Land-use or land-cover classification of satellite images is one of the important tasks in remote sensing application and many researchers have been tried to enhance classification accuracy. Previous studies show that the classification technique based on wavelet transform is more effective than that of traditional techniques based on original pixel values, especially in complicated imagery. Various wavelets can be used in wavelet transform. Wavelets are used as basis functions in representing other functions, like sinusoidal function in Fourier analysis. In these days, some basis functions such as Haar, Daubechies, Coiflets and Symlets are mainly used in 2D image processing. Selecting adequate wavelet is very important because different results could be obtained according to the type of basis function in classification. However, it is not easy to choose the basis function which is effective to improve classification accuracy. In this study, we computed the wavelet coefficients of satellite image using 10 different basis functions, and then classified test image. After evaluating classification results, we tried to ascertain which basis function is the most effective for image classification. We also tried to see if the optimum basis function is decided by energy parameter before classifying the image using all basis function. The energy parameter of signal is the sum of the squares of wavelet coefficients. The energy parameter is calculated by sub-bands after the wavelet decomposition and the energy parameter of each sub-band can be a favorable feature of texture. The decision of optimum basis function using energy parameter in the wavelet based image classification is expected to be helpful for saving time and improving classification accuracy effectively.
Recently, support vector machine has been widely used in various application fields due to its superiority of classification performance comparing with decision tree and neural network. Since support vector machine is basically designed for the binary classification problem, output coding method to analyze the classification result of multiclass binary classifier is used for the application of support vector machine into the multiclass problem. However, previous feature selection method for output coding based support vector machine found the features to improve the overall classification accuracy instead of improving each classification accuracy of each classifier. In this paper, we propose the novel feature selection method to find the features for maximizing the classification accuracy of each binary classifier in output coding based support vector machine. Experimental result showed that proposed method significantly improved the classification accuracy comparing with previous feature selection method.

The classification of hyperspectral imagery (HSI) is essential in the surface of earth observation. Due to the continuous large number of bands, HSI data provide rich information about the object of study; however, it suffers from the curse of dimensionality. Dimensionality reduction is an essential aspect of Machine learning classification. The algorithms based on feature extraction can overcome the data dimensionality issue, thereby allowing the classifiers to utilize comprehensive models to reduce computational costs. This paper assesses and compares two HSI classification techniques. The first is based on the Joint Spatial-Spectral Stacked Autoencoder (JSSSA) method, the second is based on a shallow Artificial Neural Network (SNN), and the third is used the SVM model. The performance of the JSSSA technique is better than the SNN classification technique based on the overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient values. We observed that the JSSSA based method surpasses the SNN technique with an overall accuracy of 96.13% and Kappa coefficient value of 0.95. SNN also achieved a good accuracy of 92.40% and a Kappa coefficient value of 0.90, and SVM achieved an accuracy of 82.87%. The current study suggests that both JSSSA and SNN based techniques prove to be efficient methods for hyperspectral classification of snow features. This work classified the labeled/ground-truth datasets of snow in multiple classes. The labeled/ground-truth data can be valuable for applying deep neural networks such as CNN, hybrid CNN, RNN for glaciology, and snow-related hazard applications.
This study proposes a two-stage hybrid classification model for crop classification using multi-temporal remote sensing images; the model combines feature embedding by using an autoencoder (AE) with a convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier to fully utilize features including informative temporal and spatial signatures. Long short-term memory (LSTM)-based AE (LAE) is fine-tuned using class label information to extract latent features that contain less noise and useful temporal signatures. The CNN classifier is then applied to effectively account for the spatial characteristics of the extracted latent features. A crop classification experiment with multi-temporal unmanned aerial vehicle images is conducted to illustrate the potential application of the proposed hybrid model. The classification performance of the proposed model is compared with various combinations of conventional deep learning models (CNN, LSTM, and convolutional LSTM) and different inputs (original multi-temporal images and features from stacked AE). From the crop classification experiment, the best classification accuracy was achieved by the proposed model that utilized the latent features by fine-tuned LAE as input for the CNN classifier. The latent features that contain useful temporal signatures and are less noisy could increase the class separability between crops with similar spectral signatures, thereby leading to superior classification accuracy. The experimental results demonstrate the importance of effective feature extraction and the potential of the proposed classification model for crop classification using multi-temporal remote sensing images.
We propose a method for analyzing the document structure. This method consists of two processes, segmentation and classification. The segmentation first divides a low resolution image, and then finely splits the original document image using projection profiles. The classification deterimines each segmented region as text, line, table or image. An experiment with 238 documents images shows that the segmentation accuracy is 99.1% and the classification accuracy is 97.3%.
The national accuracy of global land cover (GLC) products is of great importance to ecological and environmental research. However, GLC products that are derived from different satellite sensors, with differing spatial resolutions, classification methods, and classification schemes are certain to show some discrepancies. The goal of this study is to assess the accuracy of four commonly used GLC datasets in South Korea, GLC2000, GlobCover2009, MCD12Q1, and GlobeLand30. First, we compared the area of seven classes between four GLC datasets and a reference dataset. Then, we calculated the accuracy of the four GLC datasets based on an aggregated classification scheme containing seven classes, using overall, producer's and user's accuracies, and kappa coefficient. GlobeLand30 had the highest overall accuracy (77.59%). The overall accuracies of MCD12Q1, GLC2000, and GlobCover2009 were 75.51%, 68.38%, and 57.99%, respectively. These results indicate that GlobeLand30 is the most suitable dataset to support a variety of national scientific endeavors in South Korea.

