Objectives : The os odontoideum is an uncommon abnormality which is due to non fusion of axis and odontoid process that exists as a separate ossicle apart from a hypoplastic dens. Its clinical significance lies in its potential to produce serious neurologic symptoms after cervical Chuna Manipulation Treatment. We experienced a patient diagnosed as os odontoideum which corresponds to absolute contra-indications of chuna manipulation treatment and report it. Methods : The patient was diagnosed as os odontoideum through cervical spine CT and MRI. Results and Conclusion : During cervical physical examination, we encountered L'hermitte's phenomenon from the patient and suspected one of contra-indications of chuna manipulation treatment. We could diagnose the patient as os odontoideum through cervical spine CT, MRI and prevent him from severe sequelae caused by chuna manipulation treatment.
This study focused on the method of interpretation Meridian muscle's moire topography. We want to know the meaning of structural problems according to moire topography on muscle image. These points in one contour have the same distances from the screen to patient' backward.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report one case of spinal scoliosis patient with neglected congenital muscular torticollis treated by chuna manual therapy. Methods : The patient had been treated with chuna manual therapy. Full spine anteroposterior X-ray was taken to measure cobb's angle and cervico-mandibular angle before and after the period of treatment. Results : After treatment, the cobb's angle has been improved by $12^{\circ}$($31^{\circ}$ to $19^{\circ}$) at thoracic level, by $7^{\circ}$($17^{\circ}$ to $10^{\circ}$) at lumbar level. The cervico-mandibular angle has been improved by $5^{\circ}$($14^{\circ}$ to $9^{\circ}$). Conclusions : Chuna manual therapy was effective for a scoliosis patient with neglected congenital muscular therapy.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate clinical effect of Korean medical treatments for the patient who were diagnosed as the Cauda Equina Syndrome. Methods : The patient was treated by Korean medical treatments including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medication. The Improvement of clinical symptoms was assessed by Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Oswestry Disability Index(ODI) and Muscle Manual Test(MMT). Results : After treatments, VAS and ODI were generally decreased, MMT was improved in case. Conclusions : The Oriental medical treatments might be effective methods to treat the patient who were diagnosed as the Cauda Equina Syndrome.
Objectives This study aimed to analyze the research trends in clinical studies on the traditional Korean medicine used for cancer treatment between 2011 and 2020. Methods We searched 7 Korean web databases (Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], Koreanstudies Information Service System [KISS], Korean Medical database [KMBASE], DBpia, Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information [KISTI], and KoreaMed) and classified collected papers dated between 2011 and 2020 by the year of publication, publication journal, study design, type of cancer affecting the patients, interventions used, evaluation system used, and combination with conventional medicine. Results A total of 167 papers were collected. More than 10 papers were published annually. The papers were mainly published in the Journal of Korean Traditional Oncology (28.7%). The predominant type of the study was case study (67.7%). The main type of cancer was breast cancer, affecting 262 patients. Most of the studies reported using multiple traditional Korean medicine treatments (55.1%). Eighty-nine studies reported using clinical laboratory tests for evaluation. Most of the patients took conventional medicine simultaneously (608 patients). Conclusions Research related to Korean medicine for cancer patients is at a rudimentary level. Therefore, for further clarity, high evidence-based researches, including randomized controlled trials and cohort studies, should be conducted.
Objectives: This study analyzes the electronic medical record (EMR) data of the spine specialist oriental hospital and clinic in various regions, and reports the actual number and used cases of Chuna therapy. Methods: 2,470,772 data was extracted retrospectively from electronic medical records of all inpatients and outpatients who were treated chuna therapy at 21 Korean medicine hospitals and clinics from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. The characteristics of medical treatment using chuna therapy reflect the minimum, maximum and average values of the number of hospitalized patients, length of hospitalization, frequency of hospitalization, number of outpatients, frequency of treatment and frequency of visit. Diseases were classified in the proportion of Chuna treatment according to the KCD, 7th edition. The chuna and blindness charts were derived accordingly from illness and disease of each part of the body. Results: During the study period, a total 1,342,022 inpatients and outpatients visited the study sites. The male proportion was a little higher than the females' (male: 53.7%, female: 46.3%). According to age, the 30s and 40s were more than half the total(30s: 33.0% and 40s: 20.1%). Chuna therapy was treated to more outpatients than hospitalized patients (outpatient: 83.6%, hospitalization: 16.4%), and most treatments were related to musculoskeletal illness(99.06%). Conclusions: As a result of this study, 1,342,389 chuna therapy was performed in 21 hospitals for one year. As highly demanded by the public, we look forward to ensuring national health care options and medical access when health insurance for chuna therapy is applied beginning March 2019.

