  • Human exposure to environmental carcinogens can be detected by a number of methods including immunoassay, $^{32}P-postlabeling$ assay, and fluorescence technique. These assays have been applied to measure biological markers of carcinogen-adducts formed with macromolecules such as DNA, RNA and protein. In an attempt to investigate causal relationships between carcinogen exposure and tumor formation, specific carcinogen-adducts have been quantitated from human tissues and body fluids of cancer patients, occupational workers heavily exposed to certain carcinogens, smokers and controls. Carcinogens studied for biological human monitoring include benzo(a)pyrene, aflatoxin B1, UV light, ethylene oxide, 8-methoxypsoralen, 4-aminobiphenyl, vinyl choride, N-nitrosamine, cisplatin and other chemotherapeutic agents. Relevance of human monitoring for cancer research, progress in this field, methods to detect carcinogen-adducts are reviewed here. It is hoped that these approaches will be used for the risk assessment of carcinogen exposure, cancer etiology study and cancer prevention in humans.

  • The silk fibroin solution was prepared and applied to the surface of fabrics for the purpose of weighting as well as a surface modification. The water-soluble fibroin solution can be obtained by dissolving the cocoon fibroin in a boiling solution of 50% calcium chloride for 60 minutes. For the fixation of a water soluble fibroin onto the fabric surface, the various methods were investigated. The fixation can be achieved on a silk fabric by the after treatment with ethanol, stannous choride and methacrylamide. On the other hand, the epichlorhydrin compound is the most promising fixation agent for a cotton fabric. As a result of the examination of property changes, the softness and crease recovery were lessened for a silk crepe fabric by treating with 1-2% fibroin solution, while those properties were improved for a silk knit fabric.

  • The antiwashout concrete which is a type of specific concrete is manufactured by using a plenty of superplasticizer with the non-dispersible underwater concrete admixture, and the application of it on construction site is being increased. But when we measure choride ion content by using the potentiographic tester, because it is over total chloride ion content(0.3kg/㎥ under) of Korean Concrete Specification, the claim of construction site is being presented on the quality of antiwashout concrete. Accordingly, hte aim of this study is to verify actual chloride ion content of antiwashout concrete by chloride ion analysis due to chemical admixtures by performance of antiwashout concrete. In conclusion the actual chloride ion content of antiwashout concrete is overestimated by anion($OH^-, SO4^{-2}, S^{-2}, etc) of chemical admixtures, and is proved to be as low as that of ordinary concrete.

  • Durability of concrete has been currently issued in the engineering societies and a large number of studies on the concrete corrosion in salty environment have been performed. The reinforcement corrosion, which is the primary reason of deterioration of the concrete structure exposed to chloride environment. is caused by the chloride ions infiltration owing to underground water seeping into the concrete. In this study. the endurance periods using the diffusion equation of the concrete specification have been evaluated on the concrete structures with different addictives for the brand new R/C subway structure exposed to seashore underground water. Furthermore. the guidance for proper use of the addictives and the reasonable thickness of concrete cover are derived for concrete mixing. From the result of the evaluation corresponding to salt damage for Inchon subway line I, the endurance periods of the ordinary Portlandcement concretes are represented as $42\~75$ years and fail to achieve the objective period of 100 years. However, the lower water-cement ratio expands the endurance periods and the blast furnace slag concrete with small quantity of the silica fume, which shows the best performance of corrosion resistance in this study, represents more than 170 years of the endurance period. Moreover, the case of use of blast furnace slag and fly ash together shows the endurance period of $134\~171$ years and it means that the result very satisfies the objective endurance period.

  • This study was aimed to explain the essence of Hydroxylammonium hydrochloride(H.A.) effect on degummed silk fiber increasing the colour sites due to oxime generating reaction. H.A. in aqueous solution caues to increase the amount of [H+] and reduce pH values as the concentration of H.A. increases. The rate of [H+] absorption of silk fiker in acidic solution differs on the basic of solution pH and shows a specific uptake in each pH, the lower the pH of solution, the higher the amount [H+] absorption. The pH of solution after treating of silk fiber in H.A. and HCl, showed more remaining [H+] in H.A. solution due to [H+] releasing under the procedure of oxime production. Also it was revealed that in higher concentration of H.A. the reaction for oxime fixation in silk fiber carried out stonger and as a result the bigger gap with acid uptake curve appeared. FT-IR analysis of silk fiber treated with H.A. revealed the creating of intermolecular H-bond at the 2,981-2.930 cm-1, which was not appeared for nontraeted silk fibers and shows H-bond between N-OH group in oue chain and C=) group in another chain of silk protein. Colourimetry of dyed silk fiber after H.A. tratment showed that the silk fiber treated with the high concentration of H.A. compare to low concentration, absorbed more dyeing molecules and so Showed less percontage of Whiteness.

