The practice of welding stainless steel is known to produce various valance states of chromium. $CO_2$ flux cored arc welding on stainless was performed in fume collection chamber. Content of total chromium and hexavalent chromium in fumes, content of hexavalent chromium in total chromium, solubility of hexavalent chromium were investigated. Content of total chromium in fumes increases from 2~3% to 7~9% as a function of input energy, but hexavalent chromium, less than 1.2% in fumes, is not related to input energy. Hexavalent chromium in fumes exists as solubles up to 90%. Content of total chromium in flux cored arc welding fumes and solubility of hexavalent chromium are similar to shielded metal arc welding fumes, but content of hexavalent chromium is similar to metal inert gas welding fumes. These characteristics are relevant to flux of wires and $CO_2$ shielding gas.
This study was performed to evaluate the hexavalent chromium content in flexography inks and organic pigments used as colorants for the ink. The digestion of sample was carried out under alkaline condition, and the content of soluble hexavalent chromium extracted from samples was determined by UV-visible colorimetric analysis method after alkaline digestion. Duplicate sampling system to obtain two digested samples, was applied in this study. To determine the hexavalent chromium content in the flexography ink and organic pigment colorimeteric analysis was employed. Because the organic pigment is the main ingredient of flexography ink it is important to remove the errors associated with the colorant of the ink in colorimetric determination. The duplicate sampling system allowed us to correct the errors associated with the colorimeteric measurement. The additional filtration was found an essential step to exclude colorimeteric error derived from the various precipitates. The soluble hexavalent chromium content in flexography inks was generally less than 5 ppm. Yellow, violet and some magenta colors showed higher soluble hexavalent chromium contents. The content of hexavalent chromium in organic pigments was greater than flexography inks, and yellow, violet and some magenta pigments contained greater amount of hexavalent chromium, which indicated that the hexavalent chromium in inks derives from the colorants. The soluble hexavalent chromium content in linerboards were below 1 ppm, and no hexavalent chromium was detected in UKP. Results suggested that flexography ink is the main factor to cause hexavalent chromium in linerboard and organic pigments.
The alloy content of structural materials of nuclear power plants has been recognized an important factor in predicting flow accelerated corrosion (FAC). In particular, many literature data reported that chromium content is one of the most important alloying element and even a small amount of chromium is effective to suppress FAC. This report reviewed and compared chromium models of Ducreux, Bouchacourt, and Kastner which were used in predicting FAC rates. The plant data indicate that Ducreux model may be conservative for the specimen containing 0.15 wt% chromium. The related articles were reviewed as follows. Combined effects of chromium content, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), flow velocity, test time, and kinds of amine on the FAC rate were described. 0.1 wt% chromium in steel did not affect the FAC rate with changes in pH. The FAC rates pronounced with higher flow rate and increased with increasing test duration(600 d) for 0.013 wt% chromium. The FAC rates in mixed amine chemistry were higher than in ammonia chemistry, which may be lessened by the addition of chromium to the steel.
Oxidation of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) can increase availability and toxicity of chromium. In this study, possible mechanisms by which pH and organic matter can control the chromium oxidation and reduction in soil system were examined using four soils of different pHs and organic matter contents. Reduction of Mn-oxides occurred in the soils of higher organic matter content (4.0%), but Mn-oxide was quite stable during the incubation in the soil of pH 7.0 and 0.5% organic matter content. Manganese oxides can be reductively dissolved at lower pH and higher organic matter conditions. The soil of pH 7.0 and 4.0% organic matter content showed the highest Cr-oxidation potential. Reduction of soluble Cr(VI) was observed in all the soils examined. The most rapid reduction was found in soil of pH 5.5 and 4.0% organic matter content, but the reduction was slow in soil of pH 7.0 and 0.5% organic matter content. Thus, the reductive capacity of organic matter added soils was much higher as compared to other two soils of lower organic matter content. In all the soils examined, the reductive capacity of soluble chromium was much higher than the oxidative capacity. Organic matter was found to be the most important controlling factor in the chromium oxidation and reduction. Reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) could be a potentially useful remediation or detoxification process, and availability and toxicity of chromium in soil would be controlled by controlling organic matter content and pH of the soils.
