Vocational Preference Inventory of Korean College Students with Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the association of vocational interest and personality with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Methods: Four hundred and fourteen college students in Gyeonggi-do completed Vocational Preference Inventory L form and a questionnaire and collected data were analyzed by R program. Results: The percentage of subjects who responded that they had at least one contributing factor for TMD was significantly different among 27 two-letter Holland codes (p<0.05). The two-letter Holland codes of which the first-letter was social (S) (S artistic [A], S investigative [I], S realistic [R], S conventional [C], S enterprising [E]) or C (CE, CS, CA, CI) had tendency of having the relatively higher prevalence of symptoms and contributing factors for TMD. Among 6 one-letter Holland codes, the prevalence of a symptom of frequent fatigue in the jaw and a habit of gum chewing showed the significant difference (p<0.05). E code seemed to have lower prevalence of a symptom of frequent fatigue in the jaw than other codes. S code appeared to use chewing gum more frequently than other codes. High scorers on emotional instability showed the significantly higher prevalence of TMD symptoms (p<0.05) and contributing factors for TMD (p<0.001) than low scorers. Furthermore, high scorers on emotional instability had significantly higher mean scales of the number of positive answers of TMD symptoms (p<0.01) and of contributing factors for TMD (p<0.001) than low scorers. Conclusions: Symptoms and contributing factors for TMD were related to emotional instability. Vocational Preference Inventory L form might be utilized in assessing emotional factors of persons with TMD symptoms.

균형측 교합장애가 저작근 활성도 및 과로에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (THE INFLUENCE OE BALANCING SIDE OCCLUSAL INTERFERENCE ON THE MASTICATORY MUSCLE ACTIVITY AND CONDYLAR PATH)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of balancing interference on the activity of masticatory muscles and condylar path. Eight dental students of Won Kwang University without any symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and occlusal interferences, were selected for this study, The balancing interference was provided by construction and cementation of cast metal crowns on the upper and lower first molars. For the measurement of muscle activity, bioelectric processor (EM2, Myotronic Res., Inc., U.S.A.) was used and for the condular path, computerized electronic pantograph (Pantronics, Denar Corp., U.S.A.) was used and the myographic recordings were taken bilaterally from the anterior temporal, masseter and digastric muscles on rest position and on functions. These experimental procedures were done before cementation of experimental crown, three days after cementation of experimental crown, one week after, two weeks after and then one week after removal of experimental crown. The results are as follows: 1. The PRI score was increased at three days after application of balancing interference, and decreased at two weeks after. 2. Three subjects showed mild symptom of temporomandibular disorder at three or four days after application of interference, but the symptom was subsided in one or two weeks after application of interference. 3. One week after application of balancing interference, the activity of ipsilateral anterior temporal muscle in four subjects was decreased on gum chewing at experimental site. 4. Three days after application of balancing interference, the activity of ipsilateral anterior temporal muscle in three subjects was increased on gum chewing at non-experimental site. 5. The influence of balancing interference on the activity of anterior temporal, masseter and gigastric muscle was not prominent.

혼합치열기 어린이에서 mutans streptococci에 대한 자일리톨 껌의 항균효과에 관한 연구 (THE ANTICARIOGENIC EFFECTS OF XYLITOL ON MUTANS STREPTOCOCCI IN CHILDREN WITH MIXED DENTITION)

  • Xylitol 껌의 mutans streptococci(MS)에 대한 항균효과를 평가하기 위하여 6세${\sim}$11세 사이의 혼합치열기 어린이 62명을 선정하였다. 4개월 동안 1개의 xylitol 껌을 하루 3회 씹는군, 2개의 xylitol 껌을 하루 3회 씹는 군과 xylitol 껌을 씹지 않는 대조군으로 나누어 하루 3번 식후 최소 5분간 껌을 씹게 한 후 1개월 간격으로 자극성타액을 채취하여 선택배지(mitis salivarius kanamicin bacitracin agar)에 배양한 후 MS 군락 수의 감소를 평가하였다. 1회 1개의 xylitol 껌을 씹는 군에서는 MS의 감소를 보이지 않았고, 1회 2개의 xylitol 껌을 씹는 군에서 4개월째 MS의 유의한 감소를 보였다(P < 0.05). 따라서 혼합치열기 어린이의 경우 하루 3회, 총 10g 정도의 xylitol을 4개월 이상 꾸준히 사용하였을 경우 치아우식증에 대한 예방효과가 있을 것으로 사료된다.

