  • The effectiveness of physiological or chemical acid - alkali solution was investigated as the method to control pH value of nutrient solution in hydroponics dynamically. Lettuces were cultivated using NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ as physiological acid and NaNO$_3$ as physiological alkali or H$_2$SO$_4$ as chemical acid in dynamic control system. The pH of nutrient solution was controlled satisfactorily in the range of pH 5.5-6.5, regardless of treatments. Chemical acid changed pH of solution faster than chemical acid when supplied to the nutrient solution. Any of them did not show any harmful symptom. It is recommended that chemical acid is preferred during the growing stage and physiological acid like as NH$_4$H$_2$PO$_4$ is preferred from several days before harvest stage.

  • A new concept ??soft solution processing?? has been introduced to fabricate advanced solid state materials in an economical, environmentally friendly, and energy and material efficient way. The prepared films show the desired and prospective properties despite of low temperature synthesis and no post-synthesis annealing. Successful examples demonstrate that soft solution processing is capable of preparing advanced materials with planned properties through the easy control of reaction conditions in a suitable aqueous solution in a single synthetic step without huge energy consumption and without any sophisticated equipment.

  • It is important in dentistry that the provisional cement should be cleaned thoroughly from the crown before definitive cementation. The provisional cement has been removed by physical means such as curette, scaler, pumice, or sand-blasting with alumina particles, which is time-consuming, irritating, tedious, even causing crack. To avoid such troubles occurring through such physical cleaning means, the chemical solutions for dissolving the provisional cement remaining in dental crown were prepared, and solubilizing power of the solutions was measured and compared. The solution composed of MEA, NaOH, chloride chemicals ($CHCl_3$, $CCl_4$, $CH_2Cl_2$), surfactants (Igepal, Tween20), chelating agent (EDTA), and Ethyl cellosolve was most effective for dissolving the provisional cement.

  • We have prepared new water-swollen chitosan-$Ag^+$ complex membranes and studied their permeation and separation behavior for propylene and propane gases. The $Ag^+$ containing chitosan complex membranes were prepared from chitosan and $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. The $AgNO_3$ and water content in the membrane were controlled by adjusting $AgNO_3$ concentration of casting solution. The permeation properties of propylene and propane were investigated as a function of $AgNO_3$ concentration, and various operation conditions. High permeability of above 17 barrer and high selectivity of above 170 could be obtained with the membranes prepared from 3 M $AgNO_3$ aqueous solution. Periodic regeneration test confirmed these membranes could be very useful for the separation of propylene/propane and other olefin/paraffin separation.

  • Chemical equilbria of nickel chloride in HCl solution at $25\;{^{\circ}C}$ were analyzed by considering chemical equilibria, mass and charge balance equations. The activity coefficients of solutes were calculated by using Bromley equation. The necessary thermodynamic properties, such as the equilibrium constant for the formation of Ni$Cl^+$ at zero ionic strength and interaction parameter, were evaluated by applying Bromley equation to the stability constant data reported in the literature. It was found that most nickel exists as $Ni^{2+}$ in HCl solution up to 5 molality HCl. The pH values of Ni$Cl_2-HCl-H_2O$ system at $25\;{^{\circ}C}$ calculated in this study agreed well with the pH values measured by employing pH meter.

  • Colloidal solutions of crystalline PbSe nanoparticles have been synthesized by hot solution chemical process using PbO in oleic acid and tributylphosphine (TBP) bonded selenium. The use of TBP as a capping agent along with oleic acid gives a very good yield (around 10% at 180 ${^{\circ}C}$) with an average diameter of particle of about < 6.6 nm. The effects of temperature on size and production yield of PbSe quantum dots are studied. Xray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and UV/VIS/NIR absorption spectroscopy were used to characterize the samples.

  • Mesoporous $TiO_2$ granules were prepared by spray pyrolysis using nano-sized titania particles which were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and they were evaluated as the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells. To enhance the cell efficiency, nanoparticles within granules were chemically interconnected by adding titanium ethoxide (TEOT) to colloidal spray solution. The resulting titania particles had anatase phase without forming rutile. $TiO_2$ granules obtained showed about 400 nm in size, the specific surface area of $74-77m^2/g$, and average pore size of 13-17 nm. The chemical modification of $TiO_2$ granules by adding TEOT initially to the colloidal spray solution was proved to be an effective way in terms of increasing both the light scattering within photoanode and the lifetimes of photo-excited electrons. Consequently, the light-harvesting efficiency of TEOT-modified granules (${\eta}=6.72%$) was enhanced about 14% higher than primitive nanoparticles.

  • The chemical conversion coating formed on magnesium alloy investigated for low cost and harmless in environment by using the colloidal silica as the main component. The film formed in 298 K is thick, the film, which was thought combination of Si-O, was formed. The film formed in 313 K is thinner than that in 298 K. The quantity of film formed at high temperature such as 333 K and 353 K is smaller than dissolved quantity. At the anodic polarization experiment, corrosion resistance in sealing by hot water after chemical conversion treatment in basic solution condition get worse than that in comparison with basic solution condition. In salt spray test, the ratio of black rust on specimen that did not conducted chemical conversion treatment was five times or more compared with those of chemical conversion treated specimen. The film thickness of chemical conversion coating produced by alkali treatment process is thinner than in comparison with that of specimen produced in basic chemical conversion treatment solution condition. It is thought, however, that it showed good corrosion resistance during salt spray test because the area of microcracks is small.
