  • Sheath circulating current is increased in the change of sheath mutual impedance which is caused by unbalanced cable system, and different section length between joint boxes. If excessive current flows in sheath, sheath loss which is reduced the transmission capacity is produced. Recently, excessive sheath circulating current was partially measured in underground cable systems of KEPCO. Accordingly, actual schemes to reduce excessive sheath circulating current are urgently required for installed cable system as well as newly-installing cable systems. This paper describes the relation analysis of sheath circulating current and burying types. And also, various schemes to reduce excessive circulating current using EMTP/ATPDraw and applicable schemes are proposed through a detailed analysis regarding cable systems by considering various electrical and environmental factors. It is evaluated that the proposed reduction schemes can be effectively applied to reduce the excessive sheath circulating current with the minimized electrical problems. And reduction effect is Proved with sheath circulating current reduction equipment.

  • A circulating current is a major problem caused by directly connecting voltage-source inverters (VSIs) in parallel. This circulating current occurs as a zero-sequence current between the inverters by specific switch states. Several studies have presented alternatives using hardware and software methods. When coupled inductors (CIs) are employed for the high-frequency circulating current, a controller is required to prevent the low-frequency circulating current from saturating the CIs. In this study, the zero-sequence circulating current and its alternatives are investigated using hardware and mathematical description. A high-performance circulating current controller is proposed by applying a repetitive controller to the zero-sequence current control loop. The proposed controller can effectively minimize the low-frequency circulating current without any data sharing between the inverters in unfavorable conditions. It can also be applicable to the modular configuration of parallel three-phase VSIs. Experimental results verify the performance of the proposed controller.

  • The circulating current control within the phase legs is one of the main control objectives in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) under different operating conditions. This paper proposes a control strategy of circulating currents in the MMC under unbalanced voltage by using a proportional-resonant (PR) controller. Under the unbalanced voltage, the circulating currents in the MMC consists of three components such as positive-sequence, negative-sequence, and zero-sequence circulating currents. With the PR controller, all components of the circulating current will be directly controlled in the stationary reference frame without decomposing into positive- and negative-sequence components. Thus, the ripples in the circulating currents and the DC current are suppressed under the unbalanced voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulation results based on PSCAD/EMTDC simulation program.

  • Sheath circulating current results from the change of sheath mutual impedance which is caused by unbalanced cable system, and different section length between joint boxes. If circulating over current flows in sheath, it produces much sheath loss which reduces the transmission capacity. And also such large sheath current influences severely on the operator. Recently, large sheath circulating current was partially measured in underground cable system of KEPCO. Accordingly, actual schemes to reduce sheath circulating over current is urgently required for installed cable system as well as newly-constructing cable system. This paper describes the analysis of sheath circulating current and various schemes to reduce the large circulating current in case of operating cable system using EMTP/ATPDraw. And also, possible schemes are proposed through a detailed analysis regarding cable systems by considering various electrical and environmental factors. It is evaluated that the proposed reduction schemes can be effectively applied to reduce the large sheath circulating over current with the minimized electrical problems.

  • In this paper, the coupled inductor with three branches in two interleaved converter are analyzed to effectively suppress the high frequency circulating current since the circulating current controller cannot mitigate the high frequency circulating current. As a result, the novel averaged model including the coupled inductor with zero sequence components is developed for reducing the low and high frequency circulating current simultaneously.

  • It is common to install multiple lines in the same route. Recently, excessive sheath circulating current was partially measured in underground cable systems of KEPCO. Especially, the installation type, unbalance section length between joint boxes and zero sequence current by distribution cable have an effect on the rising of sheath circulating current in the underground transmission system. If excessive current flows in sheath, sheath loss which is reduced the transmission capacity is produced. This paper describes the relation analysis of sheath circulating current and burying types. And also, a detailed analysis on rising cause and characteristic of sheath circulating current by considering various unbalanced conditions presents using analysis and measurement regarding cable systems which have the problem of excessive sheath circulation current.

  • This paper proposes an estimation method for a circulating current of a Y-${\Delta}$ Transformer. The delta winding current can be decomposed into the two components i.e. a non-circulating component and a circulating component. The former can be estimated using the line currents. However, the latter can not be estimated directly using the line currents. A first order differential equation for the circulating current is derived by applying the Kirchhoff's voltage law on the loop of the delta side. The circulating current can be estimated by the solving the differential equation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is investigated under various conditions including magnetic inrush and over-excitation. The algorithm can estimate the circulating current very accurately even under magnetic inrush and over-excitation.

  • Parallel three-phase voltage source inverters in a direct connection configuration are widely used to increase system power ratings. A zero-sequence circulating current can be generated according to the switching method; however, the zero-sequence circulating current not only distorts current, but also reduces the system reliability and efficiency. In this paper, a model predictive control scheme is proposed for parallel inverters to drive an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor with zero-sequence circulating current suppression. The voltage vector of the parallel inverters is derived to predict and control the torque and stator flux components. In addition, the zero-sequence circulating current is suppressed by designing the cost function without an additional current sensor and high-impedance inductor. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the proposed control scheme.

  • This paper presents a study of circulating current of modular multi-level converter (MMC) based a high voltage direct current (HVDC) system under unbalanced grid conditions. Due to the connection of a dependent DC source in each phase, the MMC system inherently generates the power ripple of double-line-frequency components in the AC-side and as a result, the additional sinusoidal current named circulating current flows through the each arm. Reliability improvement of HVDC system under an unbalanced grid condition is one of the important criteria. Generally, the modeling of the circulating current is based on the power relation between DC-side and AC-side. However, the method is not perfectly matched in the MMC system due to the difference of the structural characteristic. In this paper, improved modeling method of circulating current is proposed, which is based on the inner arm power. The proposed method is verified by several simulations to have good agreement of the circulating current components.

  • Cycloconverters can be classified into two types by the main circuit configuration. One is the non- circulating current type required the dead time the other is circulating current type which has the circulating current reactors. The switching devices were highly stressed by the load voltages during dead time on non-circulating current type operation and the circulating currents on circulating current type operation. The overcome those problems, this paper proposes the switching patterns for the partial and the non circulation current type. The PWM methods, which are saw wave comparing method and load current integrating value comparing method, are presented.