In this paper, we focused on the problem of evaluating multi-class classification accuracy and simulation of multiple classifier performance metrics. Multi-class classifiers for sentiment analysis involved many challenges, whereas previous research narrowed to the binary classification model since it provides higher accuracy when dealing with text data. Thus, we take inspiration from the non-linear Support Vector Machine to modify the algorithm by embedding dynamic hyperplanes representing multiple class labels. Then we analyzed the performance of multi-class classifiers using macro-accuracy, micro-accuracy and several other metrics to justify the significance of our algorithm enhancement. Furthermore, we hybridized Enhanced Convolution Neural Network (ECNN) with Dynamic Support Vector Machine (DSVM) to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the classifier towards multi-class text data. We performed experiments on three hybrid classifiers, which are ECNN with Binary SVM (ECNN-BSVM), and ECNN with linear Multi-Class SVM (ECNN-MCSVM) and our proposed algorithm (ECNNDSVM). Comparative experiments of hybrid algorithms yielded 85.12 % for single metric accuracy; 86.95 % for multiple metrics on average. As for our modified algorithm of the ECNN-DSVM classifier, we reached 98.29 % micro-accuracy results with an f-score value of 98 % at most. For the future direction of this research, we are aiming for hyperplane optimization analysis.

A Neural network classification of human activity data is presented. The data acquisition system involves a tri-axial accelerometer in wireless sensor network environment. The wireless ad-hoc system has the advantage of small size, convenience for wearability and cost effectiveness. The system can further improve the range of user mobility with the inclusion of ad-hoc environment. The classification is based on the frequencies of the involved activities. The most significant Fast Fourier coefficients, of the acceleration of the body movement, are used for classification of the daily activities like, Rest walk and Run. A supervised learning approach is used. The work presents classification accuracy with the available fast batch training algorithms i.e. Levenberg-Marquardt and Resilient back propagation scheme is used for training and calculation of accuracy.
The RapidEye satellite sensor has various spectral wavelength bands, and it can capture large areas with high temporal resolution. Therefore, it affords advantages in generating various types of thematic maps, including land cover maps. In this study, we applied a supervised classification scheme to generate high-resolution land cover maps using RapidEye images. To improve the classification accuracy, object-based classification was performed by adding brightness, yellowness, and greenness bands by Tasseled Cap Transformation (TCT) and Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) bands. It was experimentally confirmed that the classification results obtained by adding TCT and NDWI bands as input data showed high classification accuracy compared with the land cover map generated using the original RapidEye images.
