  • In this paper, the present condition for localization of process pumps and the enhancement method of the localization ratio of process pumps for refinery and chemical plant market were studied. The market of plant industry in the world has grown rapidly since 2000. However, the profit of domestic plant EPC compaies cound not have been increased as much as the market scale because they procured most of equipment from overseas. To make remarkable profit of plant EPC companies in the petrochemical industry, localization of equipments is required. Suitable equipment for localization is process pump applied API 610 standard. An purchased amount of pumps from overseas by domestic plant EPC companies in the last two years were 230 billion won. If process pumps are localized then an profit of plant EPC project will increase.

  • The ball valve is an important device in the pipeline transportation system of nuclear power plants. Its operational stability and safety directly affect the normal working of nuclear power plants. In this study, the transient numerical simulation of the opening and closing process of a ball valve was conducted on the basis of the flow interruption capability experiment of the ball valve by using the moving mesh method and inlet and outlet variable boundary conditions. The flow rate and pressure difference with time of the opening and closing process of the ball valve were studied. The internal flow characteristics of the ball valve under different relative openings were analyzed in conjunction with the typical back-step flow structure. Results show that the transient numerical results agree well with the experimental results. The internal flow characteristics of the ball valve are similar at the same opening during opening and closing process. At small opening, the spool and outlet channels easily form a back-step flow structure. The disappearance and generation of backflow vortices during opening and closing occur at 85% opening and 75% opening, respectively. With the decrease in opening degree, the difference in vortex core area in the flow channel of the ball valve spool in the opening and closing process gradually appears. The research results provide some reference value for the design and optimization of ball valves.

  • For development of an on-line monitoring unit of fermentation process, an auto dilution unit based on traditional chemical and biological analytical method was developed and the performance was evaluated. The dilution unit was constructed with two syringe pumps and flow direction change valves and fully automated. Total delivery volume of two pumps using distilled water was measured to confirm the operating stability And diluted concentrations of three substrate solutions (glucose, lactic acid, ethanol) were compared with a standard method with a high performance liquid chromatograph (glucose, lactic acid) and gas chromatograph (ethanol). Relative error values of total delivery volume of the pumps were below 3% and standard deviation values were 0.003 (n=5). Relative error values of diluted concentration of the dilution unit measurements were below 2% with 1/10 of dilution ratio and 70, $80{\mu}{\ell}$ of sample volume conditions for glucose and lactic acid, 1/30 of dilution ratio and $70{\mu}{\ell}$ of sample volume conditions for ethanol, respectively. In case of the ethanol, cause of the evaporative characteristics, the relative error values showed over 5% whole experimental conditions.

  • Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) has emerged as an enabling technology for the manufacturing of multi-level metal interconnects used in high-density Integrated Circuits (IC). Recently, multi-level structures have been also widely used m the MEMS device such as micro engines, pressure sensors, micromechanical fluid pumps, micro mirrors and micro lenses. Especially, among the thin films available in IC technologies, polysilicon has probably found the widest range of uses in silicon technology based MEMS. This paper presents the characteristic of polysilicon CMP for multi-level MEMS structures. Two-step CMP process verifies that is possible to decrease dishing amount with two type of slurries characteristics. This approach is attractive because two-step CMP process can be decreased dishing amount considerably more then just one CMP process.

  • This article presented two-staged chemical precipitation for radioactive wastewater decontamination by using chemical agents. The total amount of radioactive wastewater was $35m^3$, and main radionuclides were Cs-137, Cs-134, and Co-60. Initial radioactivity concentration of the liquid waste was 2264, 17, and 9 Bq/L for Cs-137, Cs-134 and Co-60, respectively. Potassium ferrocyanide, nickel nitrate, and ferrum nitrate were selected as chemical agents at high pH levels 8-10 according to the laboratory jar tests. After the process, radioactivity was precipitated as sludge at the bottom of the tank and decontaminated clean liquid was evaluated depending on discharge limits. By this precipitation method decontamination factors were determined as 66.5, 8.6, and 9 for Cs-137, Cs-134, and Co-60, respectively. By using the potassium ferrocyanide, about 98% of the Cs-137 was removed at pH 9. At the bottom of the tank, radioactive sludge amount from both stages was totally $0.98m^3$. It was transferred by sludge pumps to cementation unit for solidification. By chemical processing, 97.2% of volume reduction was achieved. The potassium ferrocyanide in two-staged precipitation method could be used successfully in large-scale applications for removal of Cs-137, Cs-134, and Co-60.

