Filtration studies, using simulated test nanoparticles or diesel nanoparticles, have been performed about Inconel foam filters for DPF combined with electrostatic precipitation. The simulated test particles were synthesized by laser ablation in the nitrogen atmosphere at the standard condition. The diesel particles were exhausted from the diesel engine driven on the condition of idle or load mode. Filtration efficiency of the metal foam filter is very low because most of particles are penetrated through the large pores of filter. However, the efficiency was considerably improved by applying the electric field to the filter and/or charging the nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the pressure drop of filter hardly increased because the filter-pores were not clogged by deposited particles and kept open.

In this experimental study, the effects of clean alternative fuels compatible with diesel combustion on nano-sized particle emission characteristics were investigated in a 0.5L auto-ignited single-cylinder engine with a compression ratio of 15. Because the number concentration of nano-sized particles emitted by automotive engine, that are suspected of being hazardous to human health and environment, might increase with engine fuel considerably and recently attracted attention. So a ultra-low sulfur diesel(ULSD), BD100(100% bio-diesel) and Di-Methyl Ether(DME) fuels used for this study. And, as a particle measuring instrument, a fast-response particle spectrometer (DMS 500) with heated sample line was used for continuous measurement of the particle size and number distribution in the size range of 5 to 1000nm (aerodynamic diameter). As this research results, we found that this measurements involving the large proportion of particles under size order of 300nm and number concentration of $4{\times}10^9$ allowed a single or bi-modal distribution to be found at different engine load conditions. Also the influence of oxygen content in fuel and the catalyst could be a dominant factor in controlling the nano-sized particle emissions in auto-ignited engine.

An experimental study was carried out to investigate the emission characteristics for various alternative fuels in a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine. The conventional diesel fuel, neat GTL (Gas to Liquid), blends of diesel and biodiesel(BD20), and blends of GTL and biodiesel(G+BD20 and G+BD40) were applied, and their emission characteristics were compared at various steady-state engine operating conditions. A noticeable reduction of exhaust emissions compared to conventional diesel fuel, except for NOx emission, was observed for G+BD40, where there is a maximum 30% averaged reduction for gaseous emissions (THC and CO) and 70% for PM mass concentrations. When comparing PM size distributions for biodiesel blended fuels, the PM number concentration in accumulation mode, where the diameter of PM is greater than 50 nm, decreased due to additional oxygen content in the biodiesel fuel; in nucleation mode, where the diameter of PM is less than 50nm, there was a slight increase or decrease in the PM number concentration depending on the amount of oxygen available in the combustion chamber.
GTL (Gas To Liquid) has the potential to be used in diesel engines as a clean alternative fuel due to advantages in emission reduction, particularly soot reduction. Since the physical properties of GTL fuel differ from those of diesel fuel to some extent, studying how this difference in characteristics of GTL and diesel fuels affects spray and combustion in diesel engines is important. In this study, visual investigation of sprays and flames from GTL and diesel fuels in a vessel simulating diesel combustion was implemented. The effects of various parameters and conditions, such as injection pressure, chamber temperature and pilot injection on liquid-phase fuel length and auto-ignition delay were investigated. It was determined that GTL has a somewhat shorter liquid-phase fuel length, which explains why there is less contact between the fuel liquid-phase and flame for GTL fuel compared to diesel fuel.
This paper This paper presents effect of nozzle hole number on spray characteristics and engine performance. Experiments were conducted to measure spray penetration and SMD distributions using a spray visualization system and PDPA (phase Doppler particle analyzer) system. In addition, engine performance and emission characteristics were measured using a single cylinder engine and emssion measurement systems. Results showed that 8-hole-injector exhibits improved spray performances. Furthermore, soot emission was decreased with 8-hole-injector, compared to that of 6-hole-injector.
Recently, exhaust gas regulation has been gradually strengthened due to depletion of fossil fuels and environmental problem like a global warming. Due to this global problem, the demand for eco-friendly vehicle development is rapidly increasing. A clean diesel vehicle is considered as a realistic alternative. The common-rail fuel injection system, which is the key technology of the clean diesel vehicle, has adopted injection strategies such as high pressure injection, multiple injection for better atomization of the fuel. In addition, the emission regulations in the future is expected to be more stringent, which a conventional engine is difficult to deal with. One of the way for actively proceeding is the study of alternative fuels. Among them, the bio-diesel has been attracted as an alternative of diesel. So, in this study, spray characteristics of bio-diesel was analyzed in the common-rail fuel injection system with three injectors driven by different operating mechanism.

