  • The present study investigates heat/mass transfer for flow through perforated plates for application to combustor wall and turbine blade film cooling. The experiments are conducted for hole length to diameter ratios of 0.68 to 1.5, for hole pitch-to-diameter ratios of 1.5 and 3.0, for gap distance between two parallel perforated plates of 1 to 3 hole diameters, and for Reynolds numbers of 60 to 13, 700. Local heat/mass transfer coefficients near and inside the cooling holes are obtained using a naphthalene sublimation technique. Detailed knowledge of the local transfer coefficients is essential to analyze thermal stress in turbine components. The results indicate that the heat/mass transfer coefficients inside the hole surface vary significantly due to flow separation and reattachment. The transfer coefficient near the reattachment point is about four and half times that for a fully developed circular tube flow. The heat/mass transfer coefficient on the leeward surface has the same order as that on the windward surface because of a strong recirculation flow between neighboring jets from the array of holes. For flow through two perforated plate layers, the transfer coefficients on the target surface (windward surface of the second wall) affected by the gap spacing are approximately three to four times higher than that with a single layer.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an electric riding machine for cycle fitting to control riding posture easily, to measure frame size quantitatively, and to overcome disadvantages of the traditional systems. The electric riding machine consisted of actuator, load controller, and display & control unit. The actuator unit by BLDC(BrushLess Direct Current) motor drives the saddle height up and down, the crank forward and backward, the handlebar up and down, and the handlebar forward and backward. The load controller unit controls loads by Eddy current controller with electromagnet and aluminum circular plate. The display & control unit consisted of frame size controller and display panel which shows top tube length(485~663mm), head tube length(85~243mm), seat tube length(481~671mm), and seat tube angle($62.7{\sim}76.4^{\circ}$). The range of frame size control for developed electric riding machine did not have difference compared to traditional commercial systems, but quantitative and precise control with 0.1 mm length and $0.1^{\circ}$ angle was possible through digital measurement. Unlike traditional commercial systems, frame size control was possible during riding through motor driven method, thus fitting duration decreased. It is necessary for further improvement to have feedback from users. It is believed that developed electric riding machine can help to develop domestic fitting system.

  • In this study, a radial inflow type turbine was applied and the outer diameter of the turbine rotor was 108 mm. The turbine blade on a circular plate disc was designed as an axial-type because its partial admission rate was 1.4-4.1%. The turbine consisted of three stages. The performance test has been conducted with various admission rates, tip clearances and nozzle flow angles. The turbine output power was measured on each stage. The turbine performance was obtained in a wide rotational speed range in order to compare its performance according to various operating conditions. The net specific output torque was also measured to compare its overall performance. Computational analysis was conducted for predicting turbine performance. The computed results were in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • For underwater steel structure, cut that underwater shaped charge device that combines a spring hose, which is an external device of pressure resistance and flexibility with flexible shaped charge, was invented. As a basic experiment for an optimum condition design, an penetration performance was compared by external device shape. To evaluate the result of an experiment, image analysis was carried out after obtaining the model by using the liquid rubber for the penetrated steel plate. To simulate the penetrating process of shaped charge, the AUTODYN program has been used. As a result of analysis, while the average penetration depth of circular and square shaped external devices were similar, the penetration quality was more uniform in the case of circle. In addition, water infiltration occurred in square case, displacement and strain rate according to the increase of the water pressure were measured high.

  • The authors carried out a model experiment to examine the hydrodynamic charactristics of the simple camber and the super-V otter board. The model otter boards are made of 1 mm thick iron plate. The simple camber otter board is made to have $12\%$ camber ratio and $432\;cm^2$ plane projected area, and the super-V otter board to have the same camber ratio as the former in every latitudinal section and almost the same plane projected area. The experiment had been done in a circular flow tank in the speed range of $0.1\~1.2m/sec$. As a result, it is examined that in the simple camber otter board the most effective angle of attack is about $25^{\circ}$, the shearing coefficient 1.47 and the drag coefficient 0.42, while in the super-V otter board they are about $20^{\circ}$, 1.40 and 0.40 respectively, so that the simple camber otter board performs a little better efficiency than the super-V otter board.

