This study was to evaluate the optimum conditions for chemical coagulation to remove color from the effluent of a piggery wastewater treatment process. The DOC concentration in the effluent was about 227.3 mg/L, color was 2,430 CU, turbidity was 22.1 NTU, and UV$_{254}$-absorbance was 3.7 cm$^{-1}$. The fractions of hydrophobic, transphilic, and hydrophilic substance of the effluent was about 55.3%, 17.4%, 27.3% respectively. Also, molecular weight cut-off(MWCO) of below 0.5 K, 0.5 K to 1 K, 1 K to 10 K, 10 K to 30 K, and over 30 K were 74.2%, 7.3%, 5.5%, 7.1%, and 5.9% respectively. SCD(streaming current Detector) was used to find out the optimum pH values and coagulant dosages. The optimum dosages and pH of Al$^{3+}$ were 5.84 mM and 5.3, while those of Fe$^{3+}$ were 9.25 mM and 5.0, respectively. At optimum conditions of coagulation, color removal efficiencies for aluminium sulfate and ferric chloride were as high as 91.9 and 98.7%, respectively. Chemical coagulation showed good performance to remove color from on biologically treated piggery wastewater.

The object of this study was to observe the effect of Banhasasim-tang (BHSST) on the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer in mice. Three different dosages of BHSST extract (400, 200 and 100 mg/kg) were once orally administered 1 hr before HCl/EtOH mixture treatment. One hour after HCl/EtOH mixture single oral treatment, the changes on the gross hemorrhagic lesion scores, fundic histopathology, gastric nitrate/nitrite contents, lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense system (catalase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities) were observed, and compared with that of ranitidine 100 mg/kg. As results of all three different dosages of BHSST extract treatment in the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer mice, significant and dose-dependent decreased gastric damages. BHSST extracts also increased gastric nitrate/nitrite contents and strengthened the antioxidant defense systems, and increased the activities of catalase and SOD, respectively. BHSST extracts 200 mg/kg showed similar anti-ulcerative effect as compared with ranitidine 100 mg/kg, in this experiment. BHSST has favorable protective effects against to the HCl/EtOH-induced gastric damages, through the strengthening of the body antioxidant defense systems. These gastroprotective effects of BHSST against HCl/EtOH-induced gastric ulcer considered as results of complicated synergic effects of their 8 kinds of herbal components, but exact synergic or individual herbal effects are difficult to discuss in this study. Therefore, more detail synergic effects between 8 kinds of individual herbal component of BHSST should be tested with screening of active anti-inflammatory chemical ingredients, in future.

DIP(deinked pulp) was bleached by FAS, $Na_2S_2O_4$ and $H_2O_2$, which are widely used in DIP bleaching process, in order to improve optical properties of DIP, and the bleaching efficiencies of DIP and environmental loads of waste water were compared, depending on bleaching chemical dosages. With the application of different bleaching chemicals, some positive improvements were shown in optical and physical properties of bleached pulp. However, the physical properties of bleached DIP and their characteristics of wastewater were remarkably different, depending on dosages and bleaching reagents. DIP chemicals with FAS and $Na_2S_2O_4$ have higher improvement in optical and physical properties than $H_2O_2$. Also, environmental loads such as pH, turbidity, SCODcr and cationic demand were decreased in reductive bleaching process. Despite of higher effectiveness of reductive bleaching process, there were some environmental problems caused by sulfur ions from FAS and $Na_2S_2O_4$. With the method of sulfur ion controls, it would be more effective than $H_2O_2$ bleaching process.
The effects of pH (5, 7 and 9) and ionic strength of different salts on the flocculation characteristics of humic acid by inorganic (alum, polyaluminum chloride (PAC) with degree of neutralization, r=(OH/Al) of 1.7) and organic (cationic polyelectrolyte) coagulants, have been examined using a simple continuous optical technique, coupled with measurements of zeta potential. The results are compared mainly by the mechanisms of its destabilization and subsequent removal. The destabilization and subsequent removal of humic acid by PAC and cationic polyelectrolyte occur by a simple charge neutralization, regardless of pH of the solution. However, the mechanism of those by alum is greatly dependent on pH and coagulant dosage, i.e., both mechanisms of charge neutralization at lower dosages and sweep flocculation at higher dosages at pH 5, by sweep flocculation mechanism at pH 7, and little flocculation because of electrostatic repulsion between negatively charged humic acid and aluminum species at pH 9. The ionic strength also affects those greatly, mainly based on the charge of salts, and so is more evident for the salts of highly charged cationic species, such as $CaCl_2$ and $MgCI_2.$ However, it is found that the salts have no effect on those at the optimum dosage for alum acting by the mechanism of sweep flocculation at pH 7, regardless of their charge.
The effective removal of turbid-inducing particulates and algae-inducing phosphorous was systematically investigated by the variation of physico-chemical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, and coagulant types. Al(III)-based and Fe(III)-based coagulants exhibited high removal efficiency of turbidity and phosphorous at optimal pH ranges of 7~9, in which zeta potential nearly approached to zero. The removal rate of turbidity rapidly increased with the increase of coagulant dosages, whereas the removal rate of phosphorous gradually increased due to an equivalent reaction of phosphorous with metallic ions. The generation of flocs during coagulation was visualized by high speed camera (Motion Scope 2000, Redlake Co.), and the images of singular flocs were captured by optical microscope. The flocs generated by Fe(III)-based coagulant was more compact than those induced by Al(III)-based coagulant, and the settlabiltiy of Fe(III)-induced flocs was superior to that of Al(III)-induced flocs.
In this study, we investigated the effects of electron beam irradiation on the rheological properties of PLA for enhancing processability. The electron beam was irradiated onto the pure PLA, chemically modified PLA by reactive extrusion, and PLA containing functional monomer. The complex viscosity and log G'vs. log G" plot among dynamic rheological properties were chosen for comparison. The complex viscosity of irradiated pure and chemically modified PLA decreased significantly due to de-gradation of PLA molecules with increasing the E-beam dosages. Complex viscosity of irradiated PLA with functional monomer showed maximum value at moderate dosage, while at high dosage the complex viscosity was decreased by a prolonged irradiation.

