  • Purpose: This study was designed to develop and test a structural model for children's adaptation in divorced families. The hypothetical model was constructed based on the Family Resilience Model by McCubbin and McCubbin. Methods: Data were collected using self-report questionnaires from 219 children (3-6th grade) in divorced families. The children attended one of 22 community agencies, 8 after-school programs, 3 elementary schools in three cities in South Korea. The collected data were analyzed using LISREL program to test the hypothetical model. Results: The modified model was constructed by deleting four paths in accordance with the statistical and theoretical criteria. Compared to the hypothetical model, the revised one had a better fit to the data. Self-esteem, and beliefs about parental divorce had direct effects, and family communication and internal control had indirect effects on children's adaptation in divorced families. These variables explained 56% of the variance in children's adaptation. Conclusion: The modified model was supported by empirical data. This model could be applied to family nursing interventions with divorced families or any other suffering family transition. When working with children experiencing parental divorce, it is important for nurses to enhance children's self-esteem, family communication and to decrease children's negative beliefs about parental divorce to help in their adaptation.

  • The purpose of this study was two folded. The first was to examine relationships among children's self-resilience, their mother's parenting style, family strength and the children's school adjustment and the second was to investigate the relative effects of the three variables on the children's school adjustment. To achieve the purposes, a total of 198 5th and 6th grade children and their mothers were surveyed on children's resilience scale, parenting style scale, family strength scale, and school adjustment scale. As a results, positive relationships among the four variables were observed. Also it was founded that children's self-resilience is the most effective, mothers' parenting style is the second, and family strength is the least factor on school adjustment. From the results the researchers suggested that early intervention is needed to enhance family strength as well as intervention to improve self-resilience in order to increase the children's school adjustment.

  • Smart devices have become an essential part of human life; however, excessive dependency on these devices has become a serious issue for both children and adults. In this study, a research model was developed which hypothesized that mothers' smartphone addiction influences children's media dependency, and that this effect is sequentially mediated by mothers' work-family strains and parental monitoring. To test this hypothesis, an analysis of data from the 13th Wave of Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), conducted in 2020, was performed. The data were collected from 726 children (359 boys, 367 girls) with an average age of 12.23 years (SD=.30). The analysis was conducted using SPSS 27.0 and Process MACRO Ver. 4.2. The results were as follows. Maternal smartphone addiction increased mothers' work-family strains, which in turn lowered the level of parental monitoring, which was associated with an increase in children's media dependency. Furthermore, mothers' smartphone addiction had a partial mediation effect on children's media dependency. In sum, this study revealed that the mothers' smartphone addiction increased children's media dependency, and this effect was sequentially mediated by an increase in mothers' work-family strains and a decrease in parental monitoring. This study verifies that mothers' smart device usage as well as their working environment has a significant effect on children's media dependency. Therefore, to increase parental monitoring of children's media usage, mothers' work-family strains need to be reduced.

The sample for this study consisted of 601 university students living in the cities of Seoul, Incheon, and the Gyeonggi province. The data were collected using structured questionnaires distributed through an online survey. Descriptive statistics including frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviation and cluster analysis, One-Way ANOVA and $X^2$ test are applied to analyze the data. The major results of this study are as follows: 1. The values of the university students regarding marriage, children, and familism were used as parameters to categorize the different types of family values on the cluster analysis. The results of the cluster analysis showed that the university students' family values could be classified into three types; "family-centered values", "individual-centered values", and "familism children-centered value". 2. The family values of the university students differed according to each student's gender, age, religion, socioeconomic status, gender-role attitude, and relationships with his or her father and or mother. 3. • The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between children's perceptions of interpersonal relations (parents, family, and peers) and those of self, and to examine how the perceptions are related ot problem-solving and social preference. The subjects of this study were 625 children of 5th and 6th grade in 4 primary schools in Taejon City. Results showed positive correlations among four measures of social perceptions (to parents, to family, to peer, and to self). Therefore we have found generalization among children's representations across four interpersonal domains-that is, parents, family, self, and peer. Children's problem solving-behaviors were most significantly related with parents/family domains among interpersonal relationships. In the case of boys, direct path between the perceptions of parents/family and problem solving-behavior was significant, whereas girls' perception of parent/family was associated with problem solving-behavior both directly and indirectly, through girls' perceptions of self and peer. Social preference was highly correlated with perceptions of peer and of father. This study has found that both boys' and girls' peer representations were established for the role as mediators between parents/family representations and peer ratings of social preference. These findings revealed that the impact of family representations on peer rejection was mediated by children's beliefs about their peers.
