The purpose of this study was to investigate the errors in science inquiry research reports written by students who won the encouragement award at the National Science Fair, and analyze the frequency of error types by school levels. The framework for analysis was constructed based on the table of contents of the students' science inquiry research reports, and the reports were analyzed for errors in six stages: Research question/hypothesis, prior research, experimental procedure, results, conclusions, and references. The study identified several types of errors at each stage, such as unreasonable research questions and wrong hypotheses in the research question/hypothesis stage, and limited considerations under certain conditions and selection of inappropriate experimental instruments in the experimental procedure stage. The study found that the frequency ratio of experimental procedure error was the highest across all school levels, and the order of errors varied by school level. Frequency ratio of error types of school level was: in the elementary school students' reports, errors were analyzed in the order of experimental procedure (36.88%), prior research (17.02%), conclusions (16.31%), research question/hypothesis (13.48%); In the middle school students' reports, experimental procedure (42.86%), conclusions (20.00%), prior research (14.28%), results (11.43%), research question/hypothesis (10.01%); In the high school students' reports, experimental procedure (45.16%), research question/ hypothesis (16.13%), conclusions (16.13%), and prior research (11.83%). The findings could be used to guide teachers in helping students conduct scientific inquiry research or write reports.
This study is examined for the effects of question generating strategy and feedback(teacher feedback and student peer reviews) on science achievement, self-efficiency and perception of the class in the middle school. Three classes of middle school 1st grade in a city were sampled for the study. The students in comparative group took traditional lessons and solved questions presented on worksheets distributed by a teacher. On the other hand, the students in the experimental groups 1 and 2 generated and solved questions by themselves after traditional lessons and then participated in the activity with peer's feedback and teacher's feedback, respectively. A self-efficiency test had been conducted before the treatments and the various tests such as achievement, self-efficiency and the perception of the class were carried out after treatments. The statistical results were analysed by ANCOVA, MANCOVA and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: First, there was significant difference between the control and experimental groups in the science achievement test (p<.01). But there was no significant difference between the experimental groups (p>.05). Second, both of the experimental groups showed enhanced self-efficiency compared with comparative group (p<.01). In sub-areas of self-efficiency, there were also meaningful results in the area of self-efficiency for control experimental group 1(p<.01), and in the area of difficulty preferences for experimental group 2 (p<.01). Third, the experimental group 1, given teacher's feedback, showed more positive perception of the class than the experimental group 2 that was given peer's feedback (p<.01).
In this study, we analyzed verbal interactions in small group science learning using smart devices by the level of prior achievement. Four heterogeneous groups at a coed high school in Seoul participated. Verbal interactions during small group science learning were audio- and video-taped, transcribed, and analyzed. Verbal interactions were analyzed at the levels of a turn and an interaction unit. The results revealed that the frequencies of verbal interactions were high in task category, especially at information explanation, information question, and reflection on standards subcategories. Furthermore, the frequencies of high-level students at direction explanation, reflection on standards and progress subcategories were higher than those of low-level students, and the frequencies of low-level students at direction question and information explanation subcategories were higher than their counterpart. In the analyses of the interaction units, the frequencies in symmetric elaborated interaction were high, especially at cumulative and evaluative subcategories.
In this study, clicker, also known as classroom response system, was applied to the chemistry method course at the university in Gyeongbuk, and preservice chemistry teachers' perceptions of clicker were surveyed. Before starting lecture, operation and class application of clickers were introduced to preservice teachers, and then 4-5 questions were presented to them in most classes during the term. After preservice teachers were asked to answer the questions, lecturer gave feedback based on the class answer distribution. Questions presented to preservice teachers were recall and/or understanding questions on learning contents, opinion questions, and questions about muddiest point. At the end of semester, preservice teachers were asked to rate their perception of clikers in terms of likert scale and essay type. They had positive perceptions of clicker use in aspects of cognitive effects, affective effects and media characteristics. They preferred conceptual understanding questions and monitoring questions among 8 clicker question types. Some cases using clickers in lecture and educational implications were also included.
