Methods : The collected data were analyzed by the SPSS WIN 15.0. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained to figure out the general characteristics of the students. To grasp their satisfaction level with clinical practice and major, another statistical data on mean and standard deviation were obtained, and t-test and one-way ANOVA were carried out and correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Results : As for the relationship between general characteristics and satisfaction with clinical practice, their collective average was 3.29. The dental hygiene students who were more satisfied with their major expressed higher satisfaction with the practicums, the content of practice and clinical practice. In relation to the impact of the satisfaction of the dental hygiene students with major on their satisfaction with clinical practice, the students who were more satisfied with social awareness and with the courses expressed better satisfaction with clinical practice. • Background: The present study aimed to analyze which curriculum is the most relevant to dental hygiene students when they participate in clinical practice in order to provide a useful reference for preparing educational guidance in this field. Method: The survey utilized in the present study consisted of six questions about general characteristics, such as grade, satisfaction with major, amount of clinical practice, period of clinical practice, place of clinical practice, and the most interesting are during clinical practice. When evaluating curriculum relevancy, the following were ranked on a 5-point Likert scale, where 5 = very useful, 4 = comparatively useful, 3 = normal, 2 = comparatively unuseful, 1 = very unuseful: difference in requirements in the field of clinical practice, reason for this difference, and question about the utility of each curriculum. On this scale, higher points implied higher relevance. Result: The highest groups of curricula regarding curriculum utility were as follows: operative dentistry (59.6%), pre-clinical practice (55.2%), dental materials and clinical practice (54.4%), and prosthetic dentistry (49.6%). The lowest groups of curricula regarding curriculum utility were as follows: oral physiology (2.0%), oral histology and embryology (1.6%), and oral microbiology (1.2%). These results imply a lack of connection between the curriculum and tasks in clinical practice. Conclusion: Based on the results of the present study, it appears that both theory and practice courses of the clinical curriculum must be conducted systematically, and that there is a need to conduct education for the fundamental curricula, such as oral physiology, oral histology and embryology, and oral microbiology, regarding the relevance of tasks practiced in clinics.

  • This study is for the purpose of studying the validity of the construction of items and grading of the evaluation table at clinical practice used as the method of evaluation when clinical practice of Dept. of Dental Technology. 205 dental technicians in 4 cities were questioned to analyze the relation between items of the evaluation table at clinical practice and its grading. The collected materials were inspected by SAS V8 for Windows. The results are as follows: 1. Making up all the items and grading seem to be appropriate because they had the marks more than midium(more than 3.28). 2. Making up detailed items and grading seem to be trusted because they had the marks more than 3.30. 3.The significance level of the relation between items of the evaluation at clinical practice and its grading by t-inspection is p<0.0001 and so it appears to be meaningful. 4. It proved to be meaningful in result of regression analysis of the influence on the construction of the evaluation at clinical practice and its grading. With this result, further study is needed for the better methods of the evaluation in its adjustment and graduated grading among the items.

  • Objectives : This study aims to investigate the relationship between the self-leadership and stress of students majoring in dental hygiene in clinical practice. This study will be helpful to cope with clinical practice effectively. Methods : Subjects were 221 dental hygiene students from 4 universities in Daegu and Gyeongbuk. Data were abalyzed by independent t-test and multiple regression analysis. Results : Stress-response was 60.36 points in high self-leadership group and 57.20 points in kow self-leadership group. It was statistically significant. Clinical practice-induced stress was made by self-expectation, rehearsal, and self-criticism. Stress was able to be overcome by self-reward and positive mind. Conclusions : It is necessary to take the curriculum into consideration which can improve the self-leadership before the clinical practice or at the early phase of clinical practice in order to ensure that the students majoring in dental hygiene are exposed to less stress arising from clinical practice and better cope with such stress.

Results : 1. The satisfaction level of subjects on their major was the highest as 'generally satisfied (50.6%),' and their satisfaction level of clinical practice was also the highest as 'generally satisfied (32.6%).' 2. The clinical practice stress was 2.76 points on average, and their stress factors were ideal and value (3.18), environmental factor (2.98), role and activity (2,70), the amount of BEPSI (2.55), and interpersonal factor (2.37). And the way how they cope with stress were 3.29 points on average, wishful thinking (3.71), social support (3.36), problem-oriented (3.13), and emotion-oriented (2.95). 3. The clinical practice stress according to clinical training institutions showed significant differences: university dental hospitals and general hospitals (2.83), dental clinics (2.65), and dental hospitals (2.63). 4. The clinical practice stress showed a negative correlation between the satisfaction level of major and the satisfaction level of clinical practice (p<0.01), and the more satisfaction they had in their major and clinical practice, the less stress during the clinical practice. 5. In the correlation between each subordinate factor of the stress in clinical practice and how to cope with it, interpersonal factor and emotion-oriented factor, the amount of BEPSI and wishful thinking showed a positive correlation (p<0.05). Conclusions : In this study, it is necessary to develop clinical practice program that is to increase satisfaction and provide motivation in order to reduce the stress during clinical training.

Results : Family support according to general characteristics showed a significant difference by economic status(p<0.001), satisfaction of major(p<0.01), and interpersonal relationship(p<0.05). Satisfaction degree on clinical practice according to general characteristics showed a significant difference by satisfaction of major(p<0.05) and interpersonal relationship(p<0.05). The relationship between generally perceived family support correlated with the degree of satisfaction in clinical practice(r=.154, p<0.05). Conclusions : It was found that a higher degree of satisfaction in clinical practice depends on a higher degree of family support. Therefore it is required to program development to improve satisfaction level of clinical practice by family support.

  • The purpose of this study was to serve as a basis for better student practice in dental hygiene and for determining educational direction for dental hygiene clinical education by examining what students and clinical-practice instructors thought on clinical practice and what factors gave an impact to clinical education. For attaining the purpose, an investigation was made of 449 third-grade students in the department of dental hygiene at seven educational institutes in Seoul and Kyoung-gi province. 246 instructors in charge of the clinical practice of the students at dental hospital or clinics were also examined. The findings of this study were as follows: 1. The instructors and students had different opinions on the number of trainees, training time, beginning of training, and assessment(p<0.05). The instructors thought that a trainee was appropriate for an instructor(59.8%), and that training time was not sufficient(30.8%). They considered it proper for students to start practice during the summer vacation of second year(21.5%), and responded that assessment should be done by the dentist, dental hygienist or professor in charge(44.7%). However, the students had an idea that an instructor should take charge of 2 or 3 trainees(47.4%), and that there was a lot of training time(55.7%). They considered it appropriate to start practice in the first term of second grade(l9A%), and thought the assessment should be made by the dentist and dental hygienist in charge(44.8%). 2. The students' satisfaction was clinical practice was affected(p<0.05) by their own selection of training institutes(28.1%), the absence of trainee from other colleges(29.4%), ample practice time(28.3%), implementation of student assessment once a day(45.3%), diverse practice opportunities (45.5%), and easy traffic to the training institute(32.9%). 3. The achivement of clinical practice was influenced by practice opportunities, the degree of faithful treatment performance, the frequency of student assessment, the number of trainees, traffic to training institutes, assistance in understanding theoretical knowledge of clinical practice, and assessment methods(p<0.05).
