  • A 2.9 kg, eight-year-old Yorkshire terrier bitch with anorexia and vomiting for 2 weeks was referred to the Seoul National University Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital. The bitch was diagnosed as open cervix pyometra by clinical sign, radiography, ultrasonography and complete blood count. The owner didn't want surgery. So, we chose the electroacupuncture and antibiotics treatment. Electroacupuncture treatment was performed for 15 days at Zi-Gong-Shu and Luan-Chao-Shu acupoints with electrical stimulus at the frequency of 5 Hz, 2~4 volts and for 20 minutes twice a day and ciprofloxacin (5 mg/kg, IM) was administered once a day. At 15 days after treatment diameter of the uterus was contracted to 6.9 mm and total WBC count was 8.5$\times$10$^3$/㎣, progesteron concentration was 0.24 ng/dl and clinical signs including vaginal discharge were disappeared. The first estrus was detected 5 months after the last treatment. With this results, the electroacupuncture for canine open cervix pyometra was considered to be the useful alternative treatment.

  • This is to report the result of the clinical treatment of One Proteinuria patient who has been hospitalized from January 2003 to August 2003 in Kwangdong Oriental Medicine Hospital. Proteinuria is an important sign of renal disease. It is very useful to estimate the patterns of proteinuria in differential diagnosis of renal disease. One patient have been diagnosed as the determination of the protein creatinine ratio when properly interpreted can replace the total urine collection for 24 hours in the clinical question of proteinuria when hospitalized. Therefore, We met One patient having Proteinuria and acquired good result by treatment with Taeyeumin Jowesungcheongtang plus jejo and bupeong for 4months. This paper describe the process and contents about the patient was cured.

  • Basal cell carcinoma(BCC) is malignant epithelial neoplasm arising from either basal cells or pluripotential appendageal cells of the epidermis. BCC is the most common cutaneous malignancy, especially in sun-exposed sites, such as head and neck. But its occurrence on the finger is very rare. We experienced a case of BCC arising on the dorsal surface of the middle finger of a young woman. This case is not associated with any predisposing factors such as basal cell nevus syndrome, trauma, or preexistent dermatosis. Following surgical removal of the lesion, the defect was covered with full-thickness skin graft. The patient has presented no sign of relapse for 1 year of clinical follow-up. We report this rare case of BCC in terms of age and location.

  • Phase I clinical trials are often pharmacologically oriented and usually attempt to find the best dose of drug to employ. However, other purposes like determination of sizes and types of side effects and toxicity and organ system involved are equally important. Estimation of treatment effects or side effects is usually ignored since it is usually based on too small sample, even though Phase II clinical trials would be designed based on the Phase I studies. Statistical methods for constructing the approximate confidence interval for population median in case of small sample are considered and an improved method is proposed. The proposed estimator is compared with current methods through simulation studies.

  • Neurolymphomatosis (NL) is characterized by the infiltration of malignant lymphoma cells into peripheral nerves, nerve roots, plexuses, or cranial nerves. This is a very rare complication of mantle-cell lymphoma. Diagnosing NL is made difficult by cerebrospinal fluid cytology and bone-marrow biopsy results often being negative. NL can appear as the only sign of recurrence in a patient with a previous diagnosis of lymphoma. Here we present two cases of NL in patients with mantle-cell lymphoma diagnosed by positron emission tomography with deoxy-fluoro-D-glucose integrated with computed tomography.

  • A nine-month-old Pomeranian dog with exercise intolerance and syncope was presented. The dog was depressed with grade 4 systolic murmur on cardiac auscultation. Based on cardiac examination, the dog was diagnosed with severe subaortic stenosis with involvement of the anterior mitral valve. ${\beta}-blocker$ administration was initiated and clinical signs were improved, but not fully resolved. Balloon valvuloplasty was performed and the dog survived for nearly one year without clinical sign and the cardiac troponin I level was normalized. This case describes successful management of severe subaortic stenosis in a small breed dog through balloon valvuloplasty.

  • Background: Infectious mononucleosis is a disease precipitated by Epstein-Barr virus(EBV) in mostly children, some seronegative adolescents and young adults comprising clinical symptoms such as fever, lymphadenopathy, and pharyngitis as well as laboratory findings such as hetero-phil antibodies and atypical lymphocytosis. It is confirmed by serologic test for EBV. Materials and Methods: A retrospective evaluation of 26 patients who diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis was peformed through the analysis of typical symptom, sign and laboratory findings. Results : Infectious mononucleosis occurs mostly at 3 to 10 years (74.9%), common symptoms and signs are fever, cervical lymphadenopathy, tonsillar enlargement and exudate. Positive ratio of atypical Lymphocyte(>10%) and hetrophil antibodies are 61.5%, 35.2% respectively, it is less diagnostic. EBV-viral capsid antigen(VCA) IgM are positive in all cases, so it is most diagnostic findings. Conclusion: Infectious mononucleosis should be considered as a cause of cervical lymphadenopathy and pharyngotonsillitis in children and young adults, the assessment of EBV-VCA IgM is necessary for the diagnosis.

  • A 3 year-old male American Pit Bull Terrier in Kwang-Ju, Chonnam was admitted to the Teaching Animal Hospital, Chonbuk National University. He showed convulsive spasms of skeletal muscles, raised tail-head, and rigidity of rigidity. Based on these clinical sign\ulcorner tetanus was suspected Hematological test results showed and WBC value (21 ,800/$\mu$l/) with neutrophils (17.877/$\mu$l) and monocytes (1.744/$\mu$l). The blood chemical values ALT (86 IU/L) and AST (119 IU/L) were elevated. Fecal sample from the dog was cultured in anaerobic chamber. A Gram positive, drumstick shaped bacteria was isolated. The bacteria was identified as Clostridium tetani by biological and biochemical tests. The dog was hospitalized in a quiet place where the light was cut off and treated with penicillin G procaine and phenobarbital sodium. The dog made a complete recovery 25 days after treatment.
