Relationship among Perceived Self-Esteem, Social Support, and State Anxiety in Community-dwelling Unmarried Mother raising a Child (재가 양육미혼모가 지각한 자아존중감, 사회적지지, 상태불안 간의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the degrees of and relationships between self-esteem, social support, and state anxiety in community-dwelling unmarried mother raising a child. Descriptive correlational study design was used. Data were collected from 65 participants with self-report questionnaires from May to December, 2011. First, the mean of self-esteem was 3.52, social support 3.49, and state anxiety 2.47 respectively. Second, the correlation between self-esteem and social support was also statistically significant(r=.286, p=.021), the correlation between self-esteem and state anxiety was statistically significant(r=-.780, p=<.001), and the correlation between social support and state anxiety was also statistically significant(r=-.425, p=<.001). Self-esteem for unmarried mother raising a child in the study was confirmed as the primary important concept. Also, the correlation between social support and state anxiety was verified as significant. Therefore, study is needed to develop a nursing intervention program for self-esteem and social support improvement, and state anxiety decrease of unmarried mother raising a child.

The Reinforcement for Policy to Support Child Care Work in Family as the Coping Strategy for Low Fertility Society (저출산 대응: 가족내 자녀양육지원강화)

  • Recently, the low fertility has been deepened because of the increase in women's economic activity, the advancement in standard of living, the rising cost of family maintenance, Therefore master plan for low fertility and aging society which is an overall response strategy for sudden increase in social costs was prepared. The most important point of the second basic plan is the reinforcement in child care support for all families and the balance of work & family. This paper shows the supporting policy for child raising in family and community as reality of policy for low fertility. The paper proposes child care support program(idolbom) as the supporting policy for child raising in family, education for men stimulating father's participation in child rearing, and sharing child care work in community in order to reinforce child care friendly environment.

Korean Divorced Mothers' Experiences with Child Support from Noncustodial Fathers

  • The purpose of this study was to explore Korean divorced mothers' experiences with child support. The data were collected from 17 Korean divorced mothers who were divorced between the years of 2004 and 2009 and were raising at least one minor child. Data were analyzed based on the inductive data analysis method. Most mothers negotiated to receive child support from noncustodial fathers without experiencing much conflict with the fathers at the time of the divorce, but only five mothers received child support at the time of the interviews. The mothers experienced difficulties in receiving child support from the fathers under the child support policy in Korea that treated child support as a personal issue and provided little systemic support for child support. Regarding required parenting agreements, most of the mothers acknowledged the need to have parenting agreements but they still wanted voluntary payment of the child support from the fathers. The results suggest that it is necessary to expand parenting education for divorced parents to encourage voluntary participation in parenting and to improve the child support policy by introducing child support guidelines and enhancing child support collection systems.

A Study on the Educational Effects on Child-Raising Knowledge and Satisfaction with Out-Patient Care of Mothers with Ill-Child (환아 어머니 교육이 육아지식 정도 및 외래간호 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study were to find out the practical way to enlarged child-raising knowledge and to enhance their satisfaction with out-patient care by evaluating how effectively the education is done by nurses for mothers with ill-child and how their satisfaction with out-patient care changed. This study was designed as a Nonequivalent Control Group study. The subjects studied were consisted of the experimental and control group. Each consisted of 50 mothers with ill-child in pediatric department at one university hospital in Seoul. The period of this study is from May 20, 1996 to J one 28, 1996. The first data were collected from both of experimental and control groups in which mothers with ill-child come to the hospital for the first time. After this being done, the experimental group had been educated by the planned program and then the second data were collected from them. On the contrary, as for the control group, there had been no education and the second data were col looted on the same method. The data analysis was done by SPSS program. The results of this study are as follow, 1 The child-raising knowledge level of mothers with education was higher than that of with no education. (t=18.84, df=49, p=0.000) 2. The satisfaction with out-patient care level of mothers with education was higher than that of no education. (t=10.51, df=49, p=0.000) Based on these results, I suggest as follow, 1. The research on the patients and their family should be made not only in pediatric department, but in every out-patient department. 2. For more effective education, it is required for all out-patient nurses to research the education demand of patients and their family. 3. To increase the effect of education, there must be the consultation room in out-patient department. 4. The meetings with the mothers with ill-child of the same illness have to be established and periodical education must be executed. 5. Audio-visual education programs like video tapes are needed to make use of waiting time for the medical treatment. 6. On-line consulting programs are needed.

The Story of Grandmothers' Experience Raising Children (할머니의 양육경험 이야기 : 자녀 세대와 손자녀 세대 양육을 중심으로)

  • The goal of this study is to take a look at grandmothers' experience raising children with a focus on the children's generation and the grandchildren's generation. To do this, we conducted in-depth interviews with three grandmothers who raised their children and their grandchildren. As a result, grandmothers' experience raising children was shown in three categories: change in the raising environment, the raising culture, and the sense of value of raising children. These results suggest that the raising experience of grandmothers who have raised children in the past and are currently raising children again are being changed by the transition in raising experience, raising culture, and sense of value of raising children.

