BACKGROUND: It is important to understand residual patterns of pesticides applied on crops for ensuring their safety in agricultural products. However, there are few studies on the residual patterns of pesticides in minor crops, which are small in cultivation area. In this study, residual amounts of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr sprayed on perilla leaf as a minor crop were investigated to know their residual patterns. METHODS AND RESULTS: Bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr were sprayed 2 or 3 times on perilla leaves at a week interval prior to harvest, and the perilla leaves were collected at 0, 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after the final application of pesticides. Recoveries for residual analysis of pesticides spiked on perilla leaves with concentrations of 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg were 81.9-104.8%. The residual amounts of pesticides interpreted using first order kinetics model show that dissipation constants of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr in perilla leaves were 0.0724-0.0535 and $0.0948-0.0821day^{-1}$, respectively. In addition, the dissipation half-lives in perilla leaves were 9.6-12.9 days for bifenthrin and 7.3-8.4 days for chlorfenapyr. When pre-harvest residue limits (PHRL) of bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr at 10 days before harvest calculated on the basis of the dissipation constants and maximum residue limits of the pesticides were calculated as 17.1 for bifenthrin and 15.9 mg/kg for chlorfenapyr. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the PHRL calculated using the time-dependant residual patterns of pesticides in perilla leaves and their regression analysis may be used as experimental evidences in order to ensure the safety of pesticides in perilla leaves before harvest.
The susceptibility of Aphis gossypii populations collected from three fields (WJ, CC, and GS) was evaluated to three insecticides (afidopyropen, chlorfenapyr and cyantraniliprole) and three binary mixtures. Three field populations showed resistance ratios of over 100 to all insecticides. The Combination Index (CI), %M(synergism), Co-Toxicity Coefficient (CTC), Wadley Ratio (WR), Synergism Ratio (SR) and Abbott Ratio (AR) were used to evaluate combined effect of the insecticides. Afidopyropen + chlorfenapyr (CI ≤ 0.16; %M(synergism) ≥ 94; CTC ≥ 764.5; WR ≥ 6.4; SR ≥ 6.9 and AR ≥ 1.1) showed a synergism in all filed populations. WJ and CC populations showed a synergism in all binary mixtures of insecticides, but GS population showed an antagonism for chlorfenapyr + cyantraniliprole (CI, 1.63; %M(synergism), 30; CTC, 64.0; WR, 0.6 and AR, 0.54) and afidopyropen + cyantraniliprole (CI, 6.7; %M(synergism), 1; CTC, 19.8; WR, 0.2 and AR ≤ 0.55). All mixtures (afidopyropen + chlorfenapyr, chlorfenapyr + cyantraniliprole and afidopyropen + cyantraniliprole) showed a control value of over 99% after 21 days of treatment in the field. This study highlights that binary mixtures of three insecticides serve as an effective control strategy for A. gossypii.

The insecticidal activities and residues of chlorfenapyr [4-bromo-2-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-ethoxymethyl-5-trifluorornethyl pyrrole-3-carbonitrile] against Thrips palmi was evaluated under laboratory and vinyl house conditions. Effectiveness of chlorfenapyr against T. palmi on red pepper leaves was lasted for 9 days at a concentration of 50 ppm but there was no significant differences between emulsifiable concentration and wettable granule under laboratory conditions. In vinyl house, high toxicity was investigated at 6 hours after application of chlorfenapyr in a concentration of 50 and 100 ppm and insecticidal effect was maintained for 11days after 2 times weekly application in cucumber. Control effect was above 97% against T. palmi larva and larva+adults after 2 times weekly application in vinyl house.
