  • A novel organoclay has been developed with aluminium-pillared clay modified with an amphoteric surfactant, N-Dodecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (DDAPS). This novel organoclay is expected to have phosphorus removal capacity as well as organic and inorganic contaminant removal capacity, due to aluminum inside the clay structure. It also exhibited less surfactant desorption than conventional cation surfactant-based organoclays. Phosphorus in water can be decreased from 0.2 mg/L to 0.0012 mg/L in 27 hours with this organoclay. Also, cadmium could removed from water using this proposed organo-clay. Experiments were performed under various pHs and amphoteric surfactants sorption capability was the highest at pH 5 when more of the amphoteric surfactant head group took on positive charges.

  • Even through hundreds of meters high steep slope is stable, only several ten meters high dull slope could be collapsed. This means that stability of slope is depend on the slope of a surface of discontinuity like faults existing in rock floor. The existence and nonexistence of a discontinuity surface have a very important effect to the stability of a rock floor slope, and examination for geologic peculiarity is one of the most important pant for investigation of stabilities. Accordingly, in the study, we extracted three dimension coordinates of slope with close photogrammetry, and through interpretations of three dimensions' position of fault within rock floor slope, we expect this will be use as a important sauces when evaluate stabilities of rock floor slope.

  • The present study applies wavelet transform for the extraction of various periodicities which are included in TOC and pH time series of water quality and rainfall data. The primary objective of the present study is to detect the relationships between the respective data through the correlation analysis using the approximation components which are decomposed by wavelet transform. The results reveal the approximation components of TOC and pH in the 5th level of wavelet transform can explain more than 99% of the whole energy for the raw data respectively and there are considerably high correlation between the approximation components of the respective data used for the study even through no significant correlation between the raw data has been detected.

  • The rapid urbanization in developing countries has caused trasportation problems that need to be solved. For that reason, the study evaluates the potential of cycling in the densely populated part of Kathmandu valley. Slopes and existing roads have been applied as the input cost rasters for finding the shortest cost routes between stations. By taking the average cycling velocity, time to travel from station to destination were compared with the average commuting time in the public transportation. The result comes out as similar time with the public transportation. Although the cycling seems potential replacement for public transportation commuters, in fact, there are some setbacks needed to be supported by the government to make it reality in future.

  • In this study, I executed civil engineering design and compared it with the existing method in order to analyze the expected effect of civil engineering design by using three dimensional space information and its advantages. Through a series of processes, it is possible to enhance the usability of three-dimensional space information, expected more accurate calculation of earth work and proceed with more reasonable construction in soil conversion and civil engineering work. Also, it enables improvement of productivity by establishing efficient construction plan.

  • When a underground structure is constructed at the site composed of soft soil, the behavior of a underground structure Is much affected by the motion of soft soil. Therefore, the effect of soil-structure interaction is an important consideration in the design of a underground structure such as tunnel at the site composed of soft soil. This paper presents the results of the study on dynamic response of tunnel structures and soil-structure interaction effects. The computer program SASSI was used in seismic analysis of tunnel structures because it is more capable of analyzing dynamic response or structures considering soil-structure interaction. As regards the results, the flexibility of surrounding soil affects dynamic response characteristics of tunnel structures and response of tunnel structures can be amplified.

  • Recently, experimental and theoretical studies about nonlinear behavior of large concrete structures are in progress. The purpose of this study is to describe the nonlinear behavior of a concrete specimen under compression using several plastic models and to choose the best plastic model for later use in numerical analyses of concrete structures. ABAQUS is a general-purpose FEM program and we tested all suitable embedded material models for concrete. To verify the effectiveness of nonlinear analyses, results were compared with uniaxial and triaxial compression test results.

  • Wave breaking and breaking wave-induced hydrodynamics are very important subjects in the field of coastal and ocean hydrodynamics and engineering. In the coastal zone, a submerged breakwater has been increasingly popular, since it is one of nature-matching structures with multi- functions such as (1) wave energy dissipation by wave breaking and friction, (2) oxygen supply to sea by wave breaking and breaking wave, (3) water purification by entrained air bubbles, (4) keeping. good seascape. and (5) good habitat for sea livings. Recently, the breaking wave-induced high frequency pressure over a submerged breakwater is said to have a function of gathering sea livings around the structure, which has encouraged the construction of the submerged breakwater in coastal zone. • To investigate the effect of drainage spacing and smear on the rate of consolidation, a large consolidation chamber and mandrel insertion device were developed. After the occurrence of smear by installation of sand drain, model ground was consolidated in either overconsolidated or normally consolidated state. As smear effect increases and thus drain spacing decreases, total settlement increase in overconsolidated state but has no effect in normally consolidated state. Efficiency of vertical drain decreases and consequently consolidation time increases in all tests as smear effect becomes significant.