  • Fluid pumps in chemical processes are typically driven by electric motors. Even if the motor is separated from the pump with seals, wear resulting from friction and misalignment can lead to leakage of chemical fluid, causing corrosion in the bearing supporting the motor, and, eventually, failure of the motor. It is thus a standard procedure to replace bearings at regular intervals. In this article, we propose 3D-printed plastic ball bearings for use as an alternative to commercial stainless-steel ball bearings. The plastic bearings are easy to manufacture, require less time to replace, and are chemically resistant. To validate the applicability of the plastic bearings, we first conducted chemical resistance tests. Bearings were immersed in 30 caustic acid and 30 nitric acid for 30 min and 24 h, respectively. The test results showed no corrosive damage to the bearings. A test rig was set up to compare the performance of the plastic bearings with that of the commercially equivalent deep-groove ball bearings. Loading test results showed that the plastic bearings performed as well as the commercial bearing in terms of vibration level and load-handling capability. Finally, a plastic bearing was subjected to a clean-in-place process for three months. It actually outperformed the commercial bearing in terms of chemical resistance. Thus, 3D-printed plastic bearings are a viable alternative to stainless-steel ball bearings.

  • In this study, a mathematical model for optimal operation of the fusion fuel cycle is developed based on scheduling approach. The fusion fuel cycle consists of a system for storing and supplying deuterium and tritium, and receiving and separating process after the fusion reaction. Except that tritium is a radioactive material, most of these processes consist of catalytic reactions and separation process. For these reasons, it is possible to apply scheduling approach which is also widely utilized to chemical plants to derive the optimal operating scenarios. The developed model determined the optimal regeneration cycle to minimize the amount of tritium inside the vacuum pumps. Based on the characteristics of various device in the fusion reactor, the optimal tritium plant operation scenario is evaluated. The formulated model was applied to the actual tokamak scenario and utilized to analyze the fuel flow and balance of ITER fuel cycle.

  • The chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) process combines the chemical effect of slurry with the mechanical effect of abrasive (slurry)-wafer-pads The slurry delivery system has a notable effect on polishing results, because the slurry distribution is changed by the supply method. Thus, the investigation of slurry pumps and nozzles with regard to the slurry delivery system becomes important. This paper investigated the effect of a centrifugal slurry pump on a spray nozzle system in terms of uniform slurry supply under a rotating copper (Cu) wafer, based on experimental results and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In conventional tools, the slurry is unevenly and discontinuously supplied to the pad, due to a pulsed flow caused by the peristaltic pump and distributed in a narrow area by the tube nozzle. Adopting the proposed slurry delivery system provides a higher uniformity and lowered shear stress than usual methods. Therefore, the newly developed slurry delivery system can improve the CMP performance.

  • Some pretreatment methods have been proposed to enhance the biodegradability and to shorten the hydrolysis reaction time. By means of efficient pretreatment the suspended solids (SS) can be made of better accessible for the anaerobic bacteria. There are several ways how this can be accomplished, which include biological, mechanical, thermal, and chemical methods. For the sludge solubilization using the cavitation phenomenon, we have tried to develop a pretreatment process consisted of a reactor and pumps. The objectives of this study were to develop a advanced wastewater treatment consisted of IABR and the cavitation with PGA. The most effective removal for organic matter and nutrients were occured when both cavitation pretreatment and ${\gamma}$-PGA were applied at the IABR process. Only small portion of ${\gamma}$-PGA at a rate of 1.38mg/L, was enough to improve sedimentation ability, SS removal efficiencies, and sludge volume reduction. After the sludge solubilization by the cavitation, SCOD increased to 193% and SS decreased to 36%. The removal ratio of BOD was 94.5%, T-N removal ratio was 85.5% and T-P removal ratio was 84.9%. The combination process of the IABR with the cavitation and PGA addition seems to be very effective alternative wastewater treatment process.
