  • In the study, the effects of elevated $CO_2$ and temperature on the photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll content, nitrogen content, carbon content, and C/N ratio of Phytolacca insularis and Phytolacca americana were examined under control (ambient $CO_2+$ ambient temperature) and treatment (elevated $CO_2+$ elevated temperature) for 2 years (2008 and 2009). The photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and water use efficiency of two plant species were higher under the treatment than the under the control. The stomatal conductance of P. insularis was higher under the control, but that of P. americana was not significantly affected by $CO_2$ and temperature under the treatment. The chlorophyll contents of two species were decreased about 72.5% and 20%, respectively, by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. The nitrogen contents of two species were not significantly altered by increase in $CO_2$ and temperature. The carbon contents of the two species were higher under the treatment than under the control. The C/N ratio of P. insularis was higher under the treatment but that of P. americana was not significantly affected by $CO_2$ and temperature. These results demonstrated that the physiological responses of P. insularis native plants might be more sensitively influenced by a $CO_2$-mediated global warming situation than those of the P. americana invasive plants.

  • Wheat is an economically important cereal worldwide and is a staple food in many countries. Extensive researches have been performed on the nutritional value and antioxidant potentials of sprouts of legumes like soybean, however very limited studies have been carried out on the sprouts of Korean wheat cultivar. The objective of this study was to investigate the phytochemical and antioxidant potentials of Korean wheat sprouts. The sprouts were grown for 10 (WS-10), 20 (WS-20), and 30 (WS-30) days at room temperature. The pH, color, chlorophyll, free amino acid, 1,1-diphenly-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), and total polyphenol content of the sprout samples were determined. The pH of sprouts was increased in the older sprouts. Color values were significantly influenced by the age of sprouts. The chlorophyll content was lowest but the total free amino acid content was highest in WS-30. On the other hand, the DPPH free radical scavenging potential and total polyphenol content were lower in WS-30. The results suggested that Korean wheat sprouts could be a potential source of nutrients and natural antioxidants.

  • CHA, Jong Whan (Dept. of Biology, Coll. of Education, Seoul National Univ.) Effect of Gibberelline on the growth and internal components of selected vegetable plants. Kor. Jour. Bot. V(3):11-20, 1962. The effect of GA on the growth as well as on the internal components of theleaves of ordinary vegetable plants under the soil culture was investigated. A relatively small difference in GA concentration applied showed a marked influence on the growth and constituents of the plants observed. The increase of growth was related to a highly significant digree with the intensity of GA. chlorophyll and carotene content in the leaves were significantly with increasing concentration of GA, except for some plants. The growth in all examined plants did not correspond to the contents of chlorophyll and carotene. In contrast the ascorbic acid in the leaves treated with GA decreased in proportion to the GA concentrations. Chlorophyll and ascorbic acid value differed greatly during the two experiments and the difference was proved significant. Carotene content varied with chlorophyll although the ratio of chlorophuyll to carotene was not so high as that obtained by Beak and Redman.

  • In order to study the red-coloring effects of hot pepper fruit by light treatment during after-ripening period, 'Karak Geumjang No. 2 green hot pepper fruits, Capsicum annuum L., after 30 to 35 days from flowering were harvested and white, red and blue light treatments at the energy level of $40\;{\mu}watt/cm^2/sec$ were given at $25^{\circ}C$. When compared with white light, total chlorophyll content was strikingly decreased by blue light treatment and no difference in the chlorophyll contents between red and white light was observed. The chlorophyll a and b showed a similar decreasing patterns as shown in the case of total chlorophyll. Total carotenoid content was higher in the blue light treatment by 31% than the white light. However, red light decreased the carotenoid condent as compared to the white light treatment. But ${\beta}-carotene$ was not changed by red light as compared to white light. Blue light treatment increased ${\beta}-carotene$ content (0.71 mg%-f.w.) as compared to white light treatment (0.56 mg%-f.w.). Therefore, blue light treatment increased red-coloring responses of hot pepper fruit during after-ripening period. The capsaicin content was slightly increased by blue light and no red light influence was observed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate changes in salinity, pH, ascorbic acid, chlorophyll and its derivatives of the different gochu-jangachi (unripe hot pepper preserved in soybean paste and soy sauce). As the fermentation proceeded, the salinity of these samples stored at 15$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that stored at 5$^{\circ}C$. The pH of samples was slowly lowered and little different during the fermentation at 5$^{\circ}C$. In the during fermentation at 15$^{\circ}C$, the pH of gochu-jangachi with soybean paste was maintained over 5 until 60 days and that of gochu-jangachi with soy sauce was dropped under 5 after 32 days, after that the value was slowly decreased. As fermentation time passed, the content of ascorbic acid in gochu-jangachi was decreased rapidly at 15$^{\circ}C$ than at 5$^{\circ}C$ and that was disappeared after 16 days (soybean paste) and 20 days (soy sauce). In both samples, the degradation of chlorophyll a was faster than chlorophyll b, especially at 15$^{\circ}C$. The degradation of chlorophylls or production of pheophytin and pheophorbide were closely related to the ascorbic acid content during fermentation.