  • The quasi-steady approaches to simulate the wind induced vibrations of inclined cables, especially on the rain-wind induced vibration, have been tried by many researchers. However, the steady wind force coefficients used in those methods include only the effects of water rivulet, but not the axial flow effects. The problem is the direct application of the conventional techniques to the inclined cable aerodynamics. Therefore, in this study, the method to implement the axial flow effects in the quasi-steady theory is considered and its applicability to the inclined cable aerodynamics is investigated. Then, it becomes clear that the perforated splitter plate in the wake of non-yawed circular cylinder can include the effects of axial flow in the steady wind force coefficients for inclined cables to a certain extent. Using the lateral force coefficients measured in this study, the quasi-steady theory may explain the wind induced instabilities of the inclined cables only in the relatively high reduced wind velocity region. When the Scruton number is less than around 40, the high speed vortex-induced vibration occurs around the onset wind velocity region of the galloping, and then, the quasi-steady approach cannot be applied for estimating the response of wind-induced vibration of inclined cable.

  • The characteristics of the unstable impinging circular jet is investigated based on the frequency characteristics and the sound field of the impinging-tones. Two symmetric modes S1 and S2, associated with low frequency and high frequency respectively, and one helical mode H have been observed. At low speed the S2 mode is dominant and switched by the S1 mode as the speed increases. When the jet speed is high the S1 mode is very active over the impinging distance from half the nozzle diameter to its ten times, while the S2 mode occurs at shorter distance corresponding to stage 2 and 3. The helical mode H seems unstable, likely to be influenced much by the experimental environment, and occurs at relatively high speed with almost the same frequency characteristics as the S2 mode. By estimating the convection speed of the unstable jet, it is found that the ratio of the convection speed to the jet speed decreases with both Strouhal number and Reynolds number and the speed of S2 mode is faster than the Si mode. When the present experimental results are compared with the previous investigations performed for the hole tone and the impinging tone with a small plate, the S1 mode is found to be associated with the ring vortex of large diameter with low speed, but the S2 mode with the vortex of small diameter with high speed. In addition, the frequency is found to be influenced by the nozzle configuration but the characteristics is almost the same. From the impinging distance and frequency range, it can be deduced that S1 mode is related with the jet column mode and S2 mode with the shear mode.

  • Miniature heat pipe(MHP) with woven-wired wick was used to cool the CPU of a notebook PC. The pipe with circular cross-section was pressed and bent for packaging the MHP into a notebook PC with very limited compact packaging space. A cross-sectional area of the pipe is reduced about 30% as the MHP with 4mm diameter is pressed to 2mm thickness. In the present study a performance test has been performed in order to review varying of operating performance according to pressed thickness variation and heat dissipation capacity of MHP cooling module that is packaged on a notebook PC. New wick type was considered for overcoming low heat transfer limit when MHP is pressed to thin-plate. The limiting thickness or pressing is shown to be within the range of 2mm∼2.5mm through the performance test with varying the pressing thickness. When the wall thickness of 0.4mm is reduced to 0.25mm for minimizing conductive thermal resistance through the wall of heat pipe, heat transfer limit and thermal resistance of MHP were improved about 10%. In the meantime, it is shown that the thermal resistance and heat transfer limit for the MHP with central wick type are higher than those of MHP with existing wick types. The results of performance test for MHP cooling modules with woven-wired wick to cool a notebook PC shows the stability as cooling system since T(sub)j(Temperature of Processor Junction) satisfy a demand condition of 0∼100$\^{C}$ under 11.5W of CPU heat.

  • The direct strength method (DSM) has been adopted by the NAS (2004) and AS/NZS 4600 (2005) for the design of cold-formed steel members. The method can be successfully applied to the design of welded steel members. This paper reviews the development of the DSM for welded steel structural members. The design strength formulae for welded section columns and beams for the DSM are based on the test results performed on welded H-section, C-section, circular and rectangular hollow section columns, plate girders and stiffened plates. The comparison between the design strength of welded sections predicted by the DSM and that estimated by existing specifications is also provided. The comparison verifies that the DSM can properly predict the compressive, flexural and shear strength of welded section columns and beams with the interaction between local and overall buckling.

  • This paper proposes the design of multiband repeater antenna with fire-fighting band for in-building mobile communication. The proposed antenna is composed of a center monopole and 4 parasitic elements on a circular plate. In order to realize good reflection coefficients at the multiband, mutual coupling between 4 parasitic elements and center monopole antenna is considered. The important parameters such as distance between parasitic element and a center monopole, and each height of a center monopole and 4 parasitic elements are simulated to obtain good antenna characteristics at the multiband. The diameter of 4 parasitic elements and a center monopole was fixed to 10 mm for easy design and manufacturing. The measurement results of reflection coefficients, 2-D patterns and gain agreed well with their simulation ones.
