When a threaded fastener is tightened, the torque-tension relationship is highly sensitive to two friction components: thread friction and head friction. In this study, we carried out friction experiments and analyses to determine the optimum clamping torque setting for bolt joints. First, we measured the coefficients of thread friction and head friction under the same running conditions of the bolt clamping process for lubricated and non-lubricated bolts. We also measured axial tension through bolt clamping tests using lubricated and non-lubricated bolts attached to a strain gauge. Finally, we compared the experiment and theoretical results.
In vehicle development process, durability test should be carried out in field condition. Nowadays there are many customer live there multiple conditions. It makes change of the car's material. Such change causes to lose a bolt. Diversifications of climatic conditions are also a matter of loosening the bolt. To avoid this problem, to identify the cause of the problem, and the solution should be applied. To avoid problems during the durability development test should be measured by the clamping force. Ultrasonic instruments clamping force without affecting the torque can be measured. This instrument is part of the problem by monitoring the clamping force required to obtain objective data.

Relaxation of high strength bolts was investigated. Block type and splice type specimens were fabricated with different types of bolts and different clamping lengths. Bolts were tightened to the specified torque. Clamping forces were measured through strain gauges installed on the shafts of bolts, while specimens were kept in a constant temperature and humidity. In all cases, ratio of clamping force reduction is less than 10%. Test results of different types of specimens and bolts and different clamping lengths were compared each other by using a simple model, which is suggested in this study for the estimation of bolt relaxation. The suggested model shows reasonably good agreements with test results for all cases. No difference is found between F13T and F10T bolts, but Dacro coated bolts shows higher relaxation than black bolts by approx. 30%. And also the comparison of test results shows that ratios of bolt relaxation become larger as clamping lengths of bolt shorter and the number of faying surfaces greater.
It is very important to connect machinery and maintain it. This is usually done by bolt joint. There are two ways in connecting the bolt joint : the angle method and the torque method. The torque method is a method that let the clamping force maintain. The underhead of the bolt's head and the thread friction are the main influences. This study focuses on how the clamping farce and friction coefficient change under the condition in vibrating the underhead of the bolt's head part. As a result, under vibration condition, we found out that the clamping farce increases, while the friction coefficient decreases.

Military vehicles use run-flat wheels for emergency situations. Run-flat wheels can run required distance in a defined duration with the pressure loss tire. For the application of a run-flat system, wheels are designed in 2 pieces, including an inner rim and outer rim. These rims are assembled using clamping bolts. Clamping bolts determine the durability of military vehicle wheels because fracture of clamping bolts account for most wheel failures. For improving wheel durability, clamping bolt durability must be improved. In this study, wheel test conditions and bolt design were investigated. Existing test standards are not sufficient to conduct endurance tests. Supplementary conditions were investigated. Using these modified test conditions, the durability of wheels including clamping bolts was tested and verified. Results found the durability of wheels improved more than 168%. This study also proposes improvements in the design process of clamping bolts.

In this paper, the effect of bolt clamping force and form accuray of contact surface between mirror and mount on mirror surface was studied. Normally, mirror used in reflecting optical system was assembled with mount by bolts or adhesive. In this case, the tension caused by bolt clamping force or adhesive force may distort the mirror surface. Also, form accuracy error of the contact surface have a negative impact on wrenched mirror surface which assembled by bolts or adhesive. In this study, stress and distorted displacements on mirror surface were analyzed according to the different contact surface form accuracies and bolt clamping forces by using the finite element analysis method.

This paper presents a novel convolutional neural network (CNN)-based approach for predicting bolt clamping force in the early bolt loosening state of bolted structures. The approach entails tightening eight bolts with different clamping forces and generating frequency responses, which are then used to create a similarity map. This map quantifies the magnitude and shape similarity between the frequency responses and the initial model in a fully fastened state. Krylov subspace-based model order reduction is employed to efficiently handle the large amount of frequency response data. The CNN model incorporates a regression output layer to predict the clamping forces of the bolts. Its performance is evaluated by training the network by using various amounts of training data and convolutional layers. The input data for the model are derived from the magnitude and shape similarity map obtained from the frequency responses. The results demonstrate the diagnostic potential and effectiveness of the proposed approach in detecting early bolt loosening. Accurate bolt clamping force predictions in the early loosening state can thus be achieved by utilizing the frequency response data and CNN model. The findings afford valuable insights into the application of CNNs for assessing the integrity of bolted structures.

In this study we proposed a simplified finite element model of anchor bolt system inserted through concrete structures considering clamping forces. The three different finite element types using LS-DYNA are applied for numerical efficiency of the anchor bolt modeling. Combined beam and solid elements are used to reflect the tension state at internal part of anchor bolt due to torques. The clamping forces due to torques are considered by introducing a compression for a nut plane modeled by beam elements. The numerical examples show good agreement with different element types. Parametric studies are focused on the various effects of different element types on the induced axial and shear forces of anchor bolts considering clamping forces.

It has been reported that the length parameter of high strength bolts results in the variance in tensile loads. The required turn of nut for each length is specified in AISC RCSC specification. There is no specific regulation datum about the bolt length in the two national codes and specifications in Korea. Therefore this study focused on evaluating influence of the clamping torque subjected to length parameter of high strength bolts. Two types of high strength bolt specimens were manufactured and tested; High Strength Hexagon bolt specified in ASTM A490 and Torque Shear Bolt in KS B 2819. The length parameter ranged from 60mm(3d) to 140mm(7d). The torque, turn of nut, and the clamping force were analyzed to review whether length parameter affects on the required tensile strength. To evaluate the effects of the length parameter on the torque and turn of nut for the required strength and clamping force, statistical analysis was also carried out.
In the friction-type joints the external applied load is transmitted by frictional force acting on the contact area of the plates fastened by the high strength bolts. This frictional force is proportional to the product of the bolt clamping force and slip coefficient of the faying surface. But the bolt clamping force is dependent on many factors when the turn-of-nut method is used. The preserved thread length and length-to-diameter ratios are one of the major factors governing the bolt clamping force. This paper presents the correct method of high strength bolt tightening through the experiment on the mechanical properties on sets of high strength bolts in accordance with preserved thread length and length-to-diameter ratios.
