Cobalt coated tungsten carbide-cobalt composite powder has been prepared through wet chemical reduction method. The cobalt sulfate solution was converted to the cobalt chloride then the cobalt hydroxide. The tungsten carbide powders were added in to the cobalt hydroxide, the cobalt hydroxide was reduced and coated over tungsten carbide powder using hypo-phosphorous acid. Both the cobalt and the tungsten carbide phase peaks were evident in the tungsten carbide-cobalt composite powder by X-ray diffraction. The average particle size measured via scanning electron microscope, particle size analysis was around 380 nm and the thickness of coated cobalt was determined to be 30~40 nm by transmission electron microscopy.
A new convenient method for the reduction of carboxylic acids to the corresponding alcohols via acyloxyborohydrides was explored. Acyloxyborohydrides, prepared from the reaction of various carboxylic acids and sodium borohydride, underwent reduction to the corresponding alcohols readily by the addition of dimethyl sulfate or Lewis acids, such as boron trifluoride etherate and triphenyl borate, presumably through acyloxyboranes. By utilizing this procedure, aliphatic and aromatic acids are rapidly and quantitatively reduced to the corresponding alcohols in terahydrofuran either at room temperature (or at $65^{\circ}$). This procedure provides selective reduction of carboxylic acids in the presence of halogen, nitro, and heterocyclic rings such as furan and thiophene.

The 20% Pt/C catalysts were synthesized using the chemical reduction method for polymer electrolyte fuel cell cathode and were heat-treated in the temperature range from 300 to $600^{\circ}C$. The oxygen reduction reaction of the catalysts was evaluated using the electrochemical measurement. The oxygen reduction reaction of the heat-treated Pt/C at $300^{\circ}C$ had high catalytic activity and the oxygen reduction reaction current of that was 2 times than that of non-heat treatment catalyst. It is considered that the change of the crystallinity and particle size by heat treatment could increase the catalytic activity.

Sn-Cu alloy powders were prepared via a simple chemical reduction method for the negative electrode materials in lithiumion batteries. The addition of Cu can suppress the growth of Sn particles during synthetic process. Furthermore, the Cu also acts as a matrix phase against the volume change during cycling. With increasing amount of the Cu, a stable $Cu_6Sn_5$ phase formed in the Sn-Cu alloy and its cycle performance greatly enhanced depending on the Cu content. To promote the generation of the $Cu_6Sn_5$ phase, the synthesis temperature is raised to $60-100^{\circ}C$ from the ambient temperature. The Sn-Cu alloy powders prepared at elevated temperatures showed remarkable cycle performances. The Sn-Cu alloy powder obtained at $60^{\circ}C$ exhibited a significantly high volumetric capacity of over 2,000 mAh/cc at the 50th cycle.
An electrochemical reduction of a mixture of NiO and rare earth oxides has been conducted to increase the reduction degree of rare earth oxides. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurement was carried out to determine the electrochemical reduction behavior of the mixed oxide in molten LiCl medium. Constant voltage electrolysis was performed with various supplied charges to understand the mechanism of electrochemical reduction of the mixed oxide as a working electrode. After completion of the electrochemical reduction, crystal structure of the reaction intermediates was characterized by using an X-ray diffraction method. The results clearly demonstrate that the rare earth oxide was converted to RE-Ni intermetallics via co-reduction with NiO.
Ruthenium catalysts modified by selenium have been introduced as alternative materials to Pt in Direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). RuSe nano-particles were synthesized on the Vulcan XC72R carbon supports via polyol method. The prepared catalysts were electrochemically and physically characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV,) linear sweep voltammetry, methanol tolerance test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energydispersive Spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Increasing the Se concentration up to 20 at % increased the electro-catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction. By increasing Se amount, Ru metallic form on the surface was increased. The $Ru_{80}Se_{20}$/C catalysts showed the highest oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and outstanding methanol tolerant property in half cell tests as well as single cell test.
Controlled reduction of silver alkylcarbamate complexes with hydrogen gas was investigated as a facile synthetic method for high concentrations of silver nanocolloids in organic solvent. Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used to stabilize the silver colloids obtained from the chemical reduction. To determine optimum conditions for preparation of the stable and controlled silver colloids with the narrowest particle size and distribution, a large number of experiments were carried out involving variations in the concentrations of the silver 2-ethylhexylcarbamate (Ag-EHCB) complex, PVP, and 2-propanol. The initial colloid had a mean particle diameter between 5$\sim$50 nm, as measured by transmission electron microscopy, and exhibited a sharp absorption band in the UV region with a maximum size near 420 nm. After treatment with a reducing agent, the colloids were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.
Ni(II) containing coenzyme F430 catalyzes the reduction of $CO_2$ in methanogen. Macrocyclic Ni(II) complexes with N,O shiff bases have been received a great attention since metal ions play an important role in the catalysis of reduction. The reducing power of metal complexes are supposed to be dependent on oxidoreduction state of metal ion and structural properties of macrocyclic ring moiety that can enhance electrochemical properties in catalytic process. Six different ${\alpha}$-oximinoketone compounds, precursor of macrocyclic ligands used in $CO_2$ reduction coenzyme F430 model complexes, were synthesized with yields over 90% and characterized by NMR. The molecular geometries of ${\alpha}$-oximinoketone analogues were fully optimized at Beck's-three-parameter hybrid (B3LYP) method in density functional theory (DFT) method with $6-31+G^*$ basis set using the ab initio program. In order to understand molecular planarity and substitutional effects that may enhance reducing power of metal ion are studied by computing the structure-dependent $^{13}C$-NMR chemical shift and comparing with experimental results.
Spherical nanosized cobalt powder with an average size of 150-400 nm was successfully prepared at room temperature from cobalt sulfate heptahydrate ($CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$). Wet chemical reduction method was adopted to synthesize nano cobalt powder and hypophosphorous acid ($H_3PO_2$) was used as reduction agent. Both the HCP and the FCC Co phase were developed while $CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ concentration ranged from 0.7 M to 1.1 M. Secondary phase such as $Co(OH)_2$ and $CO_3O_4$ were also observed. Peaks for the crystalline Co phase having HCP and FCC structure crystallized as increasing the concentration of $H_3PO_2$, indicating that the amount of reduction agent was enough to reduce $Co(OH)_2$. Consequently, a homogeneous Co phase could be developed without second phase when the $H_3PO_2/CoSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ ratio exceeded 7.

Geosynthetic Reinforcements - membrane drawn type, warp/knitted type, junction bonded type and composite type geogrids, strip type reinforcement - were used to compare the long-term perfor-mance by total factor of safety with reduction factors during service periods. To evaluate the reduction factors, wide-width tensile property, installation damage, creep deformation, chemical and biological degradation tests were performed. Long-term design strengths of geosynthetic reinforcements were calculated by using GRI standard Test Method GG4.