This study individually analyzed the effects of Korean Facial Chuna Manual Treatment (K-FCMT) combined with Korean medicine (KM) treatment (acupuncture, electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine) on five patients with acute Bell's palsy who visited Dongsuwon Korean Medicine Hospital between August 1 and 31, 2022. During inpatient treatment, two of the five patients received K-FCMT 5-6 times a week, and the other three received the same frequency during outpatient treatment for approximately 2 weeks. Patients with a House-Brackmann grading scale (HBGS) score of ≤4 and Yanagihara unweighted grading system (Y-score) ≥7-8 began to recover after the 2nd-3rd sessions of K-FCMT, which entered the recovery phase quickly. As patients entered the recovery phase (7-9th sessions of K-FCMT), symptoms improved to HBGS scores of 1-2 and Y-scores of 35-40 points. This study suggests the possibility of applying K-FCMT combined with KM treatment to patients in the acute stage of Bell's palsy.
Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the effects of oriental medical treatments and Chuna treatment on patients with pain and limited range of motion(LOM) about shoulder subsequent to scapular fracture. Methods : Two patients suffered from pain and LOM about shoulder after scapular fracture, one is scapular body fracture with multiple rib fractures, the other is only intraglenoid fracture were treated with Chuna therapy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, physical therapy and measured by VNRS(Verbal numerical rating scale) and ROM (Range of motion). Results : After oriental medical treatments and Chuna treatment, we found out a recovery from two patients suffered from pain and LOM about shoulder subsequent to scapular fracture. Conclusions : Through this study, we suggest that oriental medical treatments and Chuna treatment were effective to cure patients with pain and LOM subsequent to scapular fracture.
Objectives This study aimed to propose biomarkers for diagnosing Chuna manual therapy (CMT) based on X-ray images in the thoracic and lumbar spines. Methods Through a literature review and expert consensus process, diagnostic biomarkers for CMT were selected based on the listing system in thoracic and lumbar radiograph anterior-posterior (AP) and lateral views. Results 1. Diagnostic biomarkers were derived from four points on the outer contour of the vertebral body in the thoracic and lumbar spine radiograph lateral view, enabling the diagnosis of flexion and extension malposition. 2. Additional diagnostic biomarkers were identified in the thoracic and lumbar radiographAP view, utilizing points on the outer contour of the vertebral body. These biomarkers facilitate the diagnosis of lateral bending. Moreover, biomarkers derived from the innermost point of the pedicle contour allow for the diagnosis of rotation malposition. 3. Furthermore, through the biomarkers proposed in this study, all malpositions of the thoracolumbar spines and complex Type I and II malpositions can be diagnosed in CMT. Conclusions The biomarkers reported in this study consist of minimal points to determine the position of the vertebral body, providing the advantage of simplicity while minimizing potential errors during the CMT diagnostic process. Further clinical research and the development of related programs should be pursued to expand the evidence for CMT.
The purpose of this study is to report a clinical progress of sudden hearing loss through korean medicine. Between 26th Mar. 2014 and 19th Apr. 2014, she was treated with Chuna manual therapy every day and observed by Pure Tone Audiometry (before and after) and visual analogue pain scale (VAS). A patient was diagnosed with sudden hearing loss on 23th Dec. 2013 in Severance Hospital, she had sudden hearing loss on left side. She had 19 times treatments. At the first of treatment, her audibility was 20 dB on right side, 74 dB on left side and she had tinitus and ear fullness (VAS 8 / VAS 9). At the middle of treatment (2nd Apr. 2014), symptoms of tinitus and ear fullness started improving. State was tinitus VAS 6, ear fullness VAS 6. At the end of treatment (21th Apr. 2014), state was tinitus VAS 4, ear fullness VAS 4, and recorded 35 dB on right side, 80 dB on left side in pure tone audiometry. Chuna manual therapy is estimated to be good for sudden hearing loss especially on tinitus and ear fullness. More cases are required to develop treatment of sudden hearing loss.
