  • Design of a shape transition nozzle is carried out as a part of building a lab-scale supersonic combustion experimental equipment. In order to connect directly the circular shaped vitiation air heater to the square shaped scramjet combustor, area change is evaluated by using the method of characteristics. Shape transition function is introduced to control the transition rate. Boundary layer correction was made through the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics with the assessment on the several shape transition functions. The shape transition nozzle is proved minimizing the growth of boundary layer at the center of the rectangular nozzle surfaces that caused by the pressure gradient at the corners of the rectangular nozzle and the following recirculation regions.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the generation and development of cavitation in circular and elliptical nozzles. In order to investigate the influence of cavitation, the experiment was conducted with a set of elliptical nozzles that had the same cross-sectional area, different orifice aspect ratios (a/b). Each nozzle was made of acrylic so that visualization was possible. With the injection pressure, the internal flow of the nozzle was classified into the no-cavitation, cavitation, and hydraulic-flip regions. Regardless of the nozzle geometry, with the injection pressure, the flow rate in the no-cavitation and cavitation regions increased and the discharge coefficient decreased. However, the flow rate was constant in the hydraulic-flip region. In the elliptical nozzles, the generation and development of cavitation occurred at higher cavitation number than that in the case of a circular nozzle.

  • This study investigates the flow field of multiple-jet measured by hot-wire anemometry. The experiments were classified into two cases; 6- or 7-nozzle located circumferentially in equal interval without or with a central jet. The effect of the number of nozzles the flow field was examined when the Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter is about $10^4$. Mean Velocity, normal and Reynolds stresses were measured in the downstream of jets. The Tollmien's theory holds far downstream at 48d apart from the nozzle exit especially when a nozzle locates at the center. The general flow characteristics is influenced due to the number of nozzles.

  • The effect of the configuration of the nozzle and the impinging surface on the characteristics of the hole-tones has been experimentally investigated. It is found that the plate-tone is a special case of hole-tones, where the hole diameter is zero. The jet velocity range for hole-tones is divided into the low velocity region associated with laminar jet and the high velocity region with turbulent jet. The frequency of the tone is that for the shear layer instability at the nozzle exit or that attainable by a cascade of vortex pairing process with increase of the impinging distance. When the distance is longer than one diameter the frequency decreases to the terminal value near the preferred frequency of the column mode instability, in the range 0.23< $St_d$<0.53, where $St_d$ is the Strouhal number defined by $fd/U_J$, f the frequency, d the nozzle diameter, and $U_J$ the exit velocity. While the convection speed of the downstream vortex, in the present study, is almost constant at low-speed laminar jet, it increases with distance at high-speed turbulent jet. As the frequency increases, the convection speed decreases in the low frequency range corresponding to the preferred mode, in agreement with the existing experimental data for a free jet.

  • The characteristic of jet impinging on the concave surface were analyzed through thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) and numerical investigation. Under a jet Reynolds number of 6600, nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-surface distances (H/d) were changed 5mm and 10mm and H/d=2 and 5. The RNG k-ε turbulence model can accurately predict the distribution of Nusselt number, compared to other models (SST k-ω, realizable k-ε). Heat transfer characteristics varied with the nozzle diameter and H/d, with a secondary peak noted at H/d =2, due to vortex-induced flow detachment and reattachment. An increase in nozzle diameter enhanced jet momentum, turbulence strength, and heat transfer.

  • A tele-operated robot should be used to maintain and inspect nuclear power plants to reduce the radiation exposure to the human operators. During an overhaul of the nuclear power plants in Korea, a ROV(Remotely Operated Vehicle) may enter a cold-leg connected to the reactor to examine the state of the thermal sleeve and it's position in the safety injection nozzle. To measure the positions of the thermal sleeve or scratches from the video images captured during the examination, the camera parameters should be identified. However, the focal length of the CCD camera could be increased to a close up of the target and the aspect ratio and the center of the image could also be varied with capturing devices. So, it is desired to self-calibrated the intrinsic parameters of the camera and capturing device with the video images captured during the examination. In the video image of the safety injection nozzle, two or more circular grooves around the nozzle are shown as ellipse contours. In this paper, we propose a camera self-calibration method using a single image containing two circular grooves which are the greatest circles of the cylindrical nozzle whose radius and distance are known.

  • The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner was modified to enhance the power performance and to reduce the airflow-induced acoustic noise. The suction power efficiencies of the vacuum cleaner were measured for various nozzles; (1) original nozzle, (2) original nozzle with modified trench height, (3) original nozzle with modified connecting chamber, and (4) a combination of (2) and (3). In addition, the suction pressure and sound pressure level around the suction nozzle were measured to validate the reduction of acoustic noise. The power efficiency and mean suction pressure increased when the trench height of the suction nozzle was increased. This was attributed to the suppression of the flow separation in the suction channel. Modification of the connecting chamber in the original nozzle, which had an abrupt contraction from a rectangular chamber into a circular pipe, into a smooth converging contraction substantially improved the suction flow into the connecting pipe. When both modifications were applied simultaneously, the resulting suction nozzle was more effective from the viewpoints of aerodynamic power increase and sound pressure level reduction.

  • This paper is studied on the junction stress of the large tank and the cylindrical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached to a pope or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle cylinder, so it can be approximated that nozzle cylinder is attached to plate. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing FEM Analysis. • In order to find the excavating performance of water-jet nozzle on the sand, the authors were carried out the excavating experiment with the model nozzles which were semi circular sectioned nozzles and rectangular nozzle in water tank. The results were as follows. 1) Excavating maximum depth and width on the sand by the water jet were straightly increased in proportion to the velocity of water jet and the section area of nozzle, and that, by the nozzle distance from the excavating point on the sand, the depth was decreased, while the width was increased straightly. 2) Rectangular nozzle which the thick of hole is 1mm, was a little bit better than the circular nozzle of the same sectioned area on the excavating performance. 3) Empirical equations between the velocity of water jet, the distance of nozzle, and the maximum excavating depth and width by angle of nozzle were expressed as linear, they were as follows on the 45$^{\circ}$ angle of the rectangular nozzle(1$\times$12mm); D=0.0093V sub(0)-0.23H+5.7. W=0.0147V sub(0)+1.06H+10.2. where, D is the maximum excavating depth(cm), W is the maximum excavation width(cm), V sub(0) is the velocity of water jet(cm/s); 926$\leq$V sub(0)$\leq$1504, H is the distance(cm) from nozzle tip to water-jetted point on the surface of sand.

  • Temperature distribution of the circular heat source was studied by analyzing the heat transfer of the environment of the circular source for OLED. Circular nozzle source was used to fabricate thin organic layer as the organic material in it was heated, vaporized and deposited to the large size panel. A modified heater structure of circular source has been suggested. The results of numerical analysis shows that the modified heater structure can use 15% more powder in a batch than the original heater structure does. Moreover, the modified heater structure can improve the uniformity of organic vapor deposition by controlling the temperature.
