  • A receiver architecture with low complexity for chirp spread spectrum (CSS) of IEEE 802.15.4a is proposed. To demodulate the received signal at the highest signal to noise power ratio, matched filter is generally adopted for the receiver of wireless communication systems. It is, however, not resonable to adjust the matched filter to the receiver of CSS whose objectives are low complexity, low cost and low power consumption since complexity of the matched filter is high. In this paper, we propose a new receiver architecture using differential multiplication and accumulator not matched filter for demodulation. Also, bi-orthogonal decoder implemented by only adder/subtractor is proposed. The hardware resources for implementation are reduced in the proposed receiver architecture, although bit error rate performance is low compared with the receiver architecture based on the matched filter.

  • Convergence of IT and BT is considered in many area, especially in medical care industry. The example of this trend is a capsule endoscope. But in a capsule endoscope, communication through human body has a few restrictions. At first, the transmit power should be limited not to have a bad effect on human organs and for the battery capacity. Second, the channel characteristic of human body has not been examined exactly. Third, general modulation / demodulation techniques which require a channel estimation cannot be used because of battery limit. There also may be a lot of interference signals because a capsule endoscope uses UWB bandwidth. In this paper, we introduce Chirp Spread Spectrum Differential Binary Phase Shift Keying(CSS-DBPSK) and propose Chirp Spread Spectrum On-Off Keying(CSS-OOK) which don't require a channel estimation and robust to interference signals. Using CSS-DBPSK or CSS-OOK, we can get 5 dB or 2~3 dB of Eb/N0 gain at 10-5 target BER. And if there are interference signals, those gains of CSS-DBPSK and CSS-OOK are increased.

  • A new frequency offset estimation algorithm for chirp spread spectrum based on matched filter is proposed. Generally, the differential phase between successive symbols is used for the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm. However, if the conventional frequency offset estimation algorithm is used for CSS, phase ambiguity arises because of long symbol duration and guard time. The phase ambiguity causes performance degradation of matched filter since the received signal is corrupted by the integer frequency offset. In this paper, we propose a new frequency offset estimation algorithm which separates integer and fractional frequency offset estimation for removing the phase ambiguity. The proposed algorithm estimates the integer frequency offset by using differential phase between matched filtering results of sub-chirps and successive symbols. Then, the fractional frequency offset is estimated by using the differential phase between successive symbols Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm well removes the phase ambiguity, and have almost same estimation performance compared with conventional one when there is not the phase ambiguity.

  • The chirp signaling has been mainly used in radar systems due to its good correlation characteristics, and nowadays it is applied to real time locating system(RTLS). The RTLS with chirp signaling was chosen as a standard such as ISO/IEC 24730-5 and IEEE 802.15.4a. In this paper, the performance of a real time locating system with chirp signaling was evaluated and simulated with relative distance error rates. We considered three cases of S/I = -30[dB], -20[dB], and -10[dB] with Rician factor K=10 and K=20. The performance was enhanced with K factor improvement by 25%, 27% and 50% for respective three cases of S/I. As results, in case of S/I < -20[dB], the minimum signal power is required for performance improvement even though the line of sight component is helpful. And also, in case of S/I ${\geq}$ -20[dB], as the line of sight component is stronger the better performance is obtained.

  • In this paper, we propose the Tile Based Frequency Hopping - Chirp Spread Spectrum(TBFH-CSS) technique, which has excellent Low Probability of Intercept(LPI)/Anti-Jamming(AJ) performance. Conventional Frequency Hopping - Chirp Spread Spectrum(FH-CSS) technique uses only single chirp signal, that makes the follower jammer easy to find and jam. However, proposed TBFH-CSS uses various kind of chirp signals which are generated according to the structure of basis tile, it is composed the basis time unit and the basis bandwidth unit. The TBFH-CSS signal has variety signal period and signal bandwidth. Therefore, the follower jammer hard to find and difficult to jam the TBFH-CSS signal. We analysis the LPI/AJ performance of the TBFH-CSS technique when the follow jamming attack exist and compared with the performance of the conventional FH-CSS technique. From the analysis, we can see the proposed TBFH-CSS technique has better LPI/AJ performance than conventional technique.