경기도 지역 대학생의 측두하악장애증상에 관한 역학적 연구 (An Epidemiologic Study of Symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders in Korean College Students)

  • 측두하악장애증상과 이와 관련될 수 있는 기여요인들의 유병율을 알아보고자 경기도 지역 대학에 재학중인 학생 460명을 대상으로 2006년 9월부터 12월까지 설문조사를 실시하여 측두하악장애증상의 증상별 빈도, 성별, 연령별 양상에 대해 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 전체 대상자 중 한 가지 이상의 측두하악장애 주관적 증상을 가진 자는 80.6%였다. 2. 가장 높은 빈도를 보인 증상은 두통(45.7%)이고 그 다음이 관절음(43.5%)이었는데 두 가지 모두 남녀간의 유의차는 없었다. 3. 20대 남자 연령이 증가할수록 급성 부정교합 증상 비율이 낮았으며, 20대 여자 연령이 증가할수록 저작시나 말할 때의 악관절부 동통 증상의 발생빈도가 증가하였다. 4. 여자가 남자보다 높은 빈도를 나타낸 증상으로는 개구시 악관절부 동통, 저작시나 말할 때의 악관절부 동통, 턱 피곤함, 급성 부정교합 증상이 있고, 여자가 남자보다 높은 빈도를 나타낸 기여요인으로는 턱 괴기, 스트레스, 껌씹기, 불면증, 이악물기가 있다. 5. 기여요인과 측두하악장애의 주관적 증상은 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났는데 그 중에서도 이악물기, 불면증, 편측저작, 턱 괴기, 스트레스에서 유의성이 높았다. 6. 측두하악장애의 주관적 증상은 보통 성격과 관련성이 높았다.

정상교합자와 III급 부정교합자의 저작근 근전도에 관한 연구 (AN ELECTROMYOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION OF MASTICATORY MUSCLES IN NORMAL OCCLUSION AND CLASS III MALOCCLUSION)

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences of EMG activity of the masticatory muscles between normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion during various jaw functions. 46 subjects of 18.4-25.7 years were employed in this study: 26 subjects were normal occlusions, and 20 subjects were Class III malocclusions. The EMG data from the anterior and posterior temporal, anterior and posterior masseter muscles in both sides as mandibular elevators and supra-hyoid muscle group (close to the anterior belly of digastric muscle in right side) as mandibular depressor were recorded with the Medelec MS 25 electromyographic machine. The EMG recordings were analyzed during mandibular rest position, maximal biting, mastication with chewing gum, and swallowing of peanuts. All data were recorded and statistically processed. 1. The maximal mean amplitude of the anterior temporal muscle was stronger significantly in Class III malocclusion than in normal occlusion, and then the posterior temporal was weaker during mandibular rest position. 2. The maximal mean amplitudes in the anterior and posterior temporal muscles and the anterior masseter muscle of Class III malocclusion was weaker significantly than that of normal occlusion during maximal biting. 3. During mastication of the chewing gum, the maximal mean amplitudes of Class III malocclusion was weaker significantly than normal occlusion in the anterior and posterior temporal muscles of the working side, and the duration of Class III malocclusion was longer in the anterior temporal muscles of both aides, and the posterior temporal and the anterior masseter muscle of the balancing side. There were significant increasings of the latency in balancing anterior temporal, working posterior temporal muscles and supra-hyoid muscle group of Class III malocclusion. The silent period durations was 16.36 ms in Class III malocclusion while 10.76 ms in normal occlusion, which was statistically different (P < 0.05). 4. At swallowing of peanuts, the maximal mean amplitude of Class malocclusion was weaker significantly in the posterior temporal muscle than that of normal occlusion. There was no significant difference of duration between normal occlusion and Class III malocclusion. 5 The muscle activities of Class III malocclusion had a tendency of decrease less than normal occlusion. And then the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and anterior masseter muscles in Class III malocclusion showed the tendency of the increase more than other muscles of Class III malocclusion.