A comparative experiment was conducted to investigate the persistence of chlorfenapyr residue and its biological activity to two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, after treatment of chlorfenapyr suspension concentrate (10% SC) on paprika plants at recommended (2000 times dilution) and double dosage. Biological half-lives of chlorpfenapyr were estimated as 8 and 5 days in leaves and fruits of paprika plants, respectively. While initial deposits of chlorfenapyr residues in leaves at recommended and double dosages were 22.22 and 37.75 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ at the time of application, its residue decreased to 1.56 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ and 3.62 ${\mu}g\;g^{-1}$ at 29 days after treatment, respectively. Residual biological activity of chlorfenapyr SC to T. urticae at recommended dosage lasted for 7 or 15 days on the basis of 24 or 48-hrs mortality test assayed with feeding on excised leaf chlorfenapyr-treated. The control efficacy to the mite showed a good agreement with the persistence of chlorfenapyr residues in leaves.

Chlorfenapyr is a widely used insecticide, that is very lethal if ingested. It exhibits delayed toxicity in which there are few symptoms at first which suddenly worsen after a few days. A 66-year-old female patient ingested about 90 mL of chlorfenapyr liquid hydrating agent (Chlofenapyr 10%) and showed stable vital signs with no specific symptoms and findings other than a mild fever, vomiting, and nausea. From the 3rd day of ingestion, creatine kinase was high, and rhabdomyolysis was suspected. From the 4th day of ingestion, pancreatic enzymes began to gradually increase. A diffusion-weighted image showed a multifocal high signal intensity in the white matter and corpus callosum area. On the 8th day after ingestion, she suffered a high fever and a heart attack and died. Thus, if a patient is suspected of taking chlorfenapyr, he/she needs active treatment and monitoring even if he/she does not exhibit any symptoms.
BACKGROUND: This study was performed to investigate pre-harvest residue limit (PHRL) in Chwinamul, to estimate biological half-life for residue of each pesticide. Chwinamul was sprayed with pesticides of standard and double application rate. Chlorfenapyr and fenarimol were sprayed once on Chwinamul at 10 days before harvest, and it was sampled 7 times and analysed the residual change of two pesticides. METHODS AND RESULTS: Chwinamul sample was extracted with acetonitrile and partitioned with dichloromethane, and pesticide residues were determined with GCECD. Method quantitation limit (MQL) of chlorfenapyr was 0.10 mg/kg and that of fenarimol was 0.02 mg/kg. Recoveries of chlorfenapyr at two fortification levels of 1.0 and 5.0 mg/kg were $94.2{\pm}$1.70 and $99.0{\pm}1.61%$, respectively. Recoveries of fenarimol at two fortification levels of 0.2 and 1.0 mg/kg were $92.1{\pm}2.14$ and $83.1{\pm}1.98%$, respectively. CONCLUSION(s): The biological half-lives of chlorfenapyr were about 3.5 days at standard application rate, and 3.4 days at double application rate. The biological half-lives of fenarimol were about 6.0 days at standard application rate, and 5.9 days at double application rate. The PHRLs of chlorfenapyr were recommended as 13.02 and 6.25 mg/kg for 10 and 5 days before harvest, respectively. And the PHRLs of fenarimol were recommended as 2.80 and 1.67 mg/kg for 10 and 5 days before harvest, respectively.
In order to know the residual pattern of pesticides and predict to the degradation period until below MRL, we experimented diazinon, iprodinon and chlorfenapyr for shallot. They were the most detected pesticide in shallot by NAQS (National Agricultural product Quality management Service) survey. In this experiment, we sprayed those pesticides 15days before harvest and analyzed 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 day sample to establish logical equation and to calculate $DT_{50}$. During the cultivating period, the residue amount of diazinon was changed from 1.02 mg/kg (0 day) to 0.01 mg/kg (14 day), $DT_{50}$ was 2.19 days, and iprodione was changed from 1.45 mg/kg (0 day) to 0.14 mg/kg (14 day), $DT_{50}$ was 4.15 days, and chlorfenapyr was changed from 1.5 mg/kg (0 day) to 0.01 mg/kg (14 day), $DT_{50}$ was 1.97 days. The $DT_{50}$ of double amount in those pesticides, diazinon was 2.24 days, iprodione was 4.82 days, and chlorfenapyr was 2.24 days, respectively.

