents within a CVCC syllable as a phonological unit may have phonetic variations (namely, the final coda may undergo deletion). First, voiceless alveolar stops were the most frequently deleted when they occurred as the second final coda consonants of a CVCC syllable; this deletion may be an intermediate process on the way from the abstract form CVCC (with the rime VCC) to the actual pronunciation CVC (with the rime VC), a production strategy employed by some individual speakers. Second, in the internal structure of the rime, the proportion of deletion of the final coda consonant depended on the frequency of the word rather than on the position of postvocalic consonants on the sonority hierarchy. Finally, the segment following the consonant cluster proved to have an effect on the reduction of that cluster; more precisely, the following contrast was observed between obstruents and non-obstruents, reflecting the effect of sonority: when the segment following the consonant cluster was an obstruent, the proportion of deletion of the final coda consonant was increased. Among these results, the effect of word frequency played a critical role for promoting the deletion of the second coda consonant for clusters in CVCC syllables in spontaneous speech. The current study implies that the structure of syllables as phonological units can vary depending on individual speakers' lexical representation.

  • We present UBV CCD photomety of the metal-poor globular cluster M30. The data were obtained using the 40 inch telescope at Mt. Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatory (MSSSO). We used DAOPHOT CCD reduction package in order to obtain Color-Magnitude Diagram (CMD). We have derived some fundametal parameters of the globular cluster such as metal abundance ([Fe/H]), helium abundance (Y), and distance modulus (m-M) from the CMD. The derived parameters were [Fe/H]=-2.50, Y=0.28, and (m-M)=14.64. From the latter, the distance of 8.3kpc is obtained. Despite the photometric uncertainty near the main-sequence turnoff, we estimate the age of M30 to be 1.6${\pm}$3 Gyrs from the Revised Yale Isocyrones. If [O/Fe]=+0.4, this age will be reduced to 14.2${\pm}$3 Gyrs.

  • Etching endpoint detection with plasma impedance monitoring (PIM) is demonstrated for small area dielectric layers inductive coupled plasma etching. The endpoint is determined by the impedance harmonic signals variation from the I-V monitoring system. Measuring plasma impedance has been examined as a relatively simple method of detecting variations in plasma and surface conditions without contamination at low cost. Cluster analysis algorithm is modified and applied to real-time endpoint detection for sensitivity enhancement in this work. For verification, the detected endpoint by PIM and real-time cluster analysis is compared with widely used optical emission spectroscopy (OES) signals. The proposed technique shows clear improvement of sensitivity with significant noise reduction when it is compared with OES signals. This technique is expected to be applied to various plasma monitoring applications including fault detections as well as end point detection.

  • Instrumental studies (e.g., aerodynamic, EPG, and EMMA) have shown that the first of two stops in sequence can be articulatorily reduced in time and space sometimes; either gradient or categorical. The current EMMA study aims to examine possible factors_linguistic (e.g., speech rate, word boundary, and prosodic boundary) and paralinguistic (e.g., natural context and repetition)_to induce gradient reduction of $C_1$ in /pk/ cluster sequences. EMMA data are collected from five Seoul-Korean speakers. The results show that gradient reduction of lip aperture seldom occurs, being quite restricted both in speaker frequency and in token frequency. The results also suggest that the place assimilation is not a lexical process, implying that speakers have not fully developed this process to be phonologized in the abstract level.

  • The magnetic effects connected to finite-size of the particles become dominant at transition of particles in region several nanometers and less [1]. At reduction of atom numbers in magnetic cluster (tens or hundreds atoms), along the classical features, essential appear the quantum phenomena resulting in spin transformation of magnetic structure, both with reduction of the size and at applying of an external magnetic field. • Clustering is a method to classify the given data set with same property into several classes. To cluster data, many methods such as K-Means, Fuzzy C-Means(FCM), Mountain Method(MM), and etc, have been proposed and used. But the clustering results of conventional methods are sensitively influenced by initial values given for clustering in each method. Especially, FCM is very sensitive to noisy data, and cluster center distortion phenomenon is occurred because the method dose clustering through minimization of within-clusters variance. In this paper, we propose a clustering method which reduces cluster center distortion through merging the nearest data based on the data weight, and not being influenced by initial values. We show the effectiveness of the proposed through experimental results applied it to various types of data sets, and comparison of cluster centers with those of FCM.

  • Sometimes called the Silicon Fen, the Cambridge cluster is well known as the most innovative hi-tech cluster in the world. This paper attempts to explore the evolutionary dynamics of the Cambridge cluster, drawing upon the triple-helix approach. To understand the evolutionary dynamics of the Cambridge cluster, it is important to examine the role and impact of the University of Cambridge, which is conceived as one of the best higher educational institutions in the world. The Cambridge cluster has been evolved on the basis of a strong university-industry relationship. University spin-outs have a long tradition in Cambridge with the history of more than a century, and they have played a critical role in making the cluster more innovative. Business networks and social capital molded for a long time in the region become a foundation for active local spin-out activities. However, since 2000 the central government started steadily to require British universities to be an entrepreneurial university, with the purpose of the reduction of university subsidies. As a result of this, spin-out activities in the Cambridge cluster show a sharp decline, which is a factor of threatening the dynamic evolution of the cluster.
