  • Ni-based superalloys have exceptional performance in high-temperature strength, corrosion resistance, etc, and it has been widely used in various applications that require corrosion resistance at high-temperature operations. However, the relatively expensive cost of the Ni-based superalloys is one of the major hurdles. The corrosion-resisted alloy(CRA) clad materials can be a cost-effective solution. In this study, finite element analysis of the hot rolling process for manufacturing of the Alloy 625/API X65 steel CRA clad plates is conducted. The stress-strain curves of the two materials are measured in compressive tests for various temperature and strain rate conditions, using the Gleeble tester. Then, strain hardening behavior is modeled following the modified Johnson-Cook model. Finite element analysis of the hot rolled cladding process is performed using this strain rate and temperature dependent hardening model. Finally, the thickness ratio of the CRA and base material is predicted and compared with experimental values.

  • Re-engineering is gaining attention due to severe environmental pollution and economic crisis. Although re-engineering in shipbuilding has been carried out steadily, technological advancements, domestic ship repair and maintenance industries are not as prevalent as shipbuilding industries. In order to solve this problems, laser cladding can significantly aid with technical development. Laser cladding produces an outstanding clad layer with minimal dilution and little porosity. In this study, prior to applying laser cladding to an exhaust valve face, the effects of various parameters that affect the characteristics of the 1 pass clad layer were investigated. When laser power was increased, the clad layer width became broader and the height was decreased. In addition, it was identified that the hardness of the clad layer was inversely proportional to the power, and the entire clad layer was diluted through an EDS chemical composition analysis.

  • A three-point bending test was performed on roll-bonded Mg/Al/STS clad-metal plates under two different testing conditions (Mg layer in tension, or STS in tension) and their mechanical response and fracture behavior were investigated. Bending strength was found to be greater under the condition of Mg layer in tension. Heat treatment at $200^{\circ}C$ increased the bending formability, suggesting the interfacial strength increased at $200^{\circ}C$. Under the condition of Mg in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ fractured in two steps, with the first step associated with the interfacial fracture between Mg and Al, and the second the fracture of the Mg layer. STS/Al layers were found to be bent without complete fracture. Under the condition of STS in tension, the clad heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$ exhibited a very small load drop at the displacement, which is similar to that of the first load drop associated with the interfacial fracture under the condition of Mg in tension. In this case, no interfacial cracks were found and the complete cut-through fracture of clad was observed at low temperature heat treatment conditions, suggesting excellent interfacial strength. When the heat treatment temperature was higher than $300^{\circ}C$, interfacial cracks were observed. The local stress condition and the position of the interface with respect to the surface were found to have a great influence on the fracture behaviors of clad metals.

  • In this study, some considerations have been suggested in developing on-site techniques to evaluate the sensitization of stainless steels. Electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) technique is known to be a candidate tool for field applications since it enables quantitative assessment in reasonable test time, compared to oxalic etching (ditch) technique. The on-site application of the test method imposes additional restrictions on the selection of the test method (for example, minimum surface preparation requirement, insensitivity to testing temperature, etc.). The EPR and etching techniques have been compared in order to sensitization of stainless steel structures. It has been widely reported that the maximum sensitivity in the welded structure of stainless steel is shown at heat-affected zone (HAZ) than weldments with cast structure. In this work, sectioned weldments and external surfaces were investigated to reveal the degree of sensitization by the etching and the results were compared with those of EPR test. The EPR test showed little sensitivity to surface roughness and test temperature.

  • The microstructural characteristics and its related mechanical properties of RPV cladding have been investigated using small punch (SP) tests. SA508 Cl.3 RPV steel plates were overlay cladded with the type ER309L welding consumables by submerged arc welding process. Although the RPV clad material had a small portion of 5 ferrite phase, it still showed the ductile to brittle transition behavior The transition temperature was determined by the SP test and it depended on the content of $\sigma$ phase, specimen size, and determination methods. The fracture appearance of SP specimen was changed from circumferential to radial cracking as test temperature became low, and below the transition temperature region, ER309L cladding usually fractured along the 6 ferrite by the low temperature failure of ferrite phase.

  • The clad samples of five plies of sheets comprising ferritic stainless steel (STS) and aluminum (Al) were prepared by roll-cladding at $350^{\circ}C$. The evolution of strain states and textures during roll-cladding of STS430/AA3003/AA3003/AA3 003/STS430 and STS430/AA3003/STS430/AA3003/STS430 was investigated by measurements of crystallographic textures and by simulations with the finite element method (FEM). Because the deformation mainly occurs in the Al layer during roll-cladding, the present investigation was focused on the Al layers located. The stacking sequence of sheet materials in the clad samples played an important role in the evolution of strain states during roll-cladding.

  • Due to increasing demands for environment-friendly railway system, bronze wires with cadmium, which is a potential environmental hazard, have been no longer permitted as messenger wire for electric railway system. One of materials being considered as the replacements is copper-clad steel conductor(CCSC), which is currently used as contact wire for high speed operation in the Japanese shinkansen. However, there have been few studies for the application as messenger wire by the CCSC. This study deals with requirements and performances of the messenger wire stranded by the CCSC, especially for high speed electric railway. And the tentative evaluation items and methods to be specified as the Korean railway standard(KRS) are proposed.

  • The deformation behavior of stainless steel-clad aluminum sheet metals under uniaxial tension has been investigated. The differences in mechanical properties such as elastic modulus, flow stress and plastic strain ratio, of component layers of the composite sheet gave rise to warping of the tensile specimens. The warping has been analyzed by FEM and the total force and momentum equilibria. The analyzed radii of curvature of the warped specimens were smaller than the measured data possibly due to elastic recovery during unloading. The differences in mechanical properties may also give rise to transverse stresses in the component layers. The transverse stresses have been analyzed on the assumption of isostrain and by the FEM in which the warping has been taken into account. The transverse stresses calculated by the FEM were lower than those by the isostrain hypothesis due to stress relaxation by the warping and turned out to be negligible compared with the longitudinal stresses. Consequently, the flow stresses of the composite sheets follow the rule of mixtures.

  • 3-ply Mg/Al/STS clad-metal was fabricated by the roll bonding process. An interfacial reaction layer was formed at the Mg/Al interface at and above $300^{\circ}C$ whereas no interfacial reaction layer was observed up to $400^{\circ}C$. The effect of the interfacial reaction layer on the mechanical and fracture properties in clad metals after heat treatments were investigated The chemical compositions were analyzed at the Mg/Al interface by an Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). A tension test was performed to examine the interfacial cracking properties. The Mg layer fractured first, causing a sudden drop of the stress and Al/STS layer continued to deform until the final fracture. Periodic cracks and crack propagation was observed at the reaction layer between Mg and Al.