One of the trace constituents included in cement clinker, chromium, has become prominent and highly noticed lately as a social issue both inside and outside of this country because it affects the human body negatively. The purpose of the present study was to investigate leaching properties of water-soluble hexavalent chromium by different manufacturing conditions of cement clinker. Raw materials were prepared to add different $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$ sources. After the raw materials, such as limestone, sand and clay, iron ore was pulverized and mixed, and the raw meal was burnt at $1450^{\circ}C$ in a furnace with an oxidizing atmosphere. Leaching of soluble hexavalent chromium showed a tendency to decrease with an increasing LSF and IM. However, leaching of soluble hexavalent chromium increased with an increasing S.M. Alkali contents of iron source minerals is closely related to the leaching properties of soluble hexavalent chromium. Green sludge has the highest content of alkali added; leaching of water-soluble hexavalent chromium was mostly high. In order to reduce the water-soluble hexavalent chromium in cement, reducing the alkali content in raw materials is important.
The surface appearance of zinc coating chromated electrochemically was investigated with the concentration of impurities in chromating solution. The chromium content and yellowness of chromated film decreased with more than 0.1g/1 Zn in chromating solution, while white ness of it increased slightly. The chromium content and whiteness of chromated film also decreased with more than 0.1g/1 Fe in chromating solution, but the yellowness of it increased. Chromium content, whiteness and yellowness of chromated film decreased slightly with more than 0.5g/1 $Cr^{3+}$<\TEX>. But the chromium content and surface appearance of chromated film are not influenced with less than 1.0g/1 Pb in chromating sloution.
We quantified the human carcinogenic metals (chromium, nickel) in fumes from flux cored arc welding using stainless steel (FCAW/SS) wires. Zinc and calcium were also quantified because of their possibility of zinc chromate and calcium chromate, respectively. Welding was performed in an American Welding Society standard fume collection chamber. Insoluble and soluble forms of metals were analyzed by ISO 15202 method. Total chromium (insoluble+soluble) content and total nickel content were lower in FCAW/SS fumes (4.65%, 1.05%, respectively)than in stainless steel content (ca. 18%, 8%,respectively). Insoluble fraction in total chromium was 79.8 (range 64.5~95.1)% and 94.4(range 90.1~98.1)% in total nickel. Atomic emission spectroscopy used in this study does not differentiate the chromium valence status while ACGIH defines its carcinogenicity according to the valence status. From this study and previous study, we estimated the hexavalent chromium content in FCAW/SS was 0.2~1.1% and about 85% of them was soluble. The content of zinc and calcium, which can be existed as chromate forms, was low (0.02 %, 0.04% respectively) in FCAW/SS. Exposure assessment for zinc chromate and calcium chromate is possible because chromium in both compounds is used as a surrogate even though it is not well known that what compounds of zinc and calcium are formed in welding fume.
