  • The purpose of this study is to present the source contribution of the fine particles ($PM_{2.5}$) in Chungju area using the CMB (chemical mass balance) method throughout the four seasons in Korea. The Chungju's annual average level of $PM_{2.5}$ was $48.2{\mu}g/m^3$, which exceeded two times higher than standard air quality. Among these particles, the soluble ionic compounds represent 54.2% of fine particle mass. Additionally, the OC concentration in Chungju stayed similar to other domestic cities, while the EC concentration decreased significantly compared to other domestic/international cities. The concentration of sulfur represented the highest composition (8%) among the fine particle compounds. According to the CMB results, the general trend of the $PM_{2.5}$ mass contributors was the following: secondary aerosols (50.5%: ammonium sulfate 26.5% and ammonium nitrate 24.0%) > gasoline vehicle (18.3%) > biomass burning (11.0%) > industrial boiler (6.0%) > diesel vehicles (4.4%). The contribution of the secondary aerosols was the main cause than others. This impact is assumed to be emitted from air pollutants of urban cities or neighbor countries such as China.

  • This paper analyzed articles of u-City Construction Law, which has been enacted on 29th of September last year, and evaluated their appropriateness and other laws associated with u-city services for better provision of u-cities and u-city services. The enacted law established the concept of u-city in Korea and provided relating industries with construction procedures, technology developments, and standards. These efforts have substantial implications as the first stepping stone, but also raised several problems. Hence, this paper suggested that the u-City Construction Law should be amended as follows. First, The minimum size of u-cities, that is required by the law, should be decreased. Second, various kinds of incentives should be provided to the u-city project companies. Third, new organizations such as u-City commission and National or Regional Control and Management Center will be necessary. Fourth, technology standards and inter-operability among cities should be provided in the areas of the control and management centers. And Finally, more measures of and focuses on project financing issues should be made.

  • The purpose of this paper is to estimate effects of healthy city policies on reducing social costs. The analyses were dune at the cities, counties, and communities levels in 2009, and covered Seoul Metropolitan Area(SMA). For estimation of reducing social costs, it developed a system dynamics(SD) model that analyzed causal relationships between physical inactivity rates, the number of deaths, medical expenses, and total social costs. Simulation period of SD was from 2009 to 2030. Three alternatives were proposed with combinations of length of bike lanes, number of bus routes, crime rates, self-reported good health status rates, and obesity rates. The total estimated cost of physical inactivities from 2009 to 2030 was 31.9 trillion won from the future forecast without policies. As a result of simulations with three alternatives, there were economic benefit approximately from 119.7 billion won to 1.16 trillion won. This study contributed to better understanding the economic benefits of healthy cities that were associated with design of built environment and physical activity. It also emphasized the importance of healthy cities planning as one of national welfare polices.

  • Today, construction fence screens which were understood simply as structures of separating people from the dangers of construction sites have evolved into landmarks to enhance the images of Cities. Now, construction fence screens should have the function as landmarks stimulating people's sensibility through providing aesthetic values as well as the function of protecting people from the dangers of fields of construction. For this reason, this study tried 1) to show the relationships among these 4 classifications. is 4 realms of Human Beings - Cultural - Ecological - Digital in the expression methods of the construction fence screens of Seoul and 2) to simplify the characteristic elements of construction fence screens by way of extracting with Ecology, Installation Art, Symbolic, Commercial Expression. This study examined whether or not the construction fence screens of Seoul were playing the role as landmarks stimulating people's sensibility with sustainable improvement to the environment of Seoul as public design structures, by investigating some of the construction fence screens of Seoul. Also through analyzing the diversity of expression methods of the construction fence screens of other local governments as well as those of Seoul, we hope that they will be the public structures for enhancing the images of Cities.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the degree of impact from road construction and forest fragmentation after urbanization. And this study was also conducted to compare the urban forest fragmentations of four cities, Taegu, Pohang, Kyungju, and Kumi, in Kyungpook, Korea, with referring the Landsat TM remotely sensed data. Taegu metropolitan city has the largest forest volume of our surveying sites, comparing with three other cities-Kyungju Pohang Kumi city in kyungpook, Korea. The forest has been fragmented during urbanization, the number of forest patch has been increased, therefore, the patch size has been smaller. The forest in Pohang and Kyungju city represented the intermediate aspect between Taegu Metropolitan city and Kumi city, it means forest of the region has been stable condition. Road construction brings to increasing edge habitat area. However, as the core area was decreased, the habitats have been unstable. This result can be a basis on the management of the forest which is the origin of biodiversity. Hereafter, if the research, based on the multi-temporal remote sensing data, is proceeded continuously, the forest fragmentation will be able to be reduced. We will be able to settle urban forest management more practically.
