  • This study was performed to compare food consumption patterns, dietary behavior, and nutrition knowledge between Korean professional soccer players and the non-athletic males. Data were collected from 53 soccer players working for Korean professional soccer clubs and 44 non-athletic males, using self-administered questionnaires. There were significant differences in food consumption frequency between two groups. Meats and eggs, fishes and shellfishes, sea weeds were consumed more frequently by the soccer players. The frequency scores of foods rich in iron, calcium, and protein were also higher in the soccer players compared with the non-athletes. Meanwhile, the consumption of alcohol was more frequent in the non-athletes. As for the cooking method, the soccer players showed higher preference for steaming/parboiling and consumed raw vegetables and fruits more frequently than the non-athletic males (p < 0.05). The average scores of soccer players on nutrition knowledge for basic nutrition and athletic nutrition were lower than the respective values of the non-athletic males. However, the soccer players showed better eating behaviors and dietary habits compared with non-athletic males (p < 0.001). They had well-balanced, regular diet and good habits for chronic disease prevention. No significant relationship could be observed with respect to nutrition knowledge and nutritional behavior. Moreover, the experience of getting nutrition information did not affect either nutrition knowledge score or nutritional habits score, except that for habits of chronic disease prevention in non-athletes. Therefore, it is suggested that more effective and practical nutrition education program be needed for promoting healthy eating habits and improving nutritional status in young males.

  • Incidence of nontuberculous mycobacterium (NTM) pulmonary disease is increasing with the wider recognition and development of diagnostic technology. Mycobacterium kansasii is the second most common pathogen of NTM pulmonary disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. However in Korea, the incidence of M. kansasii pulmonary disease is relatively low, and there has been no report of M. kansasii pulmonary disease with bronchial involvement in HIV patients, to the best of our knowledge. We report a case of M. kansasii pulmonary disease presenting with endobronchial lesions in an HIV-infected patient complaining of chronic cough with bilateral enlargements of hilar lymph nodes on chest X-ray.

  • All over the world, people are affected by many chronic diseases and medical practitioners are working hard to find out the symptoms and remedies for the diseases. Many researchers focus on the feature detection of the disease and trying to get a better health recommendation system. It is necessary to detect the features automatically to provide the most relevant solution for the disease. This research gives the framework of Health Recommendation System (HRS) for identification of relevant and non-redundant features in the dataset for prediction and recommendation of diseases. This system consists of three phases such as Pre-processing, Feature Selection and Performance evaluation. It supports for handling of missing and noisy data using the proposed Imputation of missing data and noise detection based Pre-processing algorithm (IMDNDP). The selection of features from the pre-processed dataset is performed by proposed ensemble-based feature selection using an expert's knowledge (EFS-EK). It is very difficult to detect and monitor the diseases manually and also needs the expertise in the field so that process becomes time consuming. Finally, the prediction and recommendation can be done using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and rule-based approaches.

  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic or acute infectious disease which damages more people than any other infectious diseases according to WHO estimates. In this paper, a new automatic detection system of tuberculosis bacilli by using their color information is proposed. Through the deep investigation of color and intensity compositions of tuberculosis images, new pre-processing and segmentation algorithms are suggested. Specific features of bacilli are extracted from the processed images and number counting is done by using domain-specific knowledge rules.

  • From the start of the residency trainingship in 1963, the residency training programs have been contributed much on the establishment and development of preventive medicine in Korea. But these programs are now have several problems to update the changes in health service needs of the population that were caused by a rapid epidemiologic transition from the acute infectious diseases to chronic diseases in last a few decades. Strengthening in medical practice, not just in knowledge is urgently required. Must have more concentrate on preventive service for the individual, as in clinical preventive medicine. Training residents by the systematic and well scheduled programs, not just 'teacher' assistant' in the academic facilities. Trying the change in the system of Specilty of Preventive Medicine to the well established several subspecialty, so more specific competency can be gained through the training. These approach and reformation may not only contribute for the better future of the preventive medicine, but also improve in disease prevention and health promotion, which required by the society in Korea.
