  • This study explores whether or not marriage and other family values operate as factors that influence the willingness of women to voluntarily remain ever-single. The study includes as variables the sub-fields of marriage and family values that consist of traditional gender role awareness, freedom in sexual attitude, open outlook on marriage, familism, an acceptance of diverse families, fear of marriage, and assignment of value to extramarital factors. Participants of this study were 259 women in their twenties to forties with no experience of marriage, which were selected from the data used in the Korean Women's Development Institute's Investigation of Single Households(2007). Upon inserting value-related variables and sociodemographic variables into a binomial logistic model for analysis, age, open outlook on marriage, assigned value on extramarital factors, and an acceptance of diverse families were shown to be factors influencing the willingness of women to remain ever-single. That is, as the age spectrum is lower, outlook on marriage is open, more values are granted on the extramarital factors, and the degree of an acceptance of diverse views on family is higher, the chances that women would remain ever-single voluntarily were shown to increase.

  • This paper demonstrated how application of evolutionary knowledge to developmental perspectives enhances understanding of human ontogeny. Evolutionary Developmental Psychology (EDP) explains human behavior through evolutionary principles and focuses on ontogeny rather than phylogeny. In this paper, the authors review concepts of evolution, adaptations, and the processes of evolution from EDP perspectives. The definition and basic assumptions of EDP are introduced, followed by explanations of how evolution happens in ontogeny by looking at developmental systems approaches, concepts of ontogenetic and deferred adaptations, evolution of childhood, and brain plasticity. Possible pathways of evolution in ontogeny are also discussed. Finally, some research methodology for applying EDP to child development is suggested with specific hypotheses and studies.

  • This study compared parents' and teachers' feeding practices with young children. Parents and teachers of children aged 0-3 years were recruited at 24 child care centers to complete surveys regarding their demographic characteristics, parenting styles, and feeding practices with young children. Respondents included 106 parents and 102 teachers. Participants' feeding beliefs and values were found to be related to their parenting style classifications (i.e., Authoritative, Authoritarian, or Permissive), ethnicity, income, and other demographic characteristics. Findings indicate the need for teachers and parents to begin communicating about their longterm goals for a child's development as soon as the child enters care. Understanding the goals and variation of feeding practices used at home and at school can help teachers and parents begin to construct a shared vision for care.

  • This study had two goals: 1) to explore generational differences in traditional family rituals and 2) to investigate the association between family values and family rituals. Using survey data from 500 married men and women in their 20s to 60s, we classified three generations: 1) 1941-1950 birth cohort (aged 59-68), 2) 1951-1970 birth cohort (aged 39-58), and 3) 1971 and later cohort (aged 38 or less). These generations represented post-colonialism, modernization, and the information era in Korea, respectively. The results demonstrated that birth-related traditional family rituals had been maintained across the generations. Ancestor worship was less likely to be observed by later generations. Further, the way in which family values was associated with family rituals differed across the generations, indicating that traditional family values had different influences on everyday family life culture across generations.

Especially, as the number of children who are wanted to go center jumped with additional support the government for child care business, centers have also seen a boost. But as number of child care centers increases rapidly in short period, the quality of centers is more inferior to before. and the space and facility level of many centers don't reach in legal minimum standard. In addition to, when child care centers are reviewed, it tend to be judged by one standard without considering connection with sense of values about child care or philosophy, child's traits, surrounding environment etc. Therefore, it is important to construct environment that can consider children's physical development and behavioral characteristic as well as basic element such thing as protection and support activity for current child care centers. • Despite the fact that Muslims are fast becoming part of the world population, they are the least known group. Moreover, Muslims have been seriously misunderstood and negatively perceived because of several tragic events related to terrorist attacks or wars in the Middle East countries. In this light, the current study examined how parenting values and practices varied by importance of religion, gender, and generation, based on the questionnaire data collected from 312 Muslim fathers and mothers living in Jakarta, Indonesia. The most salient result of this study was that the religion was at the center of everyday lives. The importance of religion in their lives clearly translated in their parenting styles by engaging in religious practices with their children. At the same time, Muslim parents in Indonesia had a high level of expectation for their children's education and making happy family life as well as being faithful as Muslim. This study contributed to promoting cultural sensitivity towards Muslims by examining Indonesian Muslim parents' parenting values and practices.

  • The purpose of this research was to examine variables contributing to the father's role performance. The study has been designed to measure the quantitative(i.e. amount of involvement) and the qualitative(i.e. depth of affection/care) values in their modes of child-rearing practices by taking a clouter look at the father's views on their careers and on offspring. Subjects were 516 fathers of school-age children. Analyzing the factors that determine the quantitative and qualitative aspects of child-rearing practices by the fathers, the sense of fulfillment/value in life is the decisive factor behind the affection(i.e. qualitative) in the child-rearing practices. The resets indicated that the father's perceptions on their careers and on their children constitute the critical factors behind the qualitative and quantitative aspects of child-rearing practices, albeit holding such factors as the parents'working hour or as mothers with outside jobs under control.

  • This study was designed to explore fundamental bases of parental role satisfaction and child-rearing practices by comparing Korean and Yanbian Korean-Chinese mothers who share the same cultural roots but live in societies with different ideology and values. Total of 314 mothers with children aged from three to six years participated in this study:- 160 Korean mothers from two cities in Korea and 154 Korean-Chinese mothers from two cities at YanBian in China. Parental Satisfaction Questionnaires by Hyun (1994) and Child Rearing Practice Measures developed by the researchers were used to measure mothers parental role satisfaction and child rearing practices. The results showed that Korean-Chinese mothers seemed to be more satisfied with their roles as parents than Korean mothers. Additional analyses with socio-economic variables reported that both Korean and Korean-Chinese mothers satisfaction about spousal support were higher and their role conflicts were reduced when the household income was higher. Interestingly, most Korean-Chinese mothers reported to be highly satisfied with spousal support whereas only highly educated Korean mothers seemed to be satisfied with spousal support. In addition, for child-related variables, Korean and Korean-Chinese mothers' parental satisfaction were not affected by their childrens gender or age but when they thought their childrens temperament was difficult, their role-conflict tended to increase.
