  • A series of new 4-aryl-6,8-dimethylpyrimido[4,5-c]pyridazine-5,7(6H,8H)-diones have been synthesized via three component reaction of 1,3-dimethylbarbituric acid with arylglyoxals in the presence of hydrazinium dihydrochloride in ethanol. All of these derivatives may act as potential monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

Eu(Ⅲ) Luminescence Phase-Modulation Spectroscopy as a Site-Selective Probe of Y Zeolite

  • Phase shift spectroscopy is applied to Eu(Ⅲ) luminescence from $Eu^{3+}$-exchanged Y zeolite. The phase shift and intensity modulation of luminescence following intensity-modulated excitation are measured as a function of modulation frequency and they are fitted into a double exponential decay. The fast decay component, compared with the slow one, has narrower spectral bandwidth and is emitted from the $Eu^{3+}$ that has more polar and definite environment with higher symmetry and that interacts more easily with hydrated water molecules. The fast decay component is attributed to $Eu^{3+}$ at site Ⅱ' while the slow one to $Eu^{3+}$ at sites Ⅰ' and Ⅰ.

  • 소형의 이온선택성 전극을 흐름계 어레이로 구성하여 전자혀 시스템을 제작하였다. 제작된 전자혀 시스템에 음용수 및 알코올성 음료를 저 농도의 완충용액 (0.005 M Tris-$H_2SO_4$ pH 7.2)에 묽힌 후 9개의 전극이 장착된 흐름계에 흘려 보내어 전위차를 측정하였다. 얻어진 자료는 주성분 분석 (principal component analysis; PCA)을 통하여 식음료의 맛을 평가할 수 있도록 2차원 및 3차원 좌표계에 표시하였다. 본 연구에서 제작한 전자혀 시스템은 식품의 생산공정관리의 목적으로 또는 시중에서 구할 수 있는 식음료 맛의 변화 추이를 구분해 내는 목적으로 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.

Enhanced Production of Recombinant Protein in Escherichia coli Using Silkworm Hemolymph

  • The effect of silkworm hemolymph on the expression of recombinant protein in Escherichia coli was investigated. The addition of silkworm hemolymph to the culture medium in­creased the production of recombinant $\beta$-galactosidase in E. coli. The production was dependent on the concentration of the added silkworm hemolymph, which increased 2-, 5-, and 8-fold in media supplemented with 1, 3, and $5\%$ silkworm hemolymph, respectively. To identify the effective component, the silkworm hemolymph was fractionated by gel filtration column chromatography. A fraction, with a molecular weight of about 30 K was identified as the effective component.

THE USE OF MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS TO EVALUATE THE RESPONSE OF RICE STRAW VARIETIES TO CHEMICAL TREATMENT

  • Multivariate statistical procedures were used to analyse data on the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of four varienties of rice straw after treatment with 4% NaOH solution, 4% urea solution or distilled water (control) for 48 hours. For each treatment, stepwise discriminant analysis identified the variables which maximized differences between varieties and the eigenvectors from principal component analysis quantified the contribution of these criterion variables to varietal differences. The overall response of varieties to chemical treatment was demonstrated qualitatively, by cluster analysis, and quantitatively, from the magnitude of the principal component scores. The analysis revealed that the urea and control treatments elicited the same response whereas NaOH had the greatest effect on the poorest straw variety. Similar analyses conducted on the botanical fractions of the varieties showed that the relative response of the inflorescence, stem, leaf blade and leaf sheath fractions was not altered by chemical treatment.
