  • An efficient performance model for scramjet engines has been proposed for scramjet performance design. In supersonic air intake design, the compression angles of the wedge were determined to maximize the total pressure recovery of the intake based on Oswatisch criterion. Both combustion models of chemical equilibrium and finite-rate chemistry model are implemented, and compared each model with the results by Starkey for Waverider engine configuration. Finally, the performance model of concern has been confirmed by conducting performance analysis with hypothetical mission profile and design conditions.

  • During natural ageing of HTPB propellant undergoes a series of slow physico-chemical degradation reactions. By using accelerated ageing conditions it is possible to simulate the material behaviour at different time-temperature conditions especially focused on the in-service conditions. Ageing behaviour of HTPB propellant were investigated using HFC(Micro-Heat Flow Calorimeter) is universal technique for measuring the rate of slow chemical and physical processes in long-term storage.

  • The ignition characteristics of a reactive solid with rough surface by constant heat flux were studied. The geometry of surface was represented by a set of identical protrusions having a shape of wedge based on the block of reactive solid. Several regimes of ignition were found, depending on the ratio of the protrusion length and the depth of the heated layer, formed in course of ignition process: 1) when the substance is ignited as the massive block, and the effect of roughness is not pronounced; 2) when ignited are the individual protrusions; and 3) in the intermediate region between the first two. Critical ignition conditions: ignition time and ignition criterion, are determined for the three regimes. The results are compared with the results for the one-dimensional ignition of the semi-infinite body. It is shown, that the effect of geometry on ignition results in the considerable reduction of ignition delay, and the amount of energy required for the successful ignition is less compared to the one- dimensional case.

  • It is observed that chemical characteristics of HTPB(Hydroxyl Terminated Polybutadiene) binder such as OH index, molecular weight and functionality and so on, can be different with synthetic batch, which can affect curing reaction of binder in itself or propellant. Finally this reaction can also affect mechanical properties of propellant. And the results suggest that proper degree of curing reaction is necessary to obtain better mechanical properties of propellant.

  • We present a microscopic understanding of the chemical erosion due to combustion product on the nozzle throat using molecular dynamics simulations. The present erosion process consists of molecule-addition step and equilibrium step. First, either $CO_2$ or $H_2O$ are introduced into the system with high velocity to provoke the collision with graphite surface. Then, the equilibrium simulation is followed. The collision-included dissociation and its influence on the erosion is emphasized and the present molecular observations are compared with the macroscopic chemical reaction model.

  • The characterization of aging of the pyrotechnic device is conducted thermally, chemically, and spectroscopically. The device is comprised of two parts: (i) igniter composed of Zr and (ii) pyrotechnic delay composed of ZrNi alloy. The thermally induced chemical reaction is identified through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA). The peak deconvolution of the themo-chemical data is used to estimate the enthalpy change of each metallic fuel component. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) are used for chemical species analysis. The decomposition of oxidants by moisture significantly affected the fuel aging, and the formation of oxide film and metal oxide on the fuel surface gave rise to the thermal energy decrease.

  • In this study, an extinguishment model of a three-dimensional solid propellant rocket was developed by combustion and fast depressurization to control the thrust of a solid rocket. Computational fluid dynamics simulation was carried out to ascertain the change in flow patterns in the combustion chamber and the extinguishment process by using a pintle. An ammonium perchloride was used as the target propellant and the dynamic behavior of its major parameters such as temperature, pressure, and burning rate was predicted using the combustion model. The dynamic behavior of the combustion chamber was confirmed by fast depressurization from an initial pressure of 7 MPa to a final pressure of 2.5 MPa at a depressurization rate of approximately -912 MPa/s.

  • By extending one-dimensional ZND detonation structure analysis model, a simple model for two-dimensional oblique detonation wave structure analysis is presented by coupling Rankine-Hugoniot relation and chemical kinetics for oblique shock wave and oblique detonation wave. Base on this study, two-dimensional fluid dynamics analysis is carried out to investigate the detailed unsteady structure of oblique detonation waves involving triple point, transverse waves and cellular structures. CFD results provide a deeper insight into the detailed structure of oblique detonation waves, and the simple model could be used as a unified design tool for hypersonic propulsion systems employing oblique detonation wave as combustion mechanism.

  • Endothermic fuels are known as a probable fuel for hypersonic atmospheric flight vehicles and advanced propulsion systems, as well as cryogenic fuels. Especially, from the standpoint of the advanced regenerative cooling use, they are quite useful as a coolant fuel because of their large heat sink due to their chemical decompositions; so-called endothermic cooling effect. However, no heat transfer equations have been proposed taking into account such endothermic reactive behaviors concretely. This paper describes an analytical method for evaluation of the heat transfer rates between endothermic reacting coolant fuel and coolant-side wall in the regenerative cooling passages. Heat transfer mechanism is indicated based on a classical transport-phenomenological approach. A new relational expression of Nusselt number ratio for forcedconvective heat transfer with such endothermic reactions is also proposed by theoretical approaches using some classical hypotheses. Its applicability is assessed provisionally by comparison with confirmed results of heated tube tests for supercritical JP-7 fuel carried out at NASA Lewis Research Center, using its heat sink characteristics evaluated by United Technologies Research Center(UTRC). As a result, it has been suggested that the proposed relational equation is applicable to the evaluation of enhancement of Nusselt numbers due to such reactions in developed turbulent flows such as in the regenerative cooling passages.
