  • For the development of integrated pest management system by harmonizing biological and chemical control, some experiments wee carried out to select low toxic pesticides against natural enemies. and their residual toxicity were evaluated. Leaf dipping method, body dipping method, and diet treatment method were set up for the toxicity evaluation against Cotesia glomerata adults. We had tested 46 different pesticides (31 insecticides, 11 fungicides, 4 herbicides) at recommending concentration commonly used to control diamond back moth, disease and up-land weeds in chinese cabbage field. Twenty three insecticides, eleven fungicides, and four herbicides were shown to be low toxic to C. glomerata adults in the treatment of body dipping. After insecticide spraying at recommending dose on the chinese cabbage, we examined residual effect of insecticides by introducing natural enemies on different days. Safety interval for the introduction of C. glomerata adults was established according to the residual toxicity of pesticides. Safe insecticides for the introduction of C. glomerata adults at one day after treatment (DAT) were thiacloprid, acephate, chlorfenapyr, clothianidin and at 3 DAT were imidacloprid, deltamethrin, thiamethoxam, dimethylvinphos, emamectin benzoate.

  • The susceptibility of Dermanyssus gallinae adults, collected from poultry farms in 5 regions, to 11 acaricides was investigated. When bifenthrin and formic acid with pyridaben were diluted 100 times, bifenthrin showed 100% acaricidal activity; however, formic acid with pyridaben showed less than 20% acaricidal activity for poultry farms in 3 regions (Gyeongju, Chilgok, and Geumsan) except Yeoncheon and Anseong. The carbamate compound, carbaryl showed 100% acaricidal activity in most of the regions, except Gyeongju. A phosphorus compound, dichlorvos showed 100% activity in most of the regions, yet 66.7% acaricidal activity in Yeoncheon. The susceptibility of D. gallinae from poultry farms in Yeoncheon and Anseong to most acaricides was high; however, in the other farms, the susceptibility of D. gallinae varied depending on the acaricide. Clothianidin, thiamethoxam, fenitrothion, and formic acid with pyridaben showed differences in acaricidal activity among regions. Therefore, farmers should concentrate during the selection of these acaricides. However, carbaryl, cartap hydrochloride, dichlorvos, and bifenthrin showed high activity against D. gallinae collected from poultry farms in five regions. Therefore, these acaricides could be used in most of these regions. To control D. gallinae effectively, the alternation of acaricides is necessary, and indiscriminate pesticide use should be avoided. Therefore, this study can serve as a basis for controlling D. gallinae.

  • A series of studies were conducted to monitor the seasonal occurrences of onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) and allium leafminers (Acrolepiopsis sapporensis) in northern-type garlic fields, and to evaluate their susceptibility to insecticides. The results showed that the T. tabaci population density increased from mid- March to mid-June, that of A. sapporensis began to increase in mid-March and peaked twice by early July. Also, using recommended concentrations, the insecticidal activities of nine insecticides against these two pests were evaluated. Under laboratory conditions, clothianidin SC, chlorfenapyr EC, dimethoate EC, imidacloprid WP, and cyantraniliprole + thiamethoxam WG insecticidal activities against T. tabaci were all 100%, as well as. those of cyantraniliprole EC, pyridalyl EW, spinetoram SG and abamectin + chlorantraniliprole SC against A. sapporensis. Insecticides, with high insecticidal activities, were evaluated on the two pests under laboratory conditions, and the results showed that all the insecticides exhibited strong insecticidal activities, and the mortality of two pests was >90%.

  • Thiamethoxam is one of the main suspect in honeybee colony collapse disorder (CCD). Due to this reason, thiamethoxam including imidacloprid and clothianidin has been banned for two years in some Europe countries. The CCD phenomenon has also been reported in Korea. Regarding this issue and needs, a new project has started to develop the method for the quatitation of thiamethoxam using isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS). In the process of optimization for the IDMS method with thiamethoxam and $thiamethoxam-d_3$, we observed that the fragment peaks did not correspond to the fragmentation pathway as published elsewhere. Here, we proposed a candidate fragmentation pathway. To validate the proposed fragmentation pathway, another isotope analogue, $thiamethoxam-d_4$, was introduced and the MS/MS spectra of both isotope analogues were compared. In addition, the MS/MS/MS spectra of thiamethoxam were inspected for more evidence of the candidate pathway. Those spectra indicated that the proposed fragmentation pathway could be used to assign the fragment peaks of thiamethoxam.