교합 유도 형태에 따른 저작근 활성도에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Masticatory Muscle Activity According to the Occlusal Guidance Patterns)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the muscle activity of the group function occlusion and the changed canine guided occlusion using EM2. In this study, 13 subjects with group function occlusion and without temporomandibular disorders were selected, each subject was changed to the canine guided occlusion by forming the lingual ramps in the upper canines with light curing composite resin. The muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle were recorded in the group function occlusion and immediately, one week, and two weeks after changing to the canine guided occlusion under the condition of maximum voluntary clenching in centric occlusion, lateral excursion, and during gum chewing. The results were as follows: 1. In case of maximum voluntary clenching in centric occlusion, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side didn't show any difference immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal masseter muscle of working and balancing side were increased significantly, and two weeks after changing to it the muscle activities of the masseter muscle were increased significantly in comparison with the group function occlusion. 2. In case of maximum voluntary clenching in lateral excursion, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side were reduced significantly immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal muscle of balancing side and of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working side were reduced significantly, and 2 weeks after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working side were reduced significantly in comparison with the .group function occlusion. 3. During gum chewing, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side didn't show any difference immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the masseter muscle of working and balancing side were increased significantly, and two weeks after changing to it only the muscle activities of masseter muscle of working side were increased significantly.

자일리톨 섭취에 따른 Streptococcus mutans의 글루칸 생성관련 유전자 발현 억제효과 (INHIBITION OF GLUCAN SYNTHESIS RELATED GENE EXPRESSION OF STREPTOCOCCUS MUTANS BY XYLITOL TREATMENT)

  • 본 연구에서는 장기적인 자일리톨의 섭취가 Streptococcus mutans의 대표적인 독성인자 중 하나인 글루칸 생성에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위하여 글루칸 합성효소인 glucosyltansferase의 mRNA 발현을 실시간 역전사 중합효소 연쇄반응을 통해 평가하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 24개월 동안 자일리톨껌을 섭취한 군에서 타액 내 Streptococcus mutans의 colony 수는 통계적으로 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.05). 2. 비수용성 글루칸 합성에 관여하는 유전자인 gtfB, gtfC의 발현은 자일리톨껌을 섭취한 군에서 시간이 지남에 따라 유의 하게 감소하였다(p<0.05). 특히 gtfB의 발현은 12개월과 24개월째 대조군에 비하여 통계적으로 유의하게 낮았고, gtfC의 발현은 24개월째 대조군에 비하여 통계적으로 유의하게 낮았다(p<0.05). 3. 수용성 글루칸 합성에 관여하는 유전자인 gtfD의 발현 역시 자일리톨껌을 섭취한 군에서 시간이 지남에 따라 유의하게 감소하였다(p<0.05). 또한 gtfD의 발현은 12개월과 24개월째 대조군에 비하여 통계적으로 유의하게 낮았다(p<0.05). 이상의 결과들을 종합해 보았을 때, 자일리톨의 섭취는 구강 내 Streptococcus mutans의 글루칸 합성 관련 유전자들의 발현을 억제시킴으로써 Streptococcus mutans의 수적인 감소를 가져오는 것으로 생각된다.