In the recent design of high ductile fiber-reinforced cementitious composite ECC, which exhibits tensile strain-hardening behavior in the hardened state, optimizing both processing mechanical properties for specific applications is critical. This study introduced a method to develop useful ECCs in field, which possess the different fluid properties to facilitate diverse types of processing (i.e., self-consolidating or spray processing). Control of rheological modulation was regarded as a key factor to allow the performance of the desired processing, while retaining the ductile material properties. To control the rheological properties of the composite, we first determined basic ECC compositon, which is based on micromechanics and steady-state cracking theory. The stability and consequent viscosity of suspensions were, then, mediated by optimizing dosages of chemical and mineral admixtures. The rheological properties altered by this approach were revealed to be effective in obtaining ECC hardened properties, allowing us to readily achieve the desired function of the fresh ECC.

Objectives: Chemical hazard evaluations are important for workers' health and working environments. Allyl chloride (CAS No. 107-05-1) is used in many industries, leading to concerns about the possibility of threats to the health of workers. Since only insufficient or controversial information is available about potential related hazards, an in vitro mammalian chromosomal aberration (CA) assay was conducted in order to gain additional information concerning any such hazards. Moreover, toxicological information from this study could be applied for workers' rights to know, and to prepare or update the Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for a number of industries. Methods and Results: The assay was performed using the Chinese hamster lung fibroblast cell (ATCC, CRL-1935), by the direct method (-S9) and by the metabolic activated method (+S9 mix). Using the direct method, the seven dosages in the 48-hour treatment group did not show that the frequency of CA is proportionate to the dosage. The frequency of CA is not proportionate to the dosage addition for a six-hour treatment using the metabolic activated method. Conclusions: From these findings, it was decided that this chemical does not induce chromosomal aberrations under the tested conditions.
To classify the chemical hazard according to globally harmonized system of classification and labeling of chemicals (GHS), we investigated the genotoxicity of three chemicals, methyl myristate, 2-ethylhexanoic acid zinc salt, N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-hydroxyethyl) ethylenediamine, using male ICR mice bone marrow cells for the screening of micronucleus induction. Although these three chemicals have already been tested numerous times, a micronucleus test has not been conducted. The seven week-old male ICR mice were tested at three dosages for the three chemicals, respectively. After 24 h of oral administration with the three chemicals, the mice were sacrificed and their bone marrow cells were prepared for smearing slides. As a result of counting the micronucleated polychromatic erythrocyte (MNPCE) of 2,000 polychromatic erythrocytes, all treated groups expressed no statistically significant increase of MNPCE compared to the negative control group. There were no clinical signs related with the oral exposure of these three chemicals. It was concluded that these three chemicals did not induce micronucleus in the bone marrow cells of ICR mice, and there was no direct proportion with dosage. These results indicate that the three chemicals have no mutagenic potential under each test condition, and it is not classified these chemicals as mutagens by GHS.

Objectives: In this study, the in vitro mammalian chromosomal aberration (CA) assay was conducted to gain additional information concerning the hazards associated with the use of cyclopentane and ammonium nitrate. While these two chemicals had already been tested by many methods, they had not been studied in the CA test. Methods: The assay was performed using the ovarian infantile cell (CHO-K1 cell), by the direct method (-S9) and by the metabolic activated method (+S9 mix). Results: Using the direct method, the 7 dosages in a 48 hour treatment group did not show that the frequency of CA is proportion to the dosage addition. The frequency of CA is not proportion to the dosage addition for a 6 hour treatment using the metabolic activated method. Conclusion: From these findings, it was decided that the 2 chemicals do not induce chromosomal aberrations under the tested conditions.
