  • Usually shell and tube heat exchangers are employed to recover energy between fluids. Recently, numerous papers on these heat exchangers have been published; however, the velocity and temperature profiles or comparison of the features of the flow with or without inside tubes have rarely been described. In this research, experimental and numerical studies were carried out to investigate the characteristics of the flow around the spiral baffle plates without inside tubes in a horizontal circular tube using a particle image velocimetry method and ANSYS 14.0~15.0 version (Fluent). The results showed that swirling flow was produced between the spiral baffle plates. The tangential components were strong between the two spiral baffles; however, the axial or radial velocities components were indicating nearly zero. From the spiral motion in the space of the two baffles, it is considered that there were no dead zones between the spiral baffle.

  • The present study numerically investigated the effect of the geometry of the flattened tube on the thermal performance of a high temperature generator (HTG) of a double effect LiBr-water absorption system. The heat transfer tubes of the HTG were arranged behind a metal fiber burner. The heat transfer of the tubes of HTG were consisted with a set of circular and flattened tubes in series. FLUENT, as a commercial code, was applied for estimating the thermal performance of the HTG. Key parameters were the tube arrangement in the HTG. Temperature and velocity profiles in the HTG were calculated to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. The heat transfer rate of a HTG tube was increased, and the gas temperature around the flattened tube was decreased as the pitch ratio was increased. The heat transfer rate for the circular tube bundle with the pitch ratio of 2.48 were larger by 10% respectively than that of 2.10 and the heat transfer rate for the flattened tube bundle with the pitch ratio of 1.88 were larger by 36% respectively than that of 1.63.

  • Reliable and accurate method of computationally aided design processes of advanced thin walled structures in automotive industries are much essential for the efficient usage of smart materials, that possess higher energy absorption in dynamic compression loading. In this paper, most versatile components i.e., thin walled crash tubes with different geometrical profiles are introduced in view of mitigating the impact of varying cross section in crash behavior and energy absorption characteristics. Apart from the geometrical parameters such as length, diameter and thickness, the non-dimensionalized parameters of average forces which control the plastic bending moment for varying thickness has explored in view of quantifying its impact on the crashworthiness of the structure. The explicit finite element code ABAQUS is utilized to conduct the numerical studies to examine the effect of parametric modifications in crash behavior and energy absorption. Also the simulation results are experimentally validated. It is evident that the circular cross-sectional tubes are preferable as high collision impact shock absorbers due to their ability in withstanding axial and oblique impact loads effectively. Furthermore, the specific energy absorption (SEA), crash force efficiency (CFE), plastic bending moment, peak force responses and its impact for optimally tailoring a design to cater the crashworthiness requirements are investigated. The primary outcome of the study is to provide sufficient information on circular tubes for the use of energy absorbers where impact oblique loading is expected.

  • The present study numerically investigated the tube geometry and arrangement on the performance of a high temperature generator (HTG) of the double effect LiBr-water absorption system. FLUENT, as a commercial code, was used to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. Key parameters were the spacing raito of circular and flattened tubes, the pitch ratio of the rib on the flattened tube, and total heat transfer area of the HTG. Temperature and velocity profiles around the tubes of the HTG were calculated to estimate the thermal performance of the HTG. When the spacing ratio of circular and flattened tube is 1.11 and 0.73, the exhaust gas temperature is $185^{\circ}C$ without rib. The exhaust gas temperature when applied the rib in flattened tubes was lower by $24^{\circ}C$ than that without the rib. Rib can reduce the HTG volume by 7%.

  • A numerical investigation of single phase heat and flow characteristics in circular tubes with a single set of spiral micro fins was performed with varying geometrical parameters like fin height, spiral angle, and number of fins. The properties of $40^{\circ}C$ water was used as a working fluid to simulate a condenser and the RNG $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model was adopted. Calculation results were obtained in fully developed turbulent flow with constant surface heat flux boundary condition. Relative terms were introduced to investigate the substitution effect of conventional smooth tubes. The dimensionless terms were the heat transfer enhancement factor, the pressure drop penalty factor, and the efficiency index. Additionally, a numerical optimization was carried out to maximize thermal performance with the concept of the robust design. A statistical analysis showed that fin height interacts with number of fins and spiral angle.

  • Numerical study has been carried out to investigate heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for streamlined shape tubes. The flow and thermal fields are investigated with varying diameter ratio of the tube ranging from 0.4 to 2.5 and Reynolds number ranging from 10,000 to 30,000. The results show that heat transfer per unit fan power is maximum at $D_2/D_1=0.8$. Furthermore, the heat transfer per unit fan power of streamlined shape tubes was compared with circular tube. The heat transfer per unit fan power of streamlined shape tube was larger than that of circular tube.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to estimate the flexural behavior of circular concrete beams confined by carbon sheet tube under the loading and unloading cycles. Six specimens were produced with different layers of carbon sheets and with or without corrugations inside of tubes. The experimental results represented that the load and displacement capacity are increased in the specimens which have increased layers of tube and have installed corrugations inside of tubes. In order to obtain enough capacity, tubes have to keep tubes at proper layers but it can not affect positively more than certain layers to increase the layers of tube. Therefore, appropriate estimation of structural member is needed to obtain enough capacity and displacement by means of proper carbon sheet direction and layers of tube.

  • The paper presents an experimental study of the structural behavior of circular flyash-concrete-filled steel tubular stub columns under axial compressive loads. In this study, 90% and 100% by weight of the cement in the concrete core was replaced with flyash. Twenty-seven specimens were tested to study the influence of flyash content, wall thickness of the steel tube, and curing age on the ultimate capacity and confinement effect. The experimental results were compared with the design values calculated using AISC-LRFD (1999), ACI (1999), AIJ (1997) and Eurocode 4 (1994). From the experimental study, it was determined that the confinement effect of circular steel tubes filled with high content flyash concrete was better than that of specimens filled with ordinary Portland cement concrete. The 5.88-mm-thick steel tube filled with 100% flyash concrete was equivalent in strength to a steel tube filled with C30 concrete at 28 days.

  • Burst pressure of right circular tube is predicted using analytic method, and asymptotic instability pressure of circular tube with roundness defect is found using FEM. Burst tests of nearly right circular tube specimens are carried out and predictions are compared with burst pressures and their accuracy is discussed. It is confirmed that FEM is useful for prediction of burst pressure.

  • This paper conducted both numerical and theoretical studies to investigate the composite action of notched circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) stub columns under axial compression and established a theoretical method to predict their ultimate bearing capacity. 3D finite element (FE) analysis was conducted to simulate the composite action and the results were in good agreement with experimental results on circular CFT stub columns with differently oriented notches in steel tubes. Parametric study was conducted to understand the effects of different parameters on the mechanical behavior of circular CFT stub columns and also the composite action between the steel tube and the core concrete. Based on the results, a theoretical formula was proposed to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of notched CFT stub columns under compression with consideration of the composite action between the steel tube and the core concrete.
