The objective of this research was to develop growth media for artificial ground by blending calcined clay and coconut peat. To achieve this, aggregates of clay particles were mixed with disel oil and heated to high temperature(1150~120$0^{\circ}C$) to expand clays. The particle sizes of expanded clay were controlled to 2~5mm in diameter. Then expanded clayes were mixed with coconut peat and changes of soil physicochemical properties and their effect on plant growth of Hedera L. were determined. The infiltration rate of calcined clay was very high, but the water holding capacity, the cation exchange capacity(CEC), and the nutrient contents were low. The characteritics of coconut peat was vice verse to calcined clay. This indicates that the mixture of calcined clay and coconut peat have the better characteristics than each material. As compared to mineral soil, the infiltration rate, the water holding capacity, the CEC and the nutrient contents increased, but bulk density decreased to about 1/4. And, Hedera L. grown in the mixture of calcined clay and coconut peat(6:4, v/v) had higher plant height, longer leaf length, more total number of leaves per plant and fresh weight than that grown in mineral soil, but statistical differences were not observed between two treatments.
In Korea, where hydrothermal alteration zones are widely distributed, clay veins formed by hydrothermal alteration processes on natural slopes or artificial slopes can play an important role in the slope stability. When the surface water infiltrates the ground where the clay vein exists, the pore water pressure in the ground can be locally increased due to impermeable properties of clay minerals. Infiltration of the surface water induces the increase in the pore water pressure, which can cause erosion of the fine clay particles. The eroded clay particles flow and deposit in an area where the flow velocity is slowed down. Where clay minerals are deposited, ground water can leak due to an increase in local pore pressures, which can cause slope failure. In this paper, studies related to hydrothermal clay vein and landslide are introduced.

Estuary of Nakdong river area is composed of unconsolidated sediments including clays that are deposited varying from 40 to 70m thick. The purpose of research is the knowledge of the correlation between engineering properties and mineralogy of clay sediments. The correlation analysis carry out multiple regression that have independent variables (Engineering properties) and dependent variables (mineralogy, geochemistry). Engineering properties of clay are correlated with the mineral compositions and geochemical characteristics. The result of the analysis is Wn=-0.6 Feldspar + 1.1 pH + 0.01 TDS + 27.5, Ip=0.36 Clay + 1.44 Vermiculite + 0.94 clay mineral-22.88, P$_{L}$=0.005 TDS - 0.31 Feldspar + 22.43, e$_{o}$=0.02 Vermiculite - 0.01 Quartz + TDS + 0.93, E$_{50}$=1.94 Vermiculite-0.96 Kaolinite -0.53 silt + 49.64, SR=-0.25 Kaolinite + 1.5 pH - 2.3 Conductivity, CC = 0.03 pH + TDS - 0.2, LL = 0.5 Clay + 1.3 Vermiculite + 5.5 Conductivity + 0.8 Caly mineral-20.4.4.4.4
Mineral composition and chemical properties of Hwangto (reddish residual soil) that used in feeding of cattles at Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, Korea were examined according to particle size separation such as gravel, sand, silt, coarse clay and fine clay. Mineral composition analyses reveal that gravel and sand are mainly composed of quartz and feldspars and that kaolin mineral and illite are dominant in clay and silt. Iron oxides are mainly included in fine clay. According to chemical analyses of major elements, Al, Fe and $H_2O$ contents are increased with decreasing of particle size. This trend well agrees with increase of clay minerals in smaller particles, Chemical analyses of trace elements indicate that contents of Zn, Rb, Sr, Ba, Pb significantly differ with particle sizes. Ba and Sr are included in feldspars since these elements are abundant in sand containing abundant feldspars. Pb and Sm are abundant in sample before particle size separation, but the contents are significantly decreased after separation. Therefore, most of these elements appear to be existed as removable phase. Nb, La, Th, Ce are more abundant in silt. The contents of all the other trace elements tend to be increased in smaller particles containing more clay minerals. The contents of changeable cations and teachable elements in acid and alkali solutions are high in clay samples. All the above results indicate that using the portion of smaller particle of Hwangto for livestock feed rather than bulk Hwangto can improve cation exchangeable capacity, ion leaching capacity and sorption properties.
Clay-based membranes with submicron pore size were successfully prepared by a simple pressing process using low-cost starting materials(e.g., kaolin (K), bentonite (B), talc (T), and sodium borate). The green bodies were sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in air. The effect of clay-mineral composition on the flexural strength of clay-based membranes was investigated. The porosity of the clay-based membranes could be controlled within the range of 34 - 42% by adjusting the starting composition. The flexural strength of the low-cost membranes depended on both the porosity and the ${\alpha}$-quartz content. In turn, the porosity and ${\alpha}$-quartz content were affected by the (B+T) /(K+B+T) ratio. The plot of strength relative to this ratio, showed a maximum when the ratio was 0.4. The typical flexural strength of these clay-based membranes (with ratio 0.4) was 28 MPa at 34% porosity.
Superabsorbent hydrogel (SAH) is a lightly crosslinked hydrophilic functional polymer material comprising a flexible chain structure, which can absorb and retain high amounts of water or aqueous fluids even under high pressure. Therefore, it is important to improve their characteristics such as absorption performance, residual monomer content, and water permeability. SAH nanocomposites were prepared using clay mineral as an inorganic filler and the influence of post-treatment processes such as quenching and aging process on their properties was studied. In addition, surface-crosslinking process was applied to improve the absorption performance associated with mechanical properties and water permeability. The structure of the SAH was characterized using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and scanning electron microscopy.