Chlorfenapyr is widely used as an insecticide, despite it being fatal to humans. However, chlorfenapyr-induced central nervous system toxicity has rarely been reported. We report the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings in a rare case of chlorfenapyr-induced toxic leukoencephalopathy. A 71-year-old man who had ingested chlorfenapyr approximately two weeks prior visited our hospital and presented with bilateral lower motor weakness and voiding dysfunction that had developed two days before admission. Brain MRI revealed extensive bilateral white matter abnormalities involving the corpus callosum, internal capsule, brain stem, and bilateral middle cerebellar peduncle. Furthermore, spine MRI revealed diffuse swelling and hyperintensity on the T2-weighted images.
The uptake and transportation patterns of the residual boscalid and chlorfenapyr were investigated from the soils to Korean cabbages. The recovery rates of the pesticides spiked in the soils and Korean cabbages were 87.5 to 105.2%. Korean cabbages were cultivated in soils treated with two different concentrations of the pesticides as low (3.0 mg/kg) and high (6.0 mg/kg) concentrations in greenhouse for 28 days. The initial level of boscalid was determined as 2.77 and 5.66 mg/kg for the low and high concentration of boscalid-treated soils, respectively. After 28 days of treatment, the residual boscalid in soils decreased to 0.53 and 1.60 mg/kg for the low and high concentration of boscalid-treated soils, respectively, and thus it was reduced to 71.7 to 81.9%. The initial level of chlorfenapyr was determined as 2.38 and 6.43 mg/kg for the low and high concentration of chlorfenapyr-treated soils, respectively. After 28 days of treatment, the residual chlorfenapyr in soils decreased to 1.36 and 2.91 mg/kg for the low and high concentration-treated soils, respectively, and thus it was reduced to 42.9 to 54.8%. The residual pesticide analysis was done with 2 day intervals from 21 days-cultivated Korean cabbages after seeding. Uptake rates of boscalid from the soil to Korean cabbages were 2.4 and 2.2% for the low- and high-concentration of boscalid-treated soil, respectively. However, the uptake rate of chlorfenapyr by the cabbages was 1.5 and 1.3% for the low and high concentration-treated soil, respectively. The uptake rate of chlorfenapyr by the cabbages was lower than that of boscalid. These results showed that the residual pesticides in soil could be absorbed by Korean cabbages depending on their physicochemical properties.
In order to use in the classification of minor crop for the mutual application of safe use guideline, it was compared a green onion with a scallion on the residue property of insecticide bifenthrin and chlorfenapyr. After pesticides were applied 2 times with 1 week interval in that day of harvest, 3 days, 7 days, 10 days and 14 days before harvest, vegetables were harvested, and the residue of pesticides was investigated. Base on the residue in that day of harvest, the deposit of spray solution in vegetables was calculated. The deposit of spray solution of bifenthrin was 123.0 mL/kg in a green onion, and 74 mL/kg in a scallion. In case of chlorfenapyr, it was calculated 126.5 mL/kg in a green onion, and 70.0 mL/kg in a scallion. When the amount of the deposit of both pesticides was compared a green onion with a scallion, it was higher in a green onion. On the other hand, it was estimated the predicted dissipation curve of pesticides in a green onion and a scallion during cultivation. The dissipation curve of bifenthrin was y = 1.0334 $e^{-0.0602x}$ ($R^2$= 0.8606) in a green onion, and y = 0.7693 $e^{-0.1823x}$ ($R^2$= 0.9756) in a scallion. In case of chlorfenapyr, it was y = 2.2603 $e^{-0.0519x}$ ($R^2$= 0.9043) in a green onion, and y = 1.2940 $e^{-0.1051x}$ ($R^2$ = 0.9782) in a scallion. The half-life of bifenthrin was 11.51 days in a green onion, and 3.80 days in a scallion, respectively. Also, it was estimated half-life in chlorfenapyr, it was 13.35 days in a green onion, and 6.59 days in a scallion, respectively. The half-life of both pesticides in a green onion was longer than in a scallion. When both vegetables were compared with the residue property, the deposit of spray solution and half-life of dissipation in a green onion were more than those in a scallion.