  • Chloride penetration into concrete is a hot issue of concern all over the world, notwithstanding, very few attempts have been conducted to explore the effect of cracks on choride penetration. Cracks provoke to lose a main function of watertightness of concrete and lead to reduce the service life of concrete. For this reason, it is necessary to define a critical crack width to prevent a quick chloride penetration through crack. In this study, experiment is focused on establishing a critical crack width in terms of chloride penetration. Concrete specimens with different crack widths I crack lengths have been subjected to rapid chloride migration testing. In a side of analytical solution, a simple approach to quantify the chloride diffusion coefficient of only crack zone excluding sound concrete was proposed. The result clearly showed a critical crack width of 0.03 mm. Based on the experimental results, a phenomenological model was proposed to explain the meaning of critical crack width in practical engineering. In this model, cracked concrete zone was divided into three zones. These zones corresponded to a wide crack, a zone with micro-cracks and an uncracked zone.

  • This paper presents experimental and analysis studies about both the corroded steel expansion and the variation of poor bonding range between steel and concrete. A loss of overall bonding capacity at the concrete-steel interface is evaluated experimentally and crack patterns at the bottom of the concrete are presented here. Steel-concrete interface is covered by rubber due to present local loss of the concrete-steel interface bonding capacity. In case of crack analysis performed by commercial FEM programs. we investigated crack‘s pattern and location. Finally, it is concluded that overall flexural capacity of the reinforced concrete structure is increased by the corroded steel expansion and is dependent of the bonding range at the steel- concrete interface. These results give an important factor to decide a life of reinforced concrete structures.

  • This experiment was to investigate decoloization characteristics of E1 effluents from the bleaching plant of pulp mill with three white-rot fungi(Trametes versicolor, Ganoderma appanatum and Pleurotus ostreatus). In addition, the effect of carbon and nitrogen resources was discussed on its decolorization. The color removal of E1 effluent during shaking and stationary cultures were 72% and 80%, respectively. Stationary culture was more effective on decolorization of E1 effluent compared to the shaking culture. The optimum inoculum weight was 1.0g based on dry weight of mycelia . The decolorization medium I showed 88% of the color removal of E1 effluent with in one day cultivation of T.versicolor and P.ostreatus . Color removal was increased from 87% to 90%. T.versicolor and P.ostreatus by the addition of 0.5% glucose. By addition of nitorgen sources(ammonium sulfate and ammonium choride), medium was much higher than that of carbon source. With 0.1% ammoniumm sulfate, P.ostreatus and T.versicolor showed 94% and 92% of the color removal within one day of cultivation , respectively. On decolorization medium II, T.versicolor and P.ostretus were 94% of oclor removal with addition of carbon source. The addition of nitrogen source was much more efficient than that of carbon source. With 0.1% amminium chloride, T.versicolor and P.ostreatus showed 95% of its color removal . The decolorization medium II was higher color removal than medium I, and also MnP and laccase were produced. However, the decolorization medium I produced a little MnP and laccase activity. It could be suggested that MnP and laccase may play an important role in decolorization of E1 effluent.

  • EAF's dust has been treated mainly by pyrometallurgical reduction process in rotary kiln furnace to recover valuable metal elements such as Zn and to avoid the disposal of hazardous materials to waste. Recently, hydrometallurgical eletrowinning of zinc from a zinc-amino chloride solution obtained by the leaching of EAF's dust was developed to recover high grade zinc metal from EAF’s dust. But there are some disadvantages in each process such as difficulty of operation condition control and sticking problem in kiln process and low extractability and recovery of zinc owing to insoluble zinc-ferrite in electrowinning process. We propose a new combined process of pyrometallurgical one and hydrometallurgical one to treat EAF's dust efficiently and economically. In this study, ammonium chloride solution leaching of crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust was carried out to find out the efficiency of zinc extraction from it and the possibility for performance of eletrowinning in the proposed process. Effects of various leaching variables ruck as leaching temperature, concentration of leaching solution and leaching time were investigated. And the leaching results of the crude zinc oxide were compared with those of EAF's dust. The extraction percents of zinc in ammonium chloride solution leaching of the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust were above 80% after 60 minutes of leaching under the leaching condition of 4M NH$_4$CI concentration and above leaching temperature of 7$0^{\circ}C$. And the concentrations of zinc in the leached solution were obtained above 50g/$\ell$. The activation energy calculated for zinc extraction in NH$_4$CI leaching was 58.1 KJ/㏖ for EAF's dust and 15.8 KJ/㏖ for the crude zinc oxide recovered from reduction of EAF's dust.
