  • The illustrations of picture book for children transmit not only one image but also the summary and contents of the picture book by connecting images harmoniously. The images of picture book give children a variety of emotion and impression depending upon the location of image at various factors such as blank and form, texture and colors, and space feeling, etc. Therefore, the picture book for children has the continuity transmitting the flow of images by not only the contents of natural story but also uniform and rhythmical factors. The continuity of images can transmit images by visual ideas that are produced depending upon the connections of pictures between writings and picture, between images, and inside images. In such a way, children can understand the contents of story. The paper examines the continuity of the images of the picture book for children and describes correct expressions on harmonious connections of the images made based on children's individuality and ingenuity.

  • This study investigated differences in children's story comprehension as they related to the types of reading media. The participants comprised 62 four-years-olds from two child-care centers located in a middle-income region of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. In order to control the experience effect, newly developed stories published into two formats of reading media (paperback books and electronic books) were provided to the participants. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in children's story comprehension depending on the types of reading media. Paperback book readers and electronic book readers did not show any significant difference in story comprehension, which consists of recall, recognition and reasoning tasks. As literature pertaining to children's usage of electronic books is limited, the present study offers guidelines for the development of children's reading media and may serve as a useful resource for future studies.

The subjects were 60 children in low-income families, aged 5, selected from 24 child care centers located in three cities nearby Seoul, South Korea. The experimental group had received intervention program for 8 weeks, two days a week, and three teachers conducted the intervention program for 30 to 40 minutes for each session. The intervention program was administered to the children with picture book reading activities in the first session, followed by providing more extensive activities in the second session. Afterwards, the study allowed the children to take one picture book to read at home. To evaluate the effect of the picture book reading intervention program, this study utilized instruments called the Preschool Receptive-Expressive Language Scale and the Concepts about Print. Significant differences found between the two groups. The experimental group showed higher scores compared with the control group in the post-test of expressive language development. Also, children in the experimental group showed a significant increase in the concepts about print after the intervention program was administered. In conclusion, findings indicate several changes in positive outcomes after implementation of the picture book reading intervention program.

  • This study presents a way to design picture books that allow children to experience indirectly through realistic media at home and educational institutions for children whose direct experiences and activities are reduced offline in the post-COVID-19 era. The development and popularization of realistic media such as AR continues to be grafted and developed in the picture book field, and the advantage of this picture book is that children at the stage before learning letters can feel the story and character situation of the book through the experience of AR and QR animation in the picture book. In this process, you can get access to imaginary areas that can not be experienced in flat-panel illustrations with spatial animation to help improve the scalability and literacy of the story contained on the page. Children's education through realistic animation can increase the learning effect and needs to continue after COVID-19. Therefore, by presenting the process of viewing and experiencing picture books using AR and QR, the result of the study suggests that the design process of realistic picture books is not just a combination of technology, but a process of expanding children's perception and imagination. This study aims to find out how visual perception is designed differently by analyzing the differences and characteristics of each animation design, focusing on the AR and QR picture book "Where am I?" published by the researcher, and to contribute to the active introduction and development of realistic animation in the field of children's picture books and education.

  • The purpose of this study was to suggest the collection codes and simplification of call numbers for children's easy access to the children's materials. The classification schemes, author tables, expansion of classification schemes, collections codes, classification numbers used in domestic and foreign children's libraries were surveyed through questionnaires and interviewing with librarians. As a result, in foreign children's libraries, it was common practice to shelve children's materials separately into various collections and sub-collections, to mark the spine with collection code and the lead characters of the author's last name, and not to stick with their classification scheme when it comes to highly circulated children's materials such as fiction, picture book, biographies and so on. Also, in domestic children's libraries, it was found that a collection code was used a few and each call number was almost assigned by KDC number. Therefore, it was suggested that the types and codes of collection and sub-collection were divided as non-fiction, fiction, fiction/mystery, fiction/science fiction, picture book, cartoon, language, folks and fairy tales, biographies, legend, concept book, holiday, award, dinosaur, insect, DIY, transportation, tall book, pop-up, story book, board book, reference, magazine, series, new book, video, and audio and were easily expanded by combining age tables or fiction genre. Also, new simplifying methods of building call numbers with collection codes were suggested.

  • This study analyzes whether children's independent picture book reading affects their reading activities and whether the mother-child interaction during this reading improves their reading activities. The study provides basic data and policy implications for developing children's reading ability. Data were collected from a sample of 192 children aged 4 and 5 in Seoul and Anseong, where a survey of their mothers as well as their nursery school teachers was conducted. Variables of interest were analyzed through a correlation analysis and a hierarchical regression analysis, First, children's reading recognized by their mothers was bipolarized as "very high" or "very low". Second, children's reading activity had a significant positive relationship with independent reading, indicating that children active in independent reading were likely to develop their, reading ability. Third, in addition to independent reading, the mother-child interaction had a significant positive effect on children's-reading ability, indicating the importance of the mother's role in developing the child's reading ability.

  • This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.
