  • In decorative chromium plating, highly concentrated conventionl baths ($CrO_3$ 150~400g/l) have been used. Because of the problems of heavy metal pollution and the saving of raw materials, chromium plating from dilute bath has been developed recently. The present study was performed to determine the effects of all the variables in the low concentrated chromium plating bath, such as brightness, appearence, current efficiency, and plating rate with regard to the bath composition and plating conditions.

  • Much attention has been recently paid to the trivalent chromium electro-plating for the application of surface finishing, mainly because of the environmental issues. Nevertheless, trivalent chromium plating has several critical issues to be figured out for such applications, including instability of the plating solution, poor property of plates and etc.

  • Recently, there has been considerable concern about waste water discharges of chromium. The Chromium(IV) is of particular concern because this form has been demonstrated to be public health hazard. Chromium(IV) could be removed by the method of electrolysis from plating waste water. It was found that almost all of chromium(IV) present could be treated by electrolysis at current, 3A and pH 8.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the exposure level of airborne hexavalent chromium in the plating industry and the exposure level compared to domestic and international occupational exposure limits. Methods: A total 92 samples were collected from ten industrial plating sites. Hexavalent chromium samples were collected using a three-stage cassette equipped with a 37 mm, 5 ㎛ pore size PVC filter. The analysis was performed by ion chromatography. Results: The geometric mean of hexavalent chromium concentration in the plating industry was 0.052 ㎍/m2, and it was found that the average exposure level was 0.8 times the South Korean exposure limit. When applying the US ACGIH TLV, however, the average concentration was more than twice as high. Conclusions: The South Korean exposure limit for hexavalent chromium needs to be strengthened due to significant differences in exposure levels according to domestic and international occupational exposure limits. Furthermore, respiratory and dermal sensitization should be labeled.

  • This paper was studied on the corrosion and corrosion-wear behavior of chromium (Cr) plating in the acidic environments. In the various pH of acidic solutions, the electrochemical polarization test and wear-corrosion test of Cr plating were carried out. And thus potential, corrosion current density and corrosion-wear loss behaviour of Cr plating are investigated.

  • Decorative properties of chromium depositions from oxalic acid bath containing chromium oxide and ammonium sulfate have been examined over a wide range of bath compositions and plating conditions. The obtained results from this experiment are summarized as follow: The followings were determined as a optimum conditions, bath compositions; $CrO_3\;200{\sim}250\;g/{\ell},\;H_2C_2O_4{\cdot}2H_2O\;500{\sim}700\;g/{\ell},\;(NH_4)_2SO_4\;40{\sim}120\;g/{\ell}$, and operation conditions; pH $2.0{\sim}2.5$, current density $15{\sim}250\;A/dm^2$ at bath temperature range of $30{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. Bright chromium deposits were obtained over a wide range of ammonium sulfate concentration and bath temperature. Decorative property for chromium deposition was adopted to apply stoichiometric ratio of $CrO_3$ concentration and $H_2C_2O_4{\cdot}2H_2O$.

  • Recently, with rapid development in marine and shipbuilding industries such as marine structures, ships and chemical plants for ship, there occurs much interest in the study on corrosion characteristics played an important role in mechanical design. This paper was studies on the corrosion characteristics of chromium plating in the marine environment. Under the various specific resistance, the electrochemical polarization test of chromium plating was carried out. And thus corrosion potential, polarization resistance, corrosion current density, control efficiency of corrosion and polarization control behavior of chromium plating are investigated. The main results are as the followed : 1. The polarization resistance of Cr plating and Ni become higher than that of base metal, also and these material become low with decrease of the specific resistance. 2. As the specific resistance decreases, the corrosion current density of Cr and Ni plating is lower than that of base metal. 3. The corrosion reaction of Cr plating, Ni plating and base metal vs. specific resistance is cathodic control.

  • The addition of cyclo propane carbonyl (cpc) to chromium electroplating bath resulted in a chromium deposit which had greatly improved mechanical properties compared to conventional chromium deposits in condition of heat treatment at high temperature. The as-deposited layers had a Vicker's hardness of about 1170, which is comparable to that of conventional chromium plating deposits. With annealing, the hardness goes through a maximum of 1650 at $600^{\circ}C$. Generally speaking, the hardness of conventional plating decreases monotonically with heat treatment. X-ray diffraction show that annealing up to above $400^{\circ}C$ causes formation and growth of chromium crystallites and that chromium carbides form at above $500^{\circ}C$ temperature.

  • In chemical plating of nickel and chromium on steel, studies on various factors affect-ing the plating operations were carried out. The optimum bath compositions and operat-ing conditions were obtained. The structure and properties of the as deposits or deposits after heat treatment were investigated. (1) The most optimum conditions for the chemical nickel and chromium plating were; 〔Ni2+〕/〔H2PO2-〕; 0.5∼0.8, 〔Cr3+〕/〔H2PO2-〕; 0.6∼0.9 PH;5.0∼5.5, temperature; 90∼95$^{\circ}C$ (2) In the case of nickel deposition, the hardness of deposits increased with increasing phosphorous contents. Heat-treating at the temperature range 200$^{\circ}C$ to 600$^{\circ}C$, the maximum hardness of deposits was obtained at 400$^{\circ}C$ and decreased at temperature above 400$^{\circ}C$ due to growth of Ni3P. (3) Corrosion resistance of chemical nickel deposits was improved with increasing of p-hosphorous contents and heat treating temperature.

  • Chromium plating is a common surface treatment technique extensively applied in industry due its excellent properties which include substantial hardness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, surface color, and luster. In this study, the effect of $MoS_2$ particles of the composite coating was investigated. To improve the lubrication of mold, $Cr-P-C/MoS_2$ composite plating was studied by varying the $MoS_2$ content. The current efficiency of the composite plating incorporated $MoS_2$ particles was increased at $MoS_2$ contents of 0.5 and 1.0 g/l due to the incorporation of fine particles. On the other hand, when the content of $MoS_2$ is 1.0 g/l or more, the current efficiency is lowered due to an increase in impact on the cathode surface. In order to evaluate the mechanical properties of Scratch test were conducted. Scratch test confirmed the lubricity and abrasion resistance characteristics revealed that the composite plating with added $MoS_2$ had relatively low surface roughness and uniform surface modification to improve its properties.
