A conventional silica gel/water adsorption chiller has been analyzed numerically. A novel non-dimensional mathematical model has been presented to analyze the design effect of different components of an adsorption chiller. The design parameters of this system are characterized by the number of transfer unit, NTU, of different components and the inert material alpha number, ${\alpha}$of different components of the systems. Results show that condenser NTU$\sub$a/ has the most influential effect on the system performance, which is fellowed by absorber NTU$\sub$e/. It is also seen that coefficient of performance (COP) and non-dimensional specific cooling capacity increases with the increase of NTU$\sub$a/ and NTU$\sub$e/, but decreases with the increase of inert material alpha number. A thermo-economic data of the adsorption chiller and some other heat pump systems those are in practical operation are also presented.
Cost related to building equipment accounts for about 85% of the life cycle cost of buildings. Therefore proper selection of air-conditioning system is important for reducing the overall cost of buildings. In this study, large capacity ice thermal storage and absorption chiller-heater for air-conditioning a building with a floor area of $9,900\;m^2$ are compared economically. For easy input and analysis, an Ms Excel VBA program has been developed. To consider all the factors of initial and operation costs effectively, an annual equal payment method is proposed. Under the assumptions made in this study, overall cost of an absorption chiller-heater is less than that of an ice thermal storage, but this is not absolute and different outcome may result if different assumptions are made. This study is useful for those who are interested in choosing an economical air-conditioning system for large-size buildings with simple calculations.

It is common to find lots of organic and inorganic precipitates inside of industrial cooling system. Analytical instruments including ICP-AES, IC, XRD, and SEM were used to investigate the effects of application of Mg on reaction among coolant, precipitates and suspended matters within chiller system. Magnesium (Mg) has a decreasing effect on total dissolved material in the coolant suggesting a significant improvement of quality of coolant. Disappearance of most organic materials in the cooling devices also suggests an inhibitive effect on the growth of organic matters.

Screw compressor type chillers are widely used in refrigeration for capacity over 30 RT. In general, chillers operate under part-load conditions. Therefore, information on characteristics at part-load is very important in view of chiller performance and energy economy. In this study, performance tests of part-load and economizer system using R22 and R407C have been performed for various secondary fluid temperatures. Adoption of an economizer system increased the cooling capacity and improved COP except for lower part-load condition when injection volume ratio is 1.01. For the same cooling capacity condition at part-load, COP of both non-economizer and economizer system showed similar values.
The turbo chiller uses centrifugal compressor, which operates at about 14,500 rpm. Due to the high rpm of the impeller, the noise of chiller males one of the serious problems. The possibility of the sound reduction by using absorbing material is studied in this paper. The generated sound propagates through the duct and then radiates to the outer field. So, the use of sound absorption material inside the duct is one of the effective methods. To study the effect of location of the material, we use Boundary Element Method to analyze the sound field inside the duct system. Numerical study shows the highest sound pressure region is near the elbow of curved duct. From the numerical study, it is also shown that appropriate use of sound absorbing material at this region makes 8dB reduction of the highest noise level.

An experimental study of the absorption process of water vapor into lithium bromide solution was performed. For the purpose of development of high performance absorption chiller-heater utilizing Lithium Bromide solution as working fluid, the absorber is the most effective to improve the performance of an absorber because it requires the largest heat transfer area in an absorption chiller-heater system. This paper introduces bare tube and inner ribbed notched fin tube for the absorber of absorption chiller-heaters. Inner ribbed notched fin tube has about 10∼20% higher heat and mass transfer performance than bare tube conventionally used in absorbers and the it is expected to perform high heat and mass transfer. This paper will provide important information on the selection of absorber tubes in commercial absorption chill-heaters.

This study is a research to compare efficiency of new cooling system (chiller, pre-cooler) to that of the conventional system at the hydrogen refueling station (HRS). This study includes contents for thermodynamic comparison of cooling system for HRS and comparison of pros and cons of its components. So It is to establish design concept of cooling system of HRS supplying with fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). HRS is charging high pressure H2 (700 bar) to FCEV. However cooling system is need to prevent temperature rise in tank. This cooling system consists of pre-cooler and chiller system.

The cooling performance of heat pump system for light-duty commercial electric vehicle was evaluated experimentally. The cooling performance characteristics of the heat pump for light-duty commercial electric vehicles were evaluated by varying the temperature, flow rate of chiller coolant, and electric compressor speed, under the exterior air temperature of 35 ℃ and interior air temperature of 25 ℃. Increasing the compressor speeds decreased the cooling system efficiency by 16.4 % on average with the cooling capacity increasing by 8.0 % on average and the compressor work increasing by 27% on average. To use waste heat from the coolant to chill power electronic components, such as the motor and inverter, a chiller was installed to transfer heat between the coolant and refrigerant. Increasing the temperature of the chiller coolant from 35 ℃ to 55 ℃ decreased the efficiency by 18.2 % on average due to higher condensing heat source. Increasing the coolant flow rate from 10 liter/min to 20 liter/min did not affect the cooling capacity of the system due to a similar total condensing heat transfer rate at the chiller and the exterior heat exchanger. In future works, heating performance will be investigated by varying the operating conditions to use the chiller's waste heat with an improvement of heating capacity.

The demands are increasing for the efficient heating and cooling system and thermal comfort environment because of changes in climate and environment, and deterioration of buildings and facilities can cause education budget to increase. So the study to apply heating and cooling system to university is urgently needed to improve an optimum energy saving system, educational environment and convenience of maintenance. For this reason, we selected a university campus in Seoul then came to understand the current situation and found some problems. We drew alternatives from comparative analysis of them. It selects representative building and carries out economic analysis to evaluate characteristics of energy consumption and economics on each type of heating and cooling system. As a result we drew the optimum system from those processes as previously stated. We studied 3 available systems, absorption chiller, EHP(Electric Heat Pump) and GHP(Gas Engine Heat Pump). According to LCC analysis suppose that the value of EHP is 1, it came out that the value of absorption chiller is 1.5 and the value of GHP is 2.2. This study, suggesting the optimum heating and cooling system, will support educational and research activities furthermore effect to maximize energy efficiency. Ultimately it is expected that it will contribute to make eco-friendly Green Campus.

This study compared constant water bath performances of conventional water-cooled refrigerator and electric heater with an air-cooled VRF chiller and electric heater equipped with optimal control algorithm. In heating mode, the air cooled VRF chiller and electric heater combination reduced the set temperature arrival time by an average of 42 minutes, and energy was also reduced by 18%. In cooling mode, the two systems took 70 minutes to reach the set temperature and showed no difference. Energy was reduced by 33.5% with the new system. For constant temperature maintaining experiment, after reaching the set temperature of $15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$ and $22^{\circ}C$, temperature deviations were all in the range of $-0.2^{\circ}C$ to $+0.1^{\circ}C$. Energy was reduced by an average of 84.9%. Through this study, possibility of precise temperature control by an air cooled VRF chiller system was confirmed.