  • Honey bees (Apis mellifera) forage in agricultural areas, and are exposed to diverse pesticide poisoning. Toxic effects on Apis mellifera of different groups of pesticides were tested in the laboratory; fungicide (Metconazole), herbicide (Glyphosate), acaricide (Amitraz), organophosphate insecticide(Fenitrothion) and neonicotinoid insecticides(Thiacloprid, Thiamethoxam, Imidacloprid, Acetamiprid, Dinotefuran and Clothianidin). Commercial formulations were serially diluted from the recommended concentration (RC) to 10-6 times to carry out feeding and contact tests. Toxicity was transformed into lethal dose (LD50) and hazard question (HQ). The acute toxicity of pesticides showed similar patterns between feeding and contact tests. But feeding tests showed greater toxic to honey bee than contact test. The organophosphate and nitro-neonicotinoid insecticides were highly toxic with HQ values ranging greater than 1. However, cyano-neonicotinoids of Thiacloprid and Acetamiprid showed low toxicity. Even at the RC, 24 hr mortalities were 18 and 30%. The acaricide (Amitraz) showed intermediate level of toxicity at RC but negligible at the concentration lower than 10-1 times. A fungicide(Metconazole) and herbicide(Glyphosate) showed minimal impacts. The results imply that the selective use of pesticides could help conservation of pollinators in agricultural production systems.

  • Toxicity of several insecticides was tested against the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and adult Gymnosoma rotundatum (Diptera: Tachinidae) in a sweet persimmon orchard. H. halys was captured using black light traps and G. rotundatum adults were collected using sticky traps lured with an aggregation pheromone, methyl-(E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate of Plautia stali. Five insecticides, namely, bifenthrin 2 WP, buprofenzine+dinotefuran (20+15) WP, clothianidin 8 SC, dinotefuran 10 WP, and thiamethoxam 10 WP, were moderately toxic to G. rotundatum, resulting in 55.3% to 74.3% mortality. Bifenthrin 2 WP caused 93.1% mortality at 72 h within cages as a residual toxicity, and others caused varied mortalities.

  • The white peach scale (Pseudaulacaspis pentagona) is a significant pest of trees belonging to the Rosaceae family. We investigated the effect of ten insecticides on hatching rate of first instar white peach scale larvae (crawlers). The insecticides are Dinotefuran WG, Benfuracarb WG, Pyrifluquinazon WG, Clothianidin SG, Buprofezin WP, Buprofezin+Imidacloprid SC, Buprofezin+Etofenprox WG, Buprofezin+Thiacloprid SC, Benfuracarb+Buprofezin WG, Acetamiprid+Buprofezin EC. We observed that several crawlers emerged in early May, with the average number being 45.7. Hatching period was approximately 14 days, and the hatching success rate was approximately 77.7%. Overwintering females produced an average of 58.7 eggs. All insecticides achieved 100% mortality in crawlers. Our results suggest that these insecticides can effectively control white peach scale when used at the crawler stage.

  • This survey was carried out in 2014 to estimate the pesticide residue levels in commercial environment-friendly agricultural products in Seoul metropolitan area. Pesticide residues in 27 commodities were examined and analyzed using LC-MS/MS, which can simultaneously detect up to 85 pesticides. A total of 441 samples were collected and analyzed. Among the detected samples, the residue levels in 1.2% of organic agricultural products and 2.2% of pesticide-free agricultural products exceeded the maximum residue limits (MRLs); hence, 1.8% of the total samples exceeded the MRLs. The safety of the detected pesticides was assessed by monitoring the acceptable daily intake level (ADI) and acceptable dietary exposure (ADE) to the pesticides via consumption of the commodities. ADI and ADE are found to be 0.07728-9.46530% and 0.00141-0.17210%, respectively, which means that the residual pesticides in the environmental-friendly agricultural products in Korea are below the safe limit and therefore, pose no potential public health risks.