Three hundred and twenty four one day old mixed sex broiler chicks were assigned at random into 9 treatment groups. The experimental design was a 3${\times}$3 factorial arrangement. During the starter period (week 1-3), chicks were fed ad libitum. A cornsoybean meal based diet contained 23% crude protein, 3,200 kcal/kg metabolizable energy (NRC, 1994), and supplemented with organic or inorganic forms of chromium. Two organic chromium products, chromium yeast (Cr-Yeast from Alltech Biotechnology Corporation Limited) and chromium picolinate (Cr-Pic) were supplemented at the rate of 200, 400 and 800 ppb. One inorganic product, chromium chloride, was supplemented at the rate of 200, 400 and 800 ppb. During the finishing period (week 4-7), the corn-soybean meal based diet contained 20% crude protein, 3,200 kcal/kg metabolizable energy (NRC, 1994), and the same levels of chromium as in the starter period were added. No significant difference was observed among treatment groups in average daily gain, feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio and mortality. The carcass percentage of broilers receiving 200 and 400 ppb organic chromium (Cr-Yeast or Cr-Pic) was significantly increased (p<0.01). In addition, the supplementation of organic chromium reduced (p<0.05) breast meat fat content but increased breast meat protein content. The addition of chromium in the diet had no effect on boneless breast, skinless boneless breast, boneless leg, skinless boneless leg but reduced percentage of sirloin muscle. Total cholesterol and triglycerides were reduced by organic Cr supplementation. Supplementation with 200 and 400 ppb of both Cr-Yeast and Cr-Pic showed the lowest total cholesterol. The effects of type of Cr on HDL and LDL were variable, however, LDL increased with increasing level of Cr supplementation. This trial indicates that organic chromium tended to improve growth performances and carcass composition, reduced total cholesterol and triglycerides. The optimum level of organic chromium supplementation was at 200 ppb.
This study investigated the effects of cod liver oil and chromium picolinate on the serum traits and egg yolk fatty acids and cholesterol content in laying hens. One hundred 45-week old single comb white Leghorn laying hens were assigned randomly to four groups. These groups were: (1) control (soybean oil), (2) 1,000 ppb (${\mu}g/kg$) chromium (organic form chromium picolinate) (Crpic), (3) 3% cod liver oil (CLO), and (4) 1,000 ppb chromium with 3% cod liver oil (CLO+Crpic). The experiment was conducted for 40 days. Results indicated that serum triacylglycerol (TG) and cholesterol contents in the CLO group and the serum glucose content in the Crpic group were significantly lower than those in the control group (p<0.05-0.01). The yolk cholesterol content in the CLO and Crpic groups were also lower than the control group (p<0.01). The lipoprotein profile displayed that in the Crpic group, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) were significantly higher (P<0.05) than the control group. Meanwhile, low-density lipoprotein+very low-density lipoprotein (LDL+VLDL) and LDL-C+VLDL-C were significantly lower (p<0.05) than the control group. Notably, of all four groups, the CLO group displayed a more profound effect on serum traits and lipoprotein (p<0.05-0.001). Furthermore, the fatty acid composition of the egg yolks presented that C18:2 in the CLO and Crpic groups was significantly lower (p<0.05-0.001) compare to the control. However, only in the CLO group, C18:3, C20:5 and C22:6 were significantly higher (p<0.001) than the control. Only serum glucose and LDL+VLDL showed the CLO${\times}$Crpic interaction (p<0.05), most parameters did not. Therefore, supplemented chromium picolinate or cod liver oil in the diet of laying hens had beneficial effects. However, when these two factors were combined, there was no interaction with most parameters.
Since it was developed by Joseph Aspdin, cement has been a common construction materials up to the present time. However, there are trace constituents in cement clinker. One of the trace constituents included in cement clinker, chromium, has become prominent and highly noticed lately as a social issue both inside and outside of this country because it affects the human body negatively. The aim of the present study was to investigate the concentration of water-soluble hexavalent chromium in cement clinker by using industrial by-products. For that reason, raw materials were prepared to add different $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, and $Fe_2O_3$ sources. After the raw materials such as the limestone, the sand and the clay, iron ore was pulverized and mixed, and the raw meal was burnt at about $1450^{\circ}C$ in a furnace with an oxidizing atmosphere. The part in the raw materials of the clinker was substituted with slag, sludge, etc. and this was used to manufacturing cement clinker. To investigate the water-soluble hexavalent chromium content in clinker, raw meal was prepared by changing the modulus, the type, and the content of clinker materials and tested concentrations of hexavalent chromium in the clinkers. To determine $Cr^{+6}$ formation of the clinker, tests were done with raw meals adding chromium by using different industrial by-products. Consequently because the chromium was to be included in the raw materials of the clinker, production of Portland cement clinker was included with the chromium. Also, the chromium was converted into hexavalent chromium in the burning process.