Regulations for the exhaust gas of diesel vehicles are being strengthened every year. Recently, diesel emission regulations for HC, CO, NOx, and particulate matter (PM) have been subject to very strict standards. In the future, the regulation of PM is expected to become stricter. Accordingly, diesel particulate filters (DPFs) have been applied to most diesel vehicles for PM reduction. With increasing engine mileage, ash and soot from the engine exhaust gas accumulate inside the DPF. This accumulation can damage the DPF or degrade engine performance. Therefore, efficient cleaning of the DPF is critical for the maintenance of the engine. If the DPF is well managed through regular cleaning, it can improve the power and fuel economy of the engine and reduce maintenance costs. Therefore, this study was performed to develop a high-efficiency cleaning method for DPFs and an apparatus that can more effectively clean out the accumulated ash and soot.

Due to increasing need for better emission characteristics and lower fuel consumption rate in automotive engines, alternative fuels are drawing more attentions recently. The GTL (gas to liquid) is the one of most favored candidates. In this study, emission characteristics are compared between diesel and GTL fuel in commercial 2.0 liter diesel engine and vehicle with CRDi(Common Rail Direct injection) system. The effects of injection timings on emission and fuel consumption rate are compared at various engine speeds and loads. Noticeable reduction in HC, CO and PM emissions are observed due to higher cetane number and low sulfur and aromatic contents in GTL. On the trade-off curve of NOx and PM(Particulate matter) GTL showed much more benefits than diesel, where about 30% of PM mass decreased at the same operating conditions. On CVS 75 mode test in vehicle, GTL showed an excellent emission enhancement, in which 50% of HC, 21% of PM, and 12% of NOx engine-out emissions are decreased compared to ULSD(Ultra low sulfur diesel) fuel.

An experimental research with 2.0 liter 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine was carried out to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics for various alternative fuels. The conventional diesel fuel, neat GTL, blends of 80% of GTL and 20% of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil are utilized without any modification of engine hardware and ECU data. For GTL and blends of GTL/biodiesel fuel, the ignition delay decreased at the same operating conditions, and overall combustion duration increased slightly. Also, the peak cylinder pressure increased for blends of GTL/biodiesel compared to diesel and GTL fuel. THC and CO emissions with blends of GTL/biodiesel compared to other fuels decreased for the low and middle load conditions. But NOx emission increased due to oxygen content in biodiesel. The number concentrations of PM are higher for blends of GTL/biodiesel than other test fuels in the nucleation mode, while it had an opposite tendency in the accumulation mode, which implies more reduction of PM for blends of GTL/biodiesel on the base of mass concentration.
Recently, R&D demand for environmental friendly vehicle has rapidly increased due to its global environmental issues such as global warming, energy and economic crisis. Under this situation, the most realistic alternative way for environmental friendly vehicle is a clean diesel vehicle. The common-rail fuel injection system, as key technology of clean diesel vehicle, consists of a high pressure pump, common-rail, high pressure fuel line and electronic control injector. In common-rail high-pressure fuel injection system, high pressure wave of injection system and geometry of injector elements have a major effects on high-pressure fuel spray. Therefore, in this study, the numerical model was developed for analysis about the common-rail fuel pressure pulsation by using AMESim code. We could secure stability of common-rail high-pressure fuel injection system through optimal design of fuel line.