숙시닐화에 의한 각시가자미껍질 젤라틴의 탄닌산과의 반응성 개선 (Improvement on the Reactivity Properties with Tannic Acid of Yellowfin Sole Skin Gelatin by Succinylation)

  • 어류껍질 젤라틴의 탄닌산과의 반응성을 개선하여 청정제 및 chewing gum base 등으로 유효 이용할 목적으로 각시가자미껍질 젤라틴의 숙시닐화를 시도하여 탄닌산과의 반응특성에 대하여 검토하였다. 각시가자미껍질 젤라틴의 숙시닐화는 succinic anhydride의 농도가 10%까지는 직선적으로 증가하였고, 그 이상의 농도에서는 거의 변화가 없었다. 본 실험에서는 젤라틴에 대하여 15%에 해당하는 succinic anhydride로 숙시닐화시켜 탄닌산과의 반응성을 살펴 보았고, 이 젤라틴의 숙시닐화 정도는 약 80%이었다. 등전점은 숙시닐화 어류껍질 젤라틴의 경우 4.08로 대조 어류껍질 젤라틴의 5.54에 비하여 감소하였고, 일반성분 및 아미노산 조성은 두 젤라틴이 유사하였다. 용액의 pH가 숙시닐화 어류점질 젤라틴의 경우 4.0부근에서, 대조 어류껍질 젤라틴의 경우 4.8 부근에서 젤라틴 및 탄닌산의 침전율이 최대이었다. 젤라틴 농도는 젤라틴 침전율의 경우 숙시닐화에 관계없이 농도가 증가할수록 감소하였고, 탄닌산의 침전율의 경우 탄닌산에 대하여 숙시닐화 젤라틴은 $2{\sim}4$배, 대조 젤라틴은 $2{\sim}3$배로 첨가한 것이 최대이었다. 젤라틴 및 탄닌산의 침전율은 에탄올의 존재에 의해서는 영향을 받았으나, sucrose의 존재에 의해서는 거의 영향을 받지 않았다.

  • 물성적(物性的) 특성(待性)을 다르게 제조한 츄잉검을 가지고 Rheometer를 사용하여 저작단계별로 초기(初期)에 puncture test, 중기(中期)에 penetration test, 후기(後期)에 penetration test 및 compression test를 하여 기계적(機械約) 물성(物性)을 측정 하였고 같은 시료로 훈련(訓練)된 파넬과 소비자(消費者) 관능검사를 실시하여 관능적(官能的) 물성(物性) 및 기호성(嗜好性)을 측정하였다. 이들 측정 된 물성값으로 기계적(機械約) 물성간(物性間)의 상관관계와 관능적(官能的) 물성간(物性間)의 상관관계를 구하여 물성간(物性間)의 유사성(類似性)과 상관성을 조사하였다. 기계적(機械的) 물성(物性)에서 초기(初期)의 puncture work와 puncture force, 중기(中期)의 hardness와 work, 후기(後期)의 hardness와 work 및 adhesion work와 adhesion force는 각각 유사(類似)한 물성(物性)으로 해석되었으며 후기(後期)의 yield force와 slope는 hardness와, springiness와 adhesion force는 slope와 상관관계가 높았다. 관능적(官能的) 물성(物性)에서 소비자(消費者)와 훈련(訓練)된 파넬의 관능검사 결과(結果)는 거의 일치(一致)하였고 소비자의 경우 초기(初期)의 stiffness가 중기(中期), 후기(後期)의 firmness와 상관관계가 높았다. 훈련(訓練)된 파넬의 경우 후기(後期)의 stiffness는firmness와, cohesion은 lift와 각각 유사(類似)한 물성(物性)으로 해석되었으며 adhesion은 firmness와 부(負)의 상관관계를 나타내었다.

  • 501 preschool children from 4 to 6 years were examined for their salivary reductase activity and caries experience by Resazurin Disc Test and dental examination respectively. We asked the parents about their children's oral hygiene habits, between-meal eating habits, and physical exercise habits by the questionnaire. Toothbrushing frequency had negative relation to salivary reductase activity and caries experience. Caries experience was low when parents did toothbrushing for children, when teeth were brushed at bedtime, and when fluoride toothpastes were used. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were high in bread & cookies group, chocolates & candies group, milk & soft drink group, and fruits & vegetables group in order. Caries experience was high in case of irregular between-meal eating. Sweet food eating frequency had positive relation to caries experience. Caries activity was low in case of eating homemade non-sweet between-meals. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were low when gum-chewing frequency was high. Salivary reductase activity and caries experience were high when the amount of physical exercise was low.