  • This study was investigated the possibility of measuring chlorophyll in paddy crops using two kinds of chlorophyll meters(SPAD-502, Field Scout). The results of correlation analysis showed the 0.7758(r$^2$) relationship between the chlorophyll contents of paddy leaves measured by SPAD and spectrophotometer. It indicates that chlorophyll content in paddy crops could be measured using the SPAD. Considering the data of the SPAD and Field Scout there was significant difference between their chlorophyll contents measured by the SPAD and Field Scout. Likewise, such results were consistent with the corrected data using light intensity. According to the results, it can be concluded that it is difficult to describe the rice chlorophyll measured by the Field Scout more accurately than the SPAD when using one standard spectrum and another spectrum for reflectance measuring. The chlorophyll variance measured at a research institute and a farmer's field revealed that the output of SPAD was more reliable than that of the Field Scout.

  • Chlorophyll is an abundant pigment found in all green plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. This study uses methanol, acetone and water to extract spinach and mate powders in order to examine the possibility of dyeing animal fibers with chlorophyll without chemical alteration. It was shown that methanol extracts of spinach and mate powders can be effectively used to dye wool and silk fabrics if the extract is mixed with water by methanol:water 65:35 v/v. Compared to methanol extract, the acetone extract showed lower chlorophyll yield and lower dye uptake. Water was not an appropriate solvent for chlorophyll extraction and dyeing. Spinach powder showed a higher dye uptake than mate powder due to the higher chlorophyll content than mate powder. It is possible that the chlorophyll dyeing of wool and silk fabrics is due to the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxy amino acids in fiber and the carbonyl groups of chlorophyll. These carbonyl groups are on the heterocyclic ring and the methyl and ethyl side chains of chlorophyll.

  • We have investigated needle life span, photosynthetic pigment and nitrogen allocation pattern in the needle of Picea jezoensis in the three populations (Gyebangsan, Deogyusan and Jirisan) to find out growth environmental condition which needs the strategy development of conservation and restoration against population decline. Needle survival rate was the highest in Gyebangsan (87.0%) and the lowest in Jirisan (71.6%), and it decreased with the increase of needle age. Needle chlorophyll a and b in Deogyusan and Jirisan showed higher content in older needle, but chlorophyll content in Gyebangsan was the highest in 2-year-old needle. Carotenoid content was the highest in the needle in Gyebangsan, and it increased along with needle age. Chlorophyll a/b ratio showed the highest value in Jirisan and the lowest value in Gyebangsan. Chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio decreased with needle age, Needle nitrogen content was the highest in Deogyusan (1.51%) and the lowest in Gyebangsan (1.40%), and the older needle had the lower content. In contrast, the highest chlorophyll/nitrogen ratio represented the oldest needle.

  • Reproductive phenology and physiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. to moisture content and nutrient content of soil were analysed in order to obtain basic data for effective conservation and restoration. Epilobium hirsutum L. is a perennial plant. But Epilobium hirsutum L. grew reproductively in all moisture and nutrient gradients. Flower bud, flowers and peduncle were respectively ripened in earlier under highest moisture condition and highest nutrient condition. And, number of flowers and peduncle were more quickly increased under highest moisture condition and highest nutrient condition. Chlorophyll content was high under highest moisture condition and higher middle moisture condition. However, we found no significant difference of chlorophyll content regard to nutrient gradients. There was no difference in minimum chlorophyll fluorescence among all moisture and nutrient gradients. The photochemical efficiency values of PS II were 0.75 in all moisture gradients, and it was 0.78 in highest nutrient gradient. The chlorophyll content of Epilobium hirsutum L. increased as the moisture content increased, and the Fv/Fm value increased as the organic matter increased. Our results showed that high moisture and nutrient content of soil advance their breeding season and promote reproductive growth. It might be important basic informations for the maintenance of population and the management of habitat of Epilobium hirsutum L. an endangered plant species.
