As a trend toward multi-product batch processes is increasing in Chemical Process Industry (CPI), multi-product batch scheduling has been actively studied. But the optimal production scheduling problems for multi-product batch processes are known as NP-complete. Recently Ku and Karimi [5] have studied Simulated Annealing(SA) and Jung et al.[6] have developed Modified Simulated Annealing (MSA) method which was composed of two stage search algorithms for scheduling of batch processes with UIS and NIS. Jung et al.[9] also have studied the Common Intermediate Storage(CIS) policy which have accepted as a high efficient intermediate storage policy. It can be also applied to pipeless mobile intermediate storage pacilities. In spite of these above researches, there have been no contribution of scheduling of CIS policy for chemical batch processes. In this paper, we have developed another MSA for scheduling chemical batch processes with searching the suitable control parameters for CIS policy and have tested the this algorithm with randomly generated various scheduling problems. From these tests, MSA is outperformed to general SA for CIS batch process system.

Background: This study aimed to assess the possibility of benzene exposure in workers of a Korean semiconductor manufacturing company by reviewing the issued patents. Methods: A systematic patent search was conducted with the Google "Advanced Patent Search" engine using the keywords "semiconductor" and "benzene" combined with all of the words accessed on January 24, 2016. Results: As a result of the search, we reviewed 75 patent documents filed by a Korean semiconductor manufacturing company from 1994 to 2010. From 22 patents, we found that benzene could have been used as one of the carbon sources in chemical vapor deposition for capacitor; as diamond-like carbon for solar cell, graphene formation, or etching for transition metal thin film; and as a solvent for dielectric film, silicon oxide layer, nanomaterials, photoresist, rise for immersion lithography, electrophotography, and quantum dot ink. Conclusion: Considering the date of patent filing, it is possible that workers in the chemical vapor deposition, immersion lithography, and graphene formation processes could be exposed to benzene from 1996 to 2010.

We search for an appropriate initial adsorption coordination of precursor on surface by using genetic algorithm (GA) and density functional theory. SiH₄ and Al(CH₃)₃ as precursor, and OH-terminated Si (001) as surface are used for this study. Selection, crossover, and mutation as hyperparameters of GA are applied to search for the adsorption coordination of the precursors on the surface as a function of generation. Bond distances between precursors and the surface are used to explain the adsorption behavior of the precursors.

Optimization methodologies have been proposed of find the best environment-friendly recycling pathways of plastic materials based on life-cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The main difficulty in conducting this optimization study is that multiple environmental burdens have to be considered simultaneously as the cost functions. Instead of generating conservative Pareto or noninferior solutions following multi-objective optimization approaches, we have proposed some practical criteria on how to combine the different environmental burdens into a single measure. The obtained single objective optimization problem can then be solved by conventional nonlinear programming techniques or, more effectively, by a tree search method based on decision flows. The latter method reduces multi-dimensional optimization problems to a set of one-dimensional problems in series. It is expected the suggested tree search approach can be applied to many LCA studies as a new promising optimization tool.

This paper presents an application of heuristic harmony search (HS) optimization algorithm for the identification of linear continuous time-delay system from step response. Identification model is first-order plus dead time (FOPDT), which describes a linear monotonic process quite well in most chemical processes and HAVC process and is often sufficient for PID controller tuning. This recently developed HS algorithm is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. The effectiveness of the identification method has been demonstrated through a number of simulation examples.

As a result of screening search for biologically active substances to weed seeds among higher plants, MeOH extract from Rhathiolepis ovata Briat was found to inhibit germination of test weeds considerably. In the course of purifying the active substances, pinoresinol which showed very similar behavior with the active fraction on various chromatographies, was isolated from the same source, spectrally identified and bioassayed. Pinoresinol exhibited germination inhibitory activity against the common purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) only ; the inhibitory effect was about 55% at concentration of 5 mg/ml.

To search germination inhibitors in higher plants, first of all, some experiments containing selection of test weed seeds and effects of solvents and surfactants for bioassay establishment were conducted. Then MeOH-extracts of 45 plants were assayed for germination inhibition activities against Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv, Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop., Cyperus iria L., Portulaca oleracea L. and Oenothera lamarckiana Ser. seeds. Among them extracts from Rhathiolepis ovata Briat and Picea abies (L.) Karst showed strong inhibitory effect (60-90% inhibition) on the germination of tested weed seeds at 5000 ppm. On the other hand, the extract from Youngia sonchifolia Max stimulated the germination and growth of tested weeds.