  • A novel integrated laser, that is, a distributed reflector laser diode integrated with an electroabsorption modulator, is proposed to improve the output efficiency, single-mode stability, and chirp. The proposed laser can be realized using the selective metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy technique (that is, control of the width of the insulating mask), and its fabrication process is almost the same as the conventional electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) process except for the asymmetric coupling coefficient structure along the cavity. For our analysis, an accurate time-domain transfer-matrix-based laser model is developed. Based on this model, we perform steady-state and large-signal analyses. The performances of the proposed laser, such as the output power, extinction ratio, and chirp, are compared with those of the EML. Under 10-Gbps NRZ modulation, we can obtain a 30% higher output power and about 50% lower chirp than the conventional EML. In particular, the simulation results show that the chirp provided by the proposed laser can appear to have a longer wavelength side at the leading edge of the pulse and a shorter wavelength side at the falling edge.

  • Integrity of the control and instrumental cables in nuclear power plant is important to maintain the stability of the nuclear power plants. In order to diagnose the integrity of the cables, the diagnostic methods based on reflectometry have been studied. The reflectometry is a non-destructive method and it is applicable to diagnose the live cables. We introduce a Gaussian enveloped linear chirp reflectometry to diagnose the cables in the nuclear power plants. In this paper, we estimate the instantaneous frequency of the Gaussian enveloped linear chirp signal by using the weighted robust least squares filtering to localize the impedance discontinuities in the class 1E instrumental cable.

  • Slanted and chirp interdigital transducer(IDT) configurations were studied for generating the surface acoustic wave(SAW) with wide bandwidths on a piezoelectric substrate. These devices can be applied to manipulate optical path of light along the waveguide, ultimately used for optical switches and holographic image implementation. Prior to fabrication, the coupling of modes(COM) modeling and simulation were performed to extract optimal design parameters. The optimally designed wideband device showed wide bandwidth of 30MHz, low insertion loss of -25dB, and abrupt side suppression ratio (SSR). Several design conditions were determined during device implementation, such as slanted angle, aperture length, number of fingers, and central frequencies of IDTs. These factors were experimentally analyzed and described in details in this paper.

  • In this paper, we investigated the improvement degree of transmission distance of the various initial frequency chirped optical pulse with 5 dBm initial power dependence on the various bit rate and fiber dispersion coefficient, when MSSI(Mid-Span Spectral Inversion) with the optimal pump power condition is adopted for the compensation method for optical pulse distortion. And we analyzed the influence of mutual relation of optical pulse frequency chirp and Kerr effect on the MSSI methods for the long-haul optical transmission through the computer simulation. We found that the compensation degree of distorted optical pulse varies as a consequence of the variation of combined phase modulation of self phase modulation(Kerr effect) and initial frequency chirp parameter dependence on the fiber dispersion coefficient. And we found that, if the transmission bit rate is increased k times, the dispersion coefficient value of dispersion shift fiber is decreased $2^k$ times so as to be almost the same performance of the transmission system with k times lower bit rate.

  • In this paper, an inversion method using chirp signals and two near field receivers is proposed. Inversion problems can be formulated into the probabilistic models composed of signals, a forward model and noise. Forward model to simulate chirp signals is chosen to be the source-wavelet-convolution planewave modeling method. The solution of the inversion problem is defined by a posteriori pdf. The wavelet matching technique, using weighted least-squares fitting, estimates the sediment sound-speed and thickness on which determination of the ranges for a priori uniform distribution is based. The genetic algorithm can be applied to a global optimization problem to find a maximum a posteriori solution for determined a priori search space. Here the object function is defined by an L₂norm of the difference between measured and modeled signals. The observed signals can be separated into a set of two signals reflected from the upper and lower boundaries of a sediment. The separation of signals and successive applications of the genetic algorithm optimization process reduce the search space, therefore improving the inversion results. Not only the marginal pdf but also the statistics are calculated by numerical evaluation of integrals using the samples selected during importance sampling process of the genetic algorithm. The examples applied here show that, for synthetic data with noise, it is possible to carry out an inversion for sedimentary layers using the proposed inversion method.