Child-Rearing Practices and Activities of Children Depicted in Traditional Paintings of the Chosun Period (조선시대 회화에 묘사된 아동의 양육과 생활)

  • This study of child-rearing practices and daily activities of children during the Chosun dynasty was conducted through analysis of 91 traditional paintings of the period. Genre, figure, folk, and landscape paintings were included in the analysis. Findings were that child-rearing was strongly focused on the family. Generally, the mother was shown as the primary caregiver of the child. Grandmother, father, and grandfather also played a role in raising the child. The daily activities of the children consisted of helping with household chores, assisting the elderly, doing small jobs, studying, playing, performing for family members, and participating in family rituals and community events. Differences in child-rearing methods and contents of daily activities varied by gender and socio-economic status.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the family relationships of the middle aged women residing in an apartment house in Seoul as a part of a collaborative study on their family life issues. the sampling area was divided into Kangnam and Kangbuk according to the residential location and upper middle group and lower middle group according to the size of the apartment unit. The data were collected from 307 fulltime housewives with at least one child in a junior or senior high school. the self-identity scores of middle-aged wives were found generally somewhat higher and were explained by satisfaction with time use and leisure activities, husband's help with raising children, and feeling after quarrel with husband. most wives felt very comfortable and intimate about their husbands. the relationship between wife and husband was influenced by feeling after quarrel with husband, husband's help with raising children, and satisfaction with leisure activities. Most wives reported stresses in raising children. Help from husband, satisfaction with time use, and financial debt were influencing the level of stress perceived by the wives in raising children.

Present Status, Difficulties and Support Needs of Multi-cultural Families Raising Children under 3 Years Old Enrolled at Child Care and Education Centers (어린이집 재원 다문화 가정 영아의 양육 현황과 어려움 및 지원요구)

  • Objective: This study intended to analyze parenting characteristics, difficulties and support needs of multi-cultural families that had children under 3 years old, in order to develop their supporting resources. Methods: This study performed semi-structured interviews with 7 mothers from multi-cultural families that had their young children enrolled at child care and education centers in Gyeonggi Do. The interview data transcribed were analyzed using the successive contents analysis, and led to 4 themes and 12 sub-themes. Results: First, the mothers from multi-cultural families were married without understanding the Korean language and culture. Second, the multi-cultural mothers didn't properly respond to their children's needs in interaction and language aspects. As a result, the multi-cultural support centers and child care and education centers gave help to them. Third, in the view of the difficulties facing mothers, parenting problems caused by the lack of information concerning child education, the biased burden of parenting, and the different parenting values of Korean families were all expressed by the mothers. Fourth, regarding support needs, providing individual professional support for children and child-raising support for mothers, customized language and employment support for mothers and parenting education for fathers and family education on multi-culturalism are needed. Conclusion/Implications: Suggestions for decreasing the difficulties facing multi-cultural families that had children under 3 years old were discussed.

The Study of Child-Rearing Burden and Psychological Well-Being of Grandmothers Raising Preschooler Grandchildren - The Mediating Effect of Social Supports (손자녀 양육 조모의 양육부담감에 따른 심리적 복지-사회적 지지의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of social supports on the relationship between child-rearing burden and psychological well-being among grandmothers. Data was collected from 249 grandmothers raising preschooler grandchildren who live in Gwangju by self-reported questionnaires. The method used for data analysis was structural equation modeling analysis using SPSS 22.0 and Amos 22.0. The results of this study revealed that child-rearing burden influenced social supports of grandmothers. Social supports influenced psychological well-being of grandmothers. Child-rearing burden influenced psychological well-being of grandmothers. The structural equation modeling analysis indicated that social supports partially mediated the relationship between child-rearing burden and psychological well-being.

Grandmother-Adult Child Solidarity and Grandmother's Child-rearing Role: Moderated Mediation Effect of Caregiving Satisfaction and Relation with Grandchild (조모-성인자녀 결속도와 조모역할수행 간의 관계에서 돌봄만족과 손주관계의 조절된 매개효과)

  • This study examined how the relationship between grandmother-adult child solidarity, caregiving satisfaction, and grandmother's child-rearing role varies according to the relation with the grandchild. Mediation effects and moderated mediation effects were analyzed to investigate the relationship between these variables. The participants were 295 grandmothers raising preschool-aged grandchildren in the Seoul and Gyeonggi areas. Data was analyzed using SPSS 23.0 and PROCESS macro, performing correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis. The statistical significance of the indirect effect was examined using a bootstrapping procedure. The results are as follows. First, grandmother-adult child solidarity directly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role. Second, grandmother-adult child solidarity indirectly affects the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction. Third, the direct and indirect effects of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role are moderated by the relation with the grandchild. The direct effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on grandmother's child-rearing role was therefore shown to be significant on the maternal grandmother. Fourth, the indirect effect of grandmother-adult child solidarity on the grandmother's child-rearing role through caregiving satisfaction was shown to be significant on the paternal grandmother. Based on the results of this study, we discussed ways to strengthen the capacity of co-parenting between grandparents and adult children.