This study is conducted to analyze the questioning styles of the parts of chemistry in 17 middle school science textbooks in terms of frequency, types, and placement of questions. The instrument was the Textbook Questioning Strategies Assessment Instrument (TQSAI) developed by the Cooperative Teacher Preparation Program, University of California in 1975. An averaged ratio of questionings/sentences (Q/S) of seventeen textbooks was 13.6% varying from 6.8% to 19.7%. Various question types were used in titles, early and middle steps in the sections except late steps. The comprehending questions were most frequent in the types of inquiry courses and the focusing questions were most frequent in the characteristics of instructional courses. The percentages of empirical questions for the total numbers of questions were slightly larger than nonempirical questions with values of 54.2% and 45.8%, respectively.
The purpose of this study is to develop the workshop to improve teachers' questions considering the context of discourse. Four pre-service science teachers in the fourth grade participated in the study. Pre-service science teachers participated in the workshop. The characteristics of their reflection on the question considering the context of discourse were analyzed. Pre-service science teachers considered the types of questions they learned in the workshop during the reflection. But the affective domains of students were rarely considered. Whether the students respond was considered as an important factor of reflection. The questions were evaluated based on the frequencies. A single question without context was reflected on. Various PCK elements were not considered comprehensively. Based on the results, the practical implications to develop a program for improving teacher expertise related to the questions considering the context of discourse were discussed.
The key riboflavin synthesis genes are located immediately downstream of luxG in the lux operon from Photobacterium leiognathi. It is of interest that a site capable of forming a rho-independent terminator does not appear to be present between luxG and ribE in our previous data. These results raise the question of whether the transcription of lux and rib genes is integrated or not. In order to answer the question, in vivo transcriptional assay and Southern blot were examined. These studies demonstrate that neither transcriptional terminator nor promoter site is present in the intergenic region between of lux and rib genes as well as that the riboflavin genes are single copy in a chromosome of Photobacterium leiognathi.
Effective teaching and learning is a continuous process of monitoring and re-organization of teaching method, so to benefit both students and educators. Reflective journal writing is an effective method for students to reflect on their learning experience about a new concept or subject taught and at the same time enables educators to improve on their academic skills. In the present paper, we have examined and evaluated the effectiveness of the Uncritical Inference Test (UIT) that was conducted in our basic organic chemistry course through a systematic network built based on students’ reflective writing. From the data analysis, the UIT has benefited students in three dimensions, namely cognitive, affective and group learning domains. Moreover, the UIT activity instilled an active learning environment in organic chemistry classroom and deeper learning among chemistry students as shown in the collected data. In future, this activity could be adapted as a teaching method to enhance students’ critical thinking skills and question-asking capability in other teaching courses.
The Z-DNA domain of human ADAR1 ($Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$) produces B-Z junction DNA through preferential binding to the CG-repeat segment and destabilizing the neighboring AT-rich region. However, this study could not answer the question of how many base-pairs in AT-rich region are destabilized by binding of $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$. Thus, we have performed NMR experiments of $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$ to the longer DNA duplex containing an 8-base-paired (8-bp) CG-repeat segment and a 12-bp AT-rich region. This study revealed that $Z{\alpha}_{ADAR1}$ preferentially binds to the CG-repeat segment rather than AT-rich region in a long DNA and then destabilizes at least 6 base-pairs in the neighboring AT-rich region for efficient B-Z transition of the CG-repeat segment.

Questioning forms an integral part of most strategies for effective teaching when the class consists of difficult content. Science including chemistry is usually content-rich, but difficult to understand without supporting lab experiments, subsidiary visual materials and model kits. Engaging the attention and interest of students in such a subject, therefore, is the key to the success of a daily lesson in the classroom. However, generating meaningful questions requires a certain level of information and metacognitive skills on the part of the teacher. The purpose of this study was to find out the framework of effective teachers' questioning with a large group in chemistry class: how teachers used questioning to engage their students in such a big class, to identify a variety of forms of feedback provided by students and to develop a model of question-inducing strategies. We investigated the teachers' recognition of their questioning and the students' recognition of teachers' questioning by surveying over 82 teachers and 434 students in Korea. The survey findings show that the questionnaire can be categorized into four elements: the theme of the teachers' questions (T), students' inquiries (I), methods of teachers' questioning (M) and encouragement of students (E). These elements can be analyzed and sub-categorized to find out which elements are effective in good questioning, even though the elements are interwoven tetrahedrally.
