  • This paper provides validations of the reference stress based J and $C^{*}$ estimations, proposed in Part I, for inner, circumferential surface cracked pipes under internal pressure and global bending against detailed 3-D elastic-plastic and elastic-creep FE results. For this purpose, actual tensile properties of two typical stainless steels (TP304 and TP316) are used for elastic-plastic FE analyses and two realistic creep laws are used for elastic-creep FE analyses. For a total of twenty cases considered in this paper, agreements between the proposed reference stress based J and $C^{*}$ estimations and the FE results are excellent. More important aspect of the proposed estimations is that they can be used to estimate J and $C^{*}$ not only at the deepest point of the surface crack but also at an arbitrary point along the crack front.front.

  • The welding pressure in extru bending process is affected by the shape of welding chamber of porthole die. It is very important to increase the welding pressure when the tube should be extruded particulary from four billets of the materials. The high circumferential stress of the tube can make the welding pressure increase during the extru-bending. In order to increase the circumferential stress, it is necessary to make the billets pass through the narrow gap between the conical die and the conical plug. This paper describes the welding pressure by the experiments and the analysis with the two types of the chamber. One of them is the chamber between the flat die and straight mandrel, and the other one is the chamber between the conical die and conical plug. The results of the experiments and the analysis shows that the conical chamber makes the welding pressure increase by the effect of the reducing diameter of tube and the welding pressure by the conical dic and plug is stronger than the welding pressure by the flat die and straight mandrel.

  • To date, a number of stress intensity factor (SIF) solutions have been proposed for the cylindrical structure with circumferential through-wall cracks. However, each solution has a different format as well as applicable range. It is also known that there is a significant difference in predicted SIF values depending on the shape of the structure and the size of the crack. In this study, the applicability of various SIF solutions was analyzed by comparing the finite element analysis results for the case where a tensile load is applied to the cylindrical structure with circumferential through-wall crack. It is found that the calculated SIF gradually decreases and converges to a certain value with increasing length-to-radius ratio. Therefore, an appropriate length-to-radius ratio should be set in consideration of the dimensions of the actual cylindrical structure. For piping with sufficiently long cylinder, the ASME solution is found to be the most appropriate, and for a short cylinder, the API solution should be applied. On the other hand, the WEC solution requires careful attention to its application.

  • Non-linear anisotropic materials were used to simulate the effects of tensile stress in 3D finite element analysis (FEA). FEA was used to calculate the effects of far and near-side pit depth and tensile stress on magnetic flux leakage (MFL) signals. The axial and radial MFL signals were depended on far and near-side double circular pit depth and on the stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was not depended on them. The axial and radial MFL signals increased with greater pit depth and applied stress, but the circumferential MFL signal was scarcely changed.

  • Risidual stress of cylindrical glass rods are measured by photoelasticity to study the variation of stresses with respect to heat treatment temperatures. In order to measure the stresses accurately, fringe sharpening and multiplication techniques are applied to the determination of photoelastic fringe orders. Filon's separationmethod is used to resolve circumferential and redial stress ocmponents from isochromatic fringes which are the same as in-plane maximum shearing stresses. According to the photoelastic measurements, residual stress is increased as the heat treatment temperature of the rods is raised from $560^{\circ}C$ to $650^{\circ}C$ All the circumferential stress components are changed from tensile stresses to compressive ones at approximate $R_m$/$R_o$ = 0.6, where $R_o$/ is outer radius and $R_m$any measured radius. This analysis shows that residual stresses of the glass rods approach zero if the rods are heat-treated near the strain point.

  • To find out an adequate failure criterion in two-dimensional linear elastic crack problems, finite element programs, SED, which determine stress intensity factors $K_I, K_{II}$, crack angle and peak load by the minimum strain energy density failure criterion were developed. In this program, the conventional quadratic isoparametric elements were used in all regions except the crack tip zone where triangular singular elements with 6 nodes were used. The results of SED were compared with the results of those which followed by the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and those by the maximum energy release rate criteria and those by Jenq and Shah`s experiments of the same geometry and material properties. The maximum energy release rate criteria were better close to those of the Jenq and Shah`s experiments than the maximum circumferential tensile stress criteria and the minimum strain energy density criteria.

  • A new method to estimate the elastic-plastic J-integral and the crack tip opening displacement (COD) for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under tension and under bending is proposed for Leak-Before-Break (LBB) analysis. Being based on the reference stress method with further modifications, the proposed method is simple to use and easy to be generalised in practice. Comparison of the CODs, predicted using the proposed method with published pipe test data show overall excellent agreement.

  • To predict the direction of the fatigue crack initiated from a hole under various types of biaxial fatigue loads with different phase difference and biaxiality, fatigue parameters were investigated. Axial and torsional biaxial fatigue loads were selected with the respective combination of five different phase differences of 0, 45, 90, 145 and 180 degrees and five biaxialities of 0, $1/{\sqrt{3}}$, 1, ${\sqrt{3}}$, ${\infty}$. Directions of the fatigue crack initiation around the hole were found to approach to the circumferential direction of the specimen with increment of the phase difference for fatigue tests with phase differences less than $90^{\circ}$. Whereas directions for tests with phase differences greater than $90^{\circ}$ went away from the circumferential direction and those were symmetric to the directions for tests with phase difference less than $90^{\circ}$. With increase of biaxilities, the fatigue crack initiated more apart from the circumferential direction of the specimen. These crack initiation direction were predicted using maximum tangential stress range and maximum shear stress range obtained at far-field and around the hole. Comparing these two stress parameters, The crack initiation direction can be successfully explained by using the direction of the maximum tangential stress range obtained around the hole and at far-field.

  • This paper provides the fully plastic J solutions for circumferential cracked pipes with inner, semi- elliptical surface cracks, subject to internal pressure and global bending. Solutions are given in the form of two different approaches, the GEF/EPRl approach and the reference stress approach. For the GE/EPRl approach, the plastic influence functions for fully plastic J are tabulated based on extensive 3-D FE calculations using the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials, covering a wide range of pipe and crack geometries. The developed GEf/EPRl-type fully plastic J estimation equations are then re-formulated using the concept of the reference stress approach for wider applications. Based on the FE results, optimized reference load solutions for the definition of the reference stress are found for internal pressure and for global bending. Advantages of the reference stress based approach over the GE/EPRl-type approach are fully discussed. Validation of the proposed reference stress based J estimation equations will be given in Part II, based on 3-D elastic-plastic or elastic creep FE results using typical tensile properties of stainless steels and generalized creep- deformation behaviours.