Clay mineral content of weathered zone is a key parameter for landslide studies. Electrical resistivity tomography is usually performed to delineate the geometry of complex landslides and to identify the sliding surface. In clay-bearing weathered zone, parallel resistivity Archie equation is employed to investigate the effect of conductivity added (resistivity reduced) by clay minerals of kaolinite and montmorillonite, which is dependent on their specific surface area and cation exchange capacities (CEC). A decrease of overall resistivity and apparent formation factor is observed with increasing pore-water resistivity, significantly in montmorillonite. Formation factor is found decreased with increasing porosity and decreasing cementation factor. Parallel Archie equation was applied to the electrical resistivity data from the test area (Sinjindo-ri, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea) which experienced land creeping in the year of 2014. A panel test with varying clay-mineral contents provides the best fit section when the theoretical section constructed with the assumed contents approaches the field section, from which the clay-mineral content of the weathered zone is estimated to be approximately 10%. Resistivity interpretation schemes including the clay mineral contents for land creeping studies explored in this paper can be challenged more when porosity, saturation, and pore-water resistivity are provided and they are included in the numerical resistivity modeling.
The present study investigated the physical changes and reaction products with setting time after mixing of various mineral admixtures such as lime, hydrated lime, gypsum, kaolin, zeolite and diatomaceous earth with four types of cement (portland cement, slag cement, quick lime, hydrated lime) and clay rich sediments in soft foundation. As results, slag cement showed the greater compressive strength than normal portland cement. The mixing experiments with various mineral admixtures and slag cement resulted that gypsum showed the greatest compressive strength. Additionally, we conducted mixing experiments with various mixing ratios of gypsum and slag cement. The experiments showed that the mixing ratio of $30\%$ gypum and $70\%$ slag cement has the greatest compressive strength. Ettringite was produced as a reaction Product. This fact indicates that gypsum effectively promotes hydration reaction and contributed to the greater compressive strength. These experimental results can be used as fundamental data for the stabilization of soft clay foundation.

An analysis of the components of clay mineral before and after coloration (XRF) showed that the elements involved in coloration are Fe, Cr, and Ni. Fe accounts for 65% of coloring components on dyed fabric; in addition, Cr and Ni also affect coloring. The optimal coloration condition was to repeat the process of immersing the cotton fabric in $80^{\circ}C$ slurry of 8g of clay mineral to 1g cotton for 60 minutes, dry it for 24 hours and rinse three times. Especially, as the repetition of coloration increased, the $(K/S)_{440}$ value of sample A increased from 1.0 to 2.5, and sample B increased from 1.0 to 1.6. The effect of the repeated process on coloration was significant; consequently, the rinsing and drying process were important to decrease the coloration level. It also showed excellent results in regard to color fastness to washing, light, rubbing, perspiration, and antibiotic effect.
We investigated the effect of the clay mineral fortified with complex trace elements by specific fermentation microbes on growth performance and a quality of pork in this study. For the declared experimental animal, 80 heads of crossbred with Large White and Yorkshire were randomly splitted into a control group and a test group. Each group were assigned with 4 replicates and 10 heads of each replicate. When 0.3% of the fermentation product of the clay mineral (FCM) was added into feed stuff and fed for 9 weeks of experimental feeding period, the results of the feed intake, weight gains, pH of carcass, lightness of meat color, and brightness of the muscle semimembranosus were similar to those of the control group. However, dressing percentage, reddishness of carcass, and water holding capacity were improved, respectively, as much as 2.7%, 12%, and 10%, and reduced by 6% in cooking loss. In order to investigate the immune modulatory effect of fermented clay mineral, pheripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated and Immune modulatory parameters were measured. The proliferation activity of PBMC from pigs fed the fermented clay mineral were significantly increased compared to control group pigs, and also those results were more clearly observed as activated with lipopolysaccharide and concanavaline A. The secretion of TNF-${\alpha}$ of the FCM group pigs showed an increasing tendency. Therefore it was suggested that the feeding of FCM which was high in cation metathesis and the value of infrared ray, activated the immune responses, and thus the production of the environment-friendly high quality pork without the use of antibiotics would be possible.
